Study Guide for Spirituality of the Gospels By Clifford M. Yeary September 2017 Lesson 4 Days 1& 2 Questions 1 through 6 begins page 26 9/20/17 Quest 1 Mark 8: 35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. Quest 2 See the Commentary notes for Luke 1:1-3 & Acts 1:1-2. Quest 3 Quest 4 Quest 5 Quest 6 Luke 2: 29 Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. Luke 7: 28 All the people who listened, including the tax collectors, and who were baptized with the baptism of John, acknowledged the righteousness of God; Luke 16: 16 The law and the prophets lasted until John; but from then on the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone who enters does so with violence. Go to your bible and read Luke 1:46-55, the Magnificat. Go to your bible and read Luke 2:29-32, the Nunc Dimittis. Go to your bible and reread Mark 8:22-10:52; then go to your bible and read Luke 9:51-19:7. Lesson 4 Days 3& 4 Questions 7 through 12 on pages 26 & 28 9/27/17 Quest 7 1 Cor 10: 1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2 and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 All ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ. 5 Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert. 6 These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. 7 And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel. 8 Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a single day. 9 Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered 1

death by serpents. 10 Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. 11 These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Go to your bible to read from Exodus 14:15-31, 16:1-15, & 17:1-7 as well as from Numbers 21:4-9. Quest 9 Go to the Commentary pages for Luke 9:57-62. Quest 10 Go to the Commentary pages for Luke 10:25-43. Quest 11a Luke9: 28 About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. 29While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. But he did not know what he was saying. 34 While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my chosen Son; listen to him. 36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen. Matt 17: 1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and do not be afraid. 8 And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. 2

Mark 9: 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. 4 Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 6 He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. 7T hen a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; * then from the cloud came a voice, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. 8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. Quest 11b Luke 5: 15 The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, 16 but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray. Luke 6: 12 In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. Luke 9: 18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am? Luke 11: 1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. Luke 18: 1 Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, Luke 19: 46 saying to them, It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves. Luke 21: 36 Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man. Luke 22: 32 but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers. Luke 22: 40 When he arrived at the place he said to them, Pray that you may not undergo the test. 41 After withdrawing about a stone s throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, Luke 22: 44 He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. 46 He said to them, Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test. 3

Luke 23: 34 Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. They divided his garments by casting lots. Quest 12 Luke 11: 1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. 2 He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread 4 and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test. Lesson 4 Days 5 & 6 Questions 13 through 18 see page 28 10/4/17 Quest 13 Luke 2: 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. 9 The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. 10 The angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 14 Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. Luke 6: 20 And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. 21 Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way. Luke 12: 15 Then he said to the crowd, Take care to guard against all 4

greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. This may be a misprint, but you are directed to read Luke, Chapters 16 through 21. Luke 16: 19 There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. 20 And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. 22 When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24And he cried out, Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames. 25 Abraham replied, My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours. 27 He said, Then I beg you, father, send him to my father s house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment. 29 But Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them. 30 He said, Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. 31 Then Abraham said, If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead. Quest 14a Go to Luke and [re]read The Lost Sheep (15:4-7), the Lost Coin (15:8-10) and the Prodigal Son (15:11-32). Quest 15 Mark 8: 34 He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Luke 9: 23 Then he said to all, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. End of Lesson 4 5

Lesson 5 Days 1& 2 Questions 1 through 6 begins page 30 10/11/17 Quest 2 John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1: 10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, but his own people * did not accept him. John 1: 14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father s only Son, full of grace and truth. John 6: 22 The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, Rabbi, when did you get here? 26 Jesus answered them and said, Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal. 28 So they said to him, What can we do to accomplish the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. 30 So they said to him, What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 So Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. 34 So they said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. 35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. 36 But I told you that although you have seen [me], you do not believe. 37 Everything that the Father gives me will 6

come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. 39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day. John 20: 31 But these are written that you may [come to] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. Quest 3 Quest 4 John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. John 1: 14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father s only Son, full of grace and truth. Exod 3: 14 God replied to Moses: I am who I am. Then he added: This is what you will tell the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you. John 6: 35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 8: 24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins. John 8: 28 So Jesus said (to them), When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. John 8: 58 Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM. John 18: 4 Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them, Whom are you looking for? 5 They answered him, Jesus the Nazorean. He said to them, I AM. Judas his betrayer was also with them. 6 When he said to them, I AM, they turned away and fell to the ground. 7 So he again asked them, Whom are you looking for? They said, Jesus the Nazorean. 8 Jesus answered, I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go. 7

Quest 5 Quest 6 John 15: 26 When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. John 16: 13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. John 20: 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit. John 13: 1 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper, 3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, 4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Master, are you going to wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later. Luke 22: 27 For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. 1 Pet 4: 11 Whoever preaches, let it be with the words of God; whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Lesson 5 Days 3 & 4 Questions 7 through 12 see page 32 10/18/17 Quest 7 Lev 19: 18 Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your own people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. John 13: 34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. John 15: 12 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 8

Luke 10: 25 There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 26 Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? How do you read it? 27 He said in reply, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. 28 He replied to him, You have answered correctly; do this and you will live. 29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 Jesus replied, A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him halfdead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back. 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers victim? 37 He answered, The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. Quest 8 Quest 9 John 10: 10 A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. John 17: 1 When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, 2 just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him. 3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. 4 I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began. 6 I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, 8 because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I 9

came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, 10 and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. 12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. 14 I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. 20 I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. 22 And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. 26 I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them. John 15: 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. 3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. 4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in 10

him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9 As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and remain in his love. Quest 10 John 3: 1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him. 3 Jesus answered and said to him, Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. 4 Nicodemus said to him, How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother s womb and be born again, can he? 5 Jesus answered, Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you, You must be born from above. 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can this happen? 10 Jesus answered and said to him, You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? 11 Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. John 7: 50 Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, 51 Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing? 52 They answered and said 11

to him, You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee. John 19: 39 Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds. 40 They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. 41 Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. 42 So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by. Quest 11 Quest 12a John 4: 13 Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; 14but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 7: 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: Rivers of living water will flow from within him. John 4: 4 He had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. 8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink? (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. 11 [The woman] said to him, Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the well is deep; where then can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks? 13 Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. 15 The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. 16 Jesus said to her, Go call your husband and come 12

back. 17 The woman answered and said to him, I do not have a husband. Jesus answered her, You are right in saying, I do not have a husband. 18 For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true. 19 The woman said to him, Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem. 21 Jesus said to her, Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. 25 The woman said to him, I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything. 26 Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who is speaking with you. 27 At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, What are you looking for? or Why are you talking with her? 28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, 29 Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah? 30 They went out of the town and came to him. 31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, Rabbi, eat. 32 But he said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know. 33 So the disciples said to one another, Could someone have brought him something to eat? 34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Do you not say, In four months the harvest will be here? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. 36 The reaper is already * receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37 For here the saying is verified that One sows and another reaps. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work. 39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, He told me everything I have done. 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more began to believe in him because of his word, 42 and they said to the woman, We no longer believe because of your 13

word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world. Lesson 5 Days 5 & 6 Questions 13 through 18 begins page 34 10/25/17 Quest 13 The story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well appears in Question 9 above. Quest 14 John 20: 24 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 [Jesus] said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, Peace be with you. 27 Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe. 28 Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God! 29 Jesus said to him, Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of [his] disciples that are not written in this book. Quest 15 John 13: 23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus side. 24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant. 25 He leaned back against Jesus chest and said to him, Master, who is it? John 19: 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. 27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. 14

John 19: 35 An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may [come to] believe. John20: 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don t know where they put him. 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned home. John 21: 7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. John 21: 20 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, Master, who is the one who will betray you? 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about him? 22 Jesus said to him, What if I want him to remain until I come? * What concern is it of yours? You follow me. 23 So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just What if I want him to remain until I come? [What concern is it of yours?] 24 It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written. Quest 16 John 13: 23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus side. John 1: 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father s side, has revealed him. End of Lesson 5 15

Lesson 6 Days 1 & 2 Questions 1 through 4 begins page 36 11/15/17 Quest 2 John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 3: 1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Quest 3a John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through 16

him. 8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. 12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man s decision but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father s only Son, full of grace and truth. Lesson 6 Days 5 & 6 Questions 9 through 12 begins page 38 11/29/17 Quest 12 Matt 28: 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Mark 10: 42 Jesus summoned them and said to them, You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. 43 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; 44 whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Luke 24: 13 Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, 14 and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, 16j but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, What are you discussing as you walk along? They stopped, looking downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days? 19 And he replied to them, What sort of things? They said to him, The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. 21 But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. 22 Some women from our group, however, have 17

astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning 23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. 24 Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see. 25 And he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory? 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. 29 But they urged him, Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. 31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. 32 Then they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us? John 13: 34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. 35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Acts 4: 32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.
