Sacred Heart Church Winnetka - Glencoe THE TOWER Sunday, November 13, 2011 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Schedule Monday Friday 7:00 am & 8:30 am Saturday 8:30 am & 5:00 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 4:30 pm WELCOME WELCOME ST. COLUMBANUS! Our friends from St. Columbanus will be joining us for 10:30 AM Mass today! There will also be a reception right after Mass in the Parish Center welcoming our visitors and honoring Marsha Adamczyk for her wonderful service as our Pastoral Associate.

Dear Parishioners, Do you think the coinage of the realm at the time of Christ were really called talents? Or is it just a biblical way of pointing out to us that each and every one of us is given certain talents and we are expected to use them for the benefit of one another. I looked up the word talent in my biblical concordance and the only reference to it is this particular passage from the Gospel of Matthew. I think parents probably relate to this Gospel because we all hope our children will develop their talents and use them well. Often children may not realize what talents God has bestowed upon them; and so it is helpful when parents or mentors point out to them that they are gifted in a certain area, and encourage them accordingly. Children sometimes rebel against parental encouragement if they suspect that their parents are either, hoping the child will follow in the parents footsteps, rather than pointing out real potential to their children; or that the parents are attempting to live vicariously through the child. And the children, on occasion, could be right about that. I often wonder if talents as used in the parable also applies to tools that are available to us, but not used for whatever reasons. In my case I have access to apps galore on my smart-phone, computer, etc. but find myself quite satisfied with only using the phone to make and answer calls, and to use the computer only for email and as a modern day typewriter. Spread sheets, texting, Face Book, etc. forget about it that s for my grandchildren. Forgive me Father for I have sinned in that I don t take the time or trouble to learn how to use the magnificent tools with which you have equipped me. Sometimes brides, or families planning a funeral for their Mom, choose the passage from Proverbs that you heard today. They usually love the her value is beyond pearls part, and the her husband entrusting his heart to her has an unfailing prize, and the ending Give her a reward for her labors and let her works praise her at the city gates. Often, though, they will ask if the verse, She obtains wool and flax and works with loving hands. She puts her hands to the distaff and her fingers ply the spindle, can be left out, because it applies to another age, not the age in which we live, and they are right about that, of course. Or they laugh about their own, or their Mom s, inability to even sew on a button. Might it be a talent that has fallen from favor? I know it is not one of mine. Anyway, let us pray that God might help us to discern our talents, or provide us with those who can and are willing to lovingly point them out to us, and encourage us to develop them, so that we might use them to the benefit of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Sincerely, Michael J. McNulty

The YTD shortfall, $16,000 at October 30, is now $21,000. Now is the time to increase donations. We have many ongoing maintenance needs that absolutely cannot be ignored. Boilers need to be cleaned and repaired, fire alarm systems, sprinklers, pumps and elevators need to be inspected, and the list goes on and on. We MUST take care of our house. $0 YTD Collection Shortfall -$5,000 -$10,000 -$15,000 -$20,000 -$25,000 KENWOOD SOUP KITCHEN It has been a tradition here at Sacred Heart to help the Reverend Leroy Sanders provide holiday dinners for folks who might otherwise go hungry, at a time when most of us are enjoying family feasts. If every family here at Sacred Heart could contribute $10, we would have more than enough to cover their needs. To that end, envelopes are available at the entrances and may be deposited in the regular collections. Whatever you can do would certainly help. Thanks so much!

Hey everybody! Be sure to join the Facebook group Sacred Heart Youth Ministry Group and subscribe to updates so you will be in the know on all the great stuff happening with Sparked Hearts! You can also follow us on TWITTER @SparkedHearts!! Check out our new area of the BULLETIN BOARD at the entrance of church it has a calendar of events and more info about what is happening with Sparked Hearts! Everyone in high school is welcome to our events! WHAT IS LOVE? This Sunday (Nov. 13) at 7:30 in the basement of the parish center we will talk about what it really means to love our brothers and sisters even when we don t like them! Activities, discussion, and of course SNACKS! GIVING THANKS Next Sunday (Nov. 20 th ) our 7:30 meeting will prepare us for that great turkey holiday coming up. What are we thankful for? What does it really mean to give thanks? Oh, yeahand SNACKS! TEEN HAITI TRIP Gerry Keenan is coordinating our trip to Haiti this summer! Information sessions for teens and parents will be NOV. 30 and DEC. 4 after 10:30 Mass. Juniors and Seniors are welcome on the trip; we will be leaving JULY 28 and returning AUG. 7. What a great opportunity! 2012 TEEN TRIP TO HAITI 2012 Teens! Are you interested in a Mission/Adventure trip that you will remember for the rest of your life? If you are, the Teen Trip to Haiti 2012 is for you. You will have the chance to experience a new culture, make new friends, and work side-by-side with Teens from Sassier to make a real impact. In 2008, 16 Sacred Heart Teens journeyed to Sassier for 10 days and were transformed by their experiences. Several of them are planning an Alumni trip next Summer. Even though their languages weren t the same, all the Teens (American and Haitian) found it easy to communicate through music, sports, dance, prayer and laughter. We will leave Chicago Saturday, July 28 and return Monday or Tuesday, August 6 or 7 (this is after the end of summer school at NT and Loyola). We will stay together in Sassier in the same accommodations as the 2008 trip. Information Sessions for Teens and Parents will be held Sundays, November 20 and December 4 after 10:30 Mass in the Parish Offices Conference Room. Questions? gkeenan@shparish.com

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am and there will be a reception for students and their families afterwards. Please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers as they celebrate this important sacrament. On Sunday, November 21 st, the 8 th graders from both the School and Religious Education, their parents and sponsors, will celebrate the Confirmation Rite of Enrollment at either the 10:30 am or 4:30 pm Mass. This is considered the official start of the journey for the 8 th graders on their road toward receiving the sacrament of Confirmation in the spring. Please join them in celebrating in this mass and important event. Mark your calendars for the schedule of conferences and days off for the week of November 21 st -27 th. Monday, Nov. 21 st is a noon dismissal for all students. Parent Teacher conferences will be held from 1-8 pm. Tuesday, Nov. 22 nd there is no school for grades JK, and 6 th -8 th. Grades K-5 th will have a half day of classes, dismissing at noon, and conferences will continue throughout the rest of that day. You child s teacher will contact you regarding your conference time, but if you have any questions or conflicts, please contact the teacher directly. Wednesday thru Friday, Nov. 21 st -25 th there is no school for the Thanksgiving Holiday. 1st Grade recently visited The Centre East in Skokie to see "The Life Cycle of a Butterfly" play. This play took a microscopic look at the insect world on the big stage! The audience followed the Monarch Butterfly from her tiny egg, as she grew through her caterpillar state, made the amazing metamorphosis into a butterfly and took her incredible 1,500 mile journey to Mexico. This will enhance the 1st Grade Science curriculum during the Spring when they will learn about the butterfly and its life cycle. The 5th graders attended a field trip to the Holocaust Museum. They have been reading the book Number the Stars in Reading class for the past few weeks. This book takes place during the Holocaust. The students were able to learn a little bit more about what happened during that time to the Jewish people. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS CONGRATULATIONS to the students who will celebrate their FIRST RECONCILIATION next weekend with their families! Students will experience God s love and forgiveness during a communal prayer service on Saturday. We pray for these young people at this memorable occasion. Our thanks also to the parents who are preparing a lovely reception afterwards in the Parish Center. Today our 7 th & 8 th grade morning classes are having their class Mass in the gym. They are also learning about the new changes in the Mass and are practicing some of the new prayers. THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE NEXT SUNDAY MORNING Students in each grade are assigned a food item for St. Columbanus and are to bring that item in next Sunday at class time. A truck is delivering the food to St. Columbanus after classes. Many thanks to the generous volunteers and to all who help make Thanksgiving happen for the people of our sharing parish. Third graders will begin preparing for their Christmas pageant this weekend and the weeks to follow. Much work goes into this event and our thanks to the many volunteers for their hours of loving labor. Speaking of the Christmas pageant, our Congratulations to Suzanne Gerlits and her husband Frank who received the Christifideles Medal Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago this past week for their service to the people of Sacred Heart. Suzanne was the founder and director of the Sacred Heart Religious Education Christmas Pageant for many years until she stepped down a few years ago. What a legacy! Thanks, Suzanne!

Christifideles Medal Awarded Last Sunday Cardinal Francis George awarded parishioners Frank & Suzanne Gerlits the Christifideles Award at Holy Name Cathedral. Archdiocesan parishes are invited to nominate a recipient (or a couple) who understands the implications of Christ s teachings and the Church s role to form a community as the Body of Christ and has ministered in an extraordinary way in the parish. Frank and Suzanne have produced the Christmas Pageant for our Religious Education School for over 20 years and also have been instrumental in the organization and financing of our Memorial Day field Mass at Sacred Heart Cemetery for many years. Congratulations to Frank & Suzanne! SHaring with St Columbanus! Once again, our Sharing Parishes Committee is sponsoring a Christmas Sharing with the families of St. Columbanus, who need our assistance. We are asking Sacred Heart families to share the Joy of Christmas with a St. Columbanus family by purchasing a present for each family member and donating funds for a Jewel gift card. Parishioners can also donate funds for gift cards without sponsoring a family. Information about the St Columbanus families with whom we can share will be available in the Gathering Space after all the Masses on November 19/20, 26/27, and December 3/4. Drop off of Christmas Sharing gifts and money will be on December 16 and 17 at Sacred Heart School. For more information or questions, please contact Mary Doug Brown at marydougbrown@gmail.com or 847-441 8647. Due to space constraints in the bulletin we post certain items on the bulletin board in the gathering space. Check it out!. Please call Cindy Atsaves in the Finance Department for credit card payments for church contributions, school tuition or fees etc at 446-0856 ext. 114.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? On behalf of the Ad Hoc Long-Range Planning Committee and Fr. Bob, we thank the parishioners of Sacred Heart for participating in our Sacred Heart Parish Survey. When we first began crafting the survey, we had no idea of how many responses to expect and we were gratified by the overwhelming response we received -- upwards of 450 submitted surveys! We truly are a People With Heart as our new motto says! What are our next steps? First and foremost, we are committed to sharing the survey responses with the entire parish and we will do so as soon as we are able to collate all the online and manually submitted surveys into a comprehensive format. Just to give you an idea of the volume of material the full report of the results from SurveyMonkey.com is nearly 100 pages long! Subsequent to that, the Committee expects to make several recommendations relative to the utilization of the buildings on our Parish Campus to better reflect the Liturgical, Service, Educational, Spiritual and Social needs of our Parishioners. Additionally, the sincere and thoughtful subjective responses by many parishioners will provide opportunities for our Parish Administrators to focus on better serving the needs of our parishioners. We are well aware that timely communication of the results is critical and it is one of our top priorities! Once again, thank you for caring enough to take the time to respond.
