REV. JOSEPH UECKER, C.PP.S. Speaks: English/Spanish Father Joseph Uecker, a priest of the Kansas City Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, served in parish ministry and taught business and Spanish in a high school seminary. He studied Spanish and business at La Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City which introduced him to Hispanic ministry. Moreover, he traveled to his community s missions in Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina learning about other cultures and communities. He has spent most of his priesthood in the Diocese of San Angelo, Texas serving as pastor to a Mexican-American community. He enjoys reading, cooking, and tracking current events. Second Collection to benefit the programs and services Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe Archbishop John C. Wester has approved an annual Second Collection to benefit the programs and services of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe on the weekend of August 18 and 19. Funding from this important second collection will support vital, ongoing programs serving our community through a wide spectrum of services including bilingual early childhood education, adult basic education classes, refugee support, low-cost immigration and citizenship legal services, self-sufficiency and housing assistance, free senior transportation, and a food pantry. Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe has served the community for more than 70 years and remains dedicated to finding solutions to some of the most pressing social challenges individuals, children and families face regardless of race, religion, country of origin, disabilities, age or sexual orientation. 7.29.18 Religious Education Bulletin Announcements We welcome Father Joseph Uecker to San Felipe de Neri Church on July 28 and 29, 2018 Welcome to San Felipe those who have recently registered: Elden and Lisa Severin Benny and Rhonda Roybal Registration For Next School Year We re continuing the registration for Religious Education students for the next school year for children in the First Grade thru Youth Group. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Prophet's Profit If you want to compare miracles in the first reading and the gospel, Elisha did his first, but Jesus did it better. Elisha had a hundred people to feed with twenty barley loaves and a handful of fresh grain. Jesus had five thousand people and only five loaves and a couple fish. So was Jesus trying to show up Elisha? Neither Jesus nor Elisha ever did a miracle for their own benefit. When Elisha cured the kings servant, he refused to accept a gift, because it would imply that Elisha did the miracle, while the prophet knew that God had cured him. Jesus refused to let the crowds make him a king. The miracle of feeding the five thousand was not done just for the crowd. He was using it to teach the disciples something important. He knew there would be times when they felt overwhelmed, so he showed them what God can do with our meager abilities. There are millions of people hungry for the good news that Jesus brings to the world. Remember the miracle of the loaves when you only have a few dollars to give to the missions, or when you're not sure you know enough to teach someone about Jesus. And remember that you do those things, not to make you look holy, but to let God show his loving power. The Buildings of San Felipe Neri Richard Ruddy Using the evolution of the buildings of San Felipe in Albuquerque s Old Town beginning in 1706, this two-part presentation traces cultural history from the extreme isolation of New Mexico in the 18th century. Sometimes clashing; sometimes blending, cultures changed with the arrival of Americans in the half of the 19th century. Extensive visuals, including rarely seen photographs, are used to tell this fascinating story. Richard Ruddy came to Albuquerque in 1949 and graduated from UNM in 1962. He is a Vietnam veteran and was a self-employed commercial photographer from 1972 to 2002. Ruddy wrote the award winning biography of Edmund G. Ross (2013), winner of the Gaspar Perez de Villagra award of the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Kansas Notable Book award. Ruddy is active in several history groups and lectures extensively about Albuquerque history.
