FROM OUR MINISTRY TEAM Receive the Power "I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days." Joel 2:28-29 On Sunday, May 20th the church will be celebrating its birthday. Pentecost was a Jewish festival when people came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Weeks. It was 50 days after the Passover festival. The disciples had gathered, still behind locked doors in fear. Staying in Jerusalem as Jesus had told them. Something about receiving power. For the disciples it must have been a strange time - the risen Jesus was no longer with them. They were apparently on their own, even though Jesus had assured them that he would be with them until the end of the age (Matt 28:20). For many of us, the feeling is the same. We might live in families, where there are people around all the time but that does not mean that we are not alone. Sometimes being amongst busy people can be very lonely and daunting. But Jesus had promised the disciples something that would change them. Was seeing the Risen Christ enough to transform the disciples into the dynamic group that is described in the Acts of the Apostles, leading large groups of people, teaching, sharing stories, facing authorities, healing people, speaking to strangers? The answer is no, seeing Jesus in the flesh after his resurrection was not enough, they needed more. The Jewish 2
prophet Joel, had foretold (Joel 2:28-29) that God would pour out His Spirit on all people. Pentecost for Christians is a time to remember what happened the first Pentecost after Christ ascended to heaven. We celebrate that the disciples were able to talk in languages not their own and to stand up and be bold in their preaching of the Good News about the Jesus they had lived with, seen die and also seen alive again. The impact was not to allow these disciples, men and women to hide in the locked rooms anymore. So many people responded to Peter's call to be baptised that they could not fit in a single place anymore! So where does this leave you and me? God is still pouring his Spirit on all people today. It was not just a one-off event. Throughout history, men and women have received supernatural gifts that allowed them the courage to stand-up and speak of Jesus, their saviour. God's Spirit is available to you all today. You do not have to continue wondering if Jesus was real, whether he died for your sins, and whether he rose from the dead. You can know that these things happened and that no longer do you need to live in that lonely place, behind locked doors, but God loves you, and that He has a specific purpose for your life. You are not living where you are, or in that family of yours, or doing that job, or working out retirement by accident. God knows you intimately and wants you to receive the power He has for you. Will you ask Him for that power? Jesus said "If you, though you are evil, know how to give your children good things - how much more will the Heavenly Father give His Spirit to those that ask. DIARY DATES St. Andrew s Amblers (stroll and chat group) Do join us on the day for a leisurely walk of about 1 hour. Start and finish at St Andrew s Church Room. Optional hot/cold drink/ biscuits afterwards (voluntary donation 1). Bring suitable footwear/clothing, inhalers, walking sticks etc. as necessary. We will be walking on local footpaths and roads. An informal friendly group, not covered by insurance. Well behaved dogs on a lead welcome. If it rains we will provide drinks in the Church Room instead. PENTECOST 20 TH MAY Following the success of our special Palm Sunday service (see report and photos on pages 9 and 10), we are holding another service with a difference on 20 th May, this time to celebrate Pentecost. Inspired by Messy Church, there will be a variety of activities (some messy, some lively, some quiet), based around the central theme of Pentecost. Don t be put off if the weather is wet a marquee will be set up in the churchyard, and the Church room will be open. If Palm Sunday is anything to go by, this will be a great afternoon, so do come along. EVERYBODY WELCOME! 5

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING You are all invited to a Parish Meeting, on Thursday May 24th at 7.00pm in Bredfield Village Hall. There will actually be two meetings the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council, when the members of the Council elect the chairman for the next twelve months, and make other appointments. This will be followed by the Annual Parish Meeting, when the Parish Council, and other associated organisations can report on their activities during the past year. It also gives the opportunity for you, the electors, to have a say on anything they consider important and to ask questions. *SAVE THE DATES* Bredfield Church Fete Saturday 2 nd June, 2.15pm, at the Old Rectory Brass on the Grass Saturday 14 th July, gates open 6.30pm, also at the Old Rectory 7
BREDFIELD CHURCH FETE Sat 2nd June 2018 Snow and ice are behind us! Forget Brexit, Potholes and the depressing daily headlines. Look forward to the one thing politicians can't interfere with! The envy of communities far and wide, BREDFIELD CHURCH FETE! By kind permission of Mr & Mrs D Arcy, the wonderful grounds of The Old Rectory will be open to welcome people from far and wide to this unique occasion. The usual huge range of attractions will be available, but you will have to come along to see what will be NEW! As always, the success of the fete depends on the support and generosity of the whole community. We need your help on the day and also any contribution of goods which you feel able to make: BOTTLES, TINS, PACKETS, JUMBLE, TOYS, HATS, BRIC-A-BRAC, PLANTS, PRODUCE and any ANTIQUE (or even just old!) items which we might auction. Anything is gratefully received or collected! The cake stall is always a major attraction and sells out quickly, so CAKES, BUNS, PIES and TARTS would be particularly welcome. DESIGNER CLOTHES and fashion items are needed for the Bredfield Boutique which is not to be missed by the style-following customers. Please ask all your family and friends, workmates and therapists to pass on their contributions too, and then bring them along on the day to share the wonderful atmosphere of your Church fete. NEWS FROM BREDFIELD MESSY DONKEY PALM SUNDAY SERVICE Bredfield has never seen a Palm Sunday quite like 2018 s! Beginning in the Church with the Baptism of Amber Coad (the undisputed star of the show), followed by an introduction to Palm Sunday by Clare Johnston, the Children s and Families Worker at St John s, we then processed from the Church to the Village Hall behind Magic, Bredfield s very own (Shetland) donkey. At the hall, people were able to take part in a variety of Palm Sunday-themed activities the most popular of which was hand-printing palm fronds onto a large Palm Sunday banner, which has since been used to great effect as an altar cloth in the Church. A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. It was wonderful to see so many people in the Church and in the hall afterwards from regular to occasional Church-goers, to visitors and people who normally worship elsewhere, who all came together to celebrate Palm Sunday. A big thank you to everyone from the village who helped make the afternoon such a success, and to the team from St John s who made it all happen and who helped and supported us throughout. I ll hold that for you! 9

The Children's Society Box Donation for 2018. 556.38, yes that's how much was collected in donations this year from all the boxes. Well done and a great big thank you to each and every box holder, this was a fantastic amount, a superb effort, far exceeding the 514.60 sent last year. By now all boxes should be back with you, ready for that loose change! If anyone is interested in becoming a box holder, I will happily answer any questions and give you more information regarding the Children's Society. I look forward to hearing from you. Car Boot & Table Top Sale Thank you to everyone who had a table in the hall, on the playing fields, helped cook and serve endless bacon butties, cakes & tea, made sure everyone parked in the right place and to everyone who came and spent their hard earned money. We raised 337 towards the new extension of the Village Hall - many thanks!! St Andrew s Amblers What a contrast between our March and April walks! March 7 th was a wintery day, just as the deep snow was starting to melt. A small, hardy and brave group set forth in warm clothes, boots etc. for a short walk, keeping to the roads which were starting to re-emerge. It was cold, it was wet, but we had a great time listening to stories and catching up after the severe weather. The snow drift across Caters Road was still too deep to negotiate, but watching the sheep in the meadow was a welcome sight. Hot drinks and biscuits back at the Church Room were enjoyed by all. In great contrast, our April 18 th walk saw the beginning of Summer. Coats and jumpers came off as we walked across a path over an oil seed rape field which was just starting to show colour, walked along lanes between the early Spring blossom of Sloe and Damson, passed banks of Primroses and Wild Strawberries, Woodland plants such as Dogs Mercury, Oxlip (Five Fingers) and Wood Anemones. We even saw a very unusual periwinkle flower showing beautiful markings caused by the frost, plus 13 roe deer in a field. It was especially good to be joined by 3 walkers from our sister church, St John s. So much to see, so much to chat about, the walk lasted longer than anticipated at 1 hr 45 but we did manage to fit in a chat with someone too poorly to join us. March April For both walks Alison Cannard and Ann Stammers did a recce the day before and for the second walk had gloves and a bag for a rubbish pick. 12
Even though we were only partly on the roads, 51 items of litter were picked up on the recce. On the same walk next day about half as many were picked up. What are we doing to our planet? Oceans, countryside, wildlife, are continually mistreated and undervalued. My thought to you: what comes first - humans or the world that we depend on? Quotation for May PENTECOST What is Pentecost? Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church's mission to the world. Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after Easter (the name comes from the Greek pentekoste, "fiftieth"). It is also called Whitsun, but does not necessarily coincide with the Whitsun Bank Holiday in the UK. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that is the way Christians understand God. Celebrating Pentecost Pentecost is a happy festival. Ministers in church often wear robes with red in the design as a symbol of the flames in which the Holy Spirit came to earth. Hymns sung at Pentecost take the Holy Spirit as their theme, and include Come down O Love Divine and Breathe on me breath of God Pentecost Symbols The symbols of Pentecost are those of the Holy Spirit and include flames, wind, the breath of God and a dove. The first Pentecost Pentecost comes from a Jewish harvest festival called Shavuot. The apostles were celebrating this festival when the Holy Spirit descended on them. It sounded like a very strong wind, and it looked like tongues of fire. The apostles then found themselves speaking in foreign languages, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
