LESSON 1 September 7, 2014 SONS OF GOD Do you belong to the family of God? Does God know you as His son or daughter? Being a child of God is a special relationship. It makes you an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ. KNOW THESE WORDS HEIR JOINT HEIR One who inherits another s property. Sharing with someone else what belongs to another. DISCOVER YOUR TRUE IDENTITY John 1:12, 13 Who are you? You are probably thinking of your name and whose child you are. Right? There is another relationship you need. You need a family relationship you can have by choice. In this family you will have a lot of brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. God Himself becomes your Heavenly Father. Everyone has the privilege of becoming a child of God, but not everyone wants to. The family of God is people who trust Jesus Christ as personal Savior. When you repent of sin, ask God s forgiveness and accept Jesus into your heart as Savior, God adopts you into His great big family of believers. You are then a child of God, an heir to all God possesses. There is no way for you to lose your inheritance or have someone steal it from you. God has given everything to Jesus, and we are joint heirs with Him. Are you a child of God? You are, only if you have the Spirit of God living within you. Only then can you claim to be His child. If you can answer yes, then God calls you a saint and looks at you as His son or daughter. 2
GOD S WORD IN MY HEART appear what we shall be. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet 1 John 3:2 John was writing to believers about our heritage as children of God. Behold [or consider], what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God, he wrote in the verse just before the Memory Verse. Think about the great love God has for you to redeem you and make you a part of His family. We don t know what kind of bodies we will have in eternity, but we know that we will be like Jesus. RABBITS AND HEAVEN Oh! One of our rabbits died, Brian said pointing to the third cage of white furry pets he and Jonathan were about to feed. His friend stopped and stared at the lifeless body. Wow! It IS dead. Gone to rabbit heaven. Brian s head turned to look at Jonathan. Don t make jokes about it, he said. I wasn t, Jonathan said. Where else would it go? Silly. Animals don t go anywhere. They don t have a spirit like people. Only people go to Heaven. He started walking back to the house to tell his dad about the rabbit. I m going to Heaven, Jonathan said matter-of-factly. Good! When were you saved? Saved? Jonathan looked at Brian in surprise. What are you talking about? My dad says we ll go to Heaven if we are good. That is not what the Bible says. The Bible says you have to repent of sin and ask God s forgiveness. You depend on Jesus sacrifice on the cross to pay your sin penalty. Then God forgives you and makes you His child. Oh, well, I ll wait until I m old to do all that. That rabbit was young and it died! Besides, it s great being a son of God and living for Jesus. You mean it? I sure do! Brian said. God is my Heavenly Father, and He wants to give me the very best because I belong to Him. Hm-m-m-m! Jonathan said softly. Brian went inside to tell Dad about the rabbit while Jonathan waited by the back door. He would have to ask Brian more about how to become a son of God. 5
