Carmel on Sunday, February 23 at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. As part of the celebration we will list the names and years of the married couples in the bulletin that weekend. If you would like to have your name included please call the center at 508-791-6139 or email Joan at joan_dargenis@yahoo.com. Please include names, the anniversary date and number of years. We are looking for the couples who have been married fifty years or more to give them a special recognition at the Mass. We are having a contest and will be giving a gift certificate to three winning couples. We would like you to share your story or maybe your parents love story with us. Maybe you might share your unique marriage customs. Example I know of one couple, who was married in Italy and they explain how they walked from their house to the church, receiving gifts and blessings along the way. Another couple was very much in love, but could not get married until the older sister was married. They spent time fixing her up until the right one proposed and now sixty years later, they have a great story to tell. We are also going to having a Gallery of Love in the cultural center. We would like to display your marriage photo in our gallery. We will have a reception following the Mass and people will be invited to view the pictures. Please tape your name, wedding date and phone number on the back of the photo. We are also interested in pictures of the wedding party and reception; examples, the cutting of the cake or the throwing of the bouquet. Please help us make this a special occasion and also send a message to our children about the Sacrament of Marriage.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 9, 2014 TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2014 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; WORLD MARRIAGE DAY Learn by doing Twentieth-century writer Aldous Huxley said of love: There isn t any secret formula or method. You learn love by loving. At every crossroad, at every bump in the road in your relationships with others, this is a simple truth to put into practice: Learn to love by loving; learn to forgive by forgiving. It isn t any more complicated than that. The choice is yours. TODAY S READINGS: Isaiah 58:7-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16 (73) Your light must shine before others. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10 MEMORIAL OF SCHOLASTICA, VIRGIN, RELIGIOUS Make every visitation sacred Once a year Saint Scholastica and her equally busy brother, Saint Benedict, would pause to visit each other for a day. At one of these meetings Scholastica wanted Benedict to linger on but he insisted on going. Tradition has it that Scholastica prayed that God hear the request her brother was ignoring, and a furious storm came up, forcing him to stay longer. Back home three days later, Benedict saw his sister s soul leaving the earth and ascending to heaven in the form of a shining white dove. Cherish each visit with a loved one as if it were your last. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13; Mark 6:53-56 (329) They... began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 WORLD DAY OF THE SICK It s a matter of life and death All life, people of faith believe, comes from God and depends on God. Yet the beings on which God has bestowed all this wonderful life share the same end of their earthly stories: inescapable physical death. At some point disease and decline begin their work from within. Inside, though, is also the place of the soul where God plants the seed of eternal life. On this World Day of the Sick, remember to respect and care for both health and sickness in yourself and others, but don t forget to do the same for the human spirit as well. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30; Mark 7:1-13 (330) Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth? WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 Let wisdom be your guide King Solomon had the legendary reputation of being the wisest man who ever lived, yet some of the scripture stories about him suggest that the capacity for wisdom isn t the same as its exercise. How often in news cycles do you hear about really smart people making really dumb or even scandalous choices? Great talent often breeds great arrogance. Pride goes before disaster, and a haughty spirit before a fall, as Proverbs 16:18 warns. Solomon overburdened his citizens, over-married, and was overly tolerant of foreign gods. You must become like little children for wisdom to take you in hand. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 10:1-10; Mark 7:14-23 (331) Blessed be the Lord, your God, whom it has pleased to place you on the throne of Israel. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13 Learn from the master Just because Jesus was God doesn t mean he knew everything all at once! After all, he was human as well as divine. The gospels tell how Jesus grew in wisdom and stature certainly as a boy in the Temple but indeed throughout his whole life. Watching Jesus interact with people in his daily life, hearing him pray, listening as he wonders aloud about his Father these moments can be instructive as you make your way in wisdom and stature, too. Spend some time walking with Jesus this day and learn from his wisdom. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 11:4-13; Mark 7:24-30 (332) Jesus... entered a house and wanted no one to know about it, but he could not escape notice. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14 MEMORIAL OF CYRIL AND METHODIUS, BISHOPS Enjoy Mass appeal If you were born after 1960 you likely don t remember when Mass was celebrated exclusively in Latin. Only with the Second Vatican Council did the church adopt the general practice of translating most of the Mass into the vernacular, or everyday language, of the local people. This change was a long time coming Saints Cyril and Methodius lobbied for it back in the ninth century! Though their efforts were not successful at the time, the idea lived on. When you attend Mass, say a prayer of thanks for those who worked long and hard to make the power of the liturgy accessible to you in your native language. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19; Mark 7:31-37 (333). He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15 MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY There s more than one way to see Mary One wonders how much honor artists have given the mother of Jesus over the centuries by imagining her as impossibly idealized, the lovely lady dressed in blue of sentimental verse. Yet once in a while someone breaks through the pastel pallet. Sister Helena Steffensmeier, for example, a School Sister of St. Francis in Milwaukee, carved an image of Mary from a gnarled linden tree stump. The result: Mary not as child-bride or queen but an old woman, a grand mother who has seen both terror and glory, a face lined and wrinkled, a voice still singing: The Lord has done good things for me. Blessed be his name. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Kings 12:26-32; 13:33-34; Mark 8:1-10 (334) They ate and were satisfied.
