Page 2 From the Desk of Father Raaser Welcome back to all our families from their summer vacation. There is something special about Opening Day, be it the Yankees or Giants or Notre Dame. There is a sense of hope and a new beginning, a season of unknown potential. Well, we had another opening day, this past Wednesday. It was the 65th opening day of our elementary school. What was started in 1953 when Sr. Marie Gabriel, O.P., Principal, and the other seven Sisters from Blauvelt, has grown into the wonderful school it still is today. The first graduating class was in 1957. This year our enrollment is approximately 250 students (too early for final numbers; transfers are still accepted)! There is always a newness in opening day, the fresh smell of paint and floor wax, the teachers fixing up their classrooms, with new and inviting artwork, the students with new and clean uniforms and shoes-all ready to take on the work of a new grade. I remember my seventh grade teacher telling us on the first day of class, as of today you all have 100% in every class. I don t think anyone of us ended up the year that way, (perhaps that one girl, the smartest in the class, the one all the teachers love)! Catholic education is vital not only to our Church, but to the world. In Catholic school we teach to the whole child-body, mind, and soul. We all need to support our Catholic schools. At one time, every parish had their own school, now we have only 5 Catholic schools in Rockland County. We are blessed here in St. Margaret s to still host a Catholic school. It is a blessing to our parish to have the school. Education has always been one of the great missions of the Church. All of the great universities of Europe were once Catholic institution, many scientists were priests, the wealth of Western thought was influenced by Catholic philosophers and theologians, unlocking the mysteries of the universe and humanity. It was the Irish Catholic monks, hiding in the beehive huts that saved civilization during the Dark Ages. As St. Anselm noted Faith seeks understanding. Blind faith is deadly; our Catholic Faith must be understood. None of us are too old to learn something about our Faith. This year, I would like to emphasize the understanding of our faith. I would like to announce an Adult Religious Education Program for our parish. It s time for all of us to go back to school! Bible studies, talks and discussions on topics on the Bible, marriage, annulments, death, the Church, the sacraments, how to pray etc. are some of the topics. In a few weeks, in the bulletin there will be a survey on which topics you would be interested in attending, what time and day of the week that works best for you. The great commandment to Love the Lord with all your mind. We are called to grow in our faith; grow in the knowledge of our faith and grow in the way we live our faith. For that is the treasure of our Catholic belief and practice. Stay tuned.

Augustine Institute Kiosk and FORMED In the vestibule by the elevator you will notice a kiosk filled with books and CD s regarding our Faith. They are very interesting and timely. It is important to further your faith. Just take one, place the suggested donation in the money receptacle, and instead of returning the CD or book, and pass it on to other family members or friends. Another great resource is FORMED, an online program for the entire family. The videos are well done and very informative regarding family life, the Scriptures, the sacraments, youth, and knowledge of our Faith. Our parish has account set up with FORMED.
