January 21, 2018 Expect The Unexpected #2 Pastor Charles Mendenhall The following teaching will bring to us clarity and concise teaching of what we are in need of to have the fullness of Gods word working in our lives. Gods plan for us is to rise up with victory and walk in the light of the word. Jesus has come that we might have life and that more abundantly. Heb 4:2 "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." KJV People who have had hard times in their lives over the years, who have risen up and become victorious in their lives, are those who have learned how to walk in faith and believe God. The people mentioned in the 11th chapter of Hebrews were those who were unqualified, were unable to do what God had called them to do but they learned to believe God. He is not a respector of persons and wherever we are at today, the God that we know and the One we serve is wanting to come along side us and help us overcome any circumstance or adversity, any failure that we might be facing, His plan is that we stand in a place of victory and that we are absolutely unstopable in Jesus. In chapter 3 of Hebrews, Paul is writing to a group that started out believing God, but have become discouraged and are wanting to quit, but he is telling them to holdfast their confidence to the end, they will be rewarded. The whole book of Hebrew teaches to holdfast to your confession of faith, don't give up, He is faithful who has promised. In the end we find that their reason for changing was they didn't believe God because of unbelief, they began to be moved by what they were seeing, they could not see victory or overcoming or the land of Canaan where all their needs were to be met. In regards to seeing something now Hebrews 11:1 tells us, Faith is always now, hope is always future. Heb 11:1 "Now faith is the *substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." KJV

*substance - something that can be seen literally **faith sees the answer as a real fact Heb 11:1 "Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality **[faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]." AMP Moses was able to see into the future, he endured as seeing him who is invisible. The patriarches endured as seeing ahead, but because of our mindset, the time that we live in, all that is going on around us, we usually only believe what we can see. This is how Thomas in John 20 responded to the news of Jesus, he was only going to believe what he could see. When we move over into the arena of faith, we see what we are believing for. Faith sees what is not revealed to our senses, our eyes, our nose, our taste, touch and feelings. Faith goes beyond the natural and sees the answer if we are in faith. Heb 4:2 "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." KJV Heb 4:2 "We have heard the message, just as they did. But they failed to believe what they heard, and the message did not do them any good." CEV Heb 4:2 "We received the same promises as those people in the wilderness, but the promises didn t do them a bit of good because they didn t receive the promises with faith." MESSAGE It depends on how we hear things as to the way we see things. The people in the wilderness heard but failed to believe, didn't mix the word with faith. Mark 11: 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." KJV We learn in Job that we need to throw ourselves on Gods mercy. God does great and unexpected acts, Job was out of faith, was totally in fear, probably thought that he was going to going to lose everything. Fear and faith work exactly the same way. Faith is in the realm of light and fear is in the realm of darkness. Job 5:8-9 "I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: 9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:" KJV Job 5:8-9 If I were in your shoes, I d go straight to God, I d throw myself on the mercy of God. After all, he s famous for great and unexpected acts; there s no end to his surprises." MESSAGE

An example of Gods great and unexpected acts was shared in reference to some shingles that needed to be replaced on a home, but then one day the roof was fixed and there seemed to be no answer as to who had replaced them, it was found out that the shingles had been replaced because of a mistake the roofer had made, wrong house, wrong address, no charge. However, later when other shingles needed to be replaced, they could not expect God to do the same thing again, they had to do the work themselves. We cannot put God in a box, expecting Him to work in the same way again. He likes to move in unexpected ways. Read 2nd Kings to learn about what was happening with the Samarians and what the Syrians were doing to them. Elisha was blamed for everything that was happening, but God delivered him and the Samarians. Elisha had prophecied about everything that was going to happen, even though the people heard, they refused to believe. Elisha could see what he was believing in the midst of lack. God does the unexpected in making provision for the peoples deliverance. The four lepers taking a step of faith, found the camp of the Syrians empty, all the plunder was there for them and the people of Samaria, this was totally unexpected. God is famous for doing the unexpected. There was one man who Elisha told what was going to happen, he would not believe, Elisha told him that he would die the next morning, yet he refused to believe and never saw the deliverance that God had for the people. 2 Kings 7:1-2 "Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. 2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof." KJV 2 Kings 7:17-18 "And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him. 18 And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:" KJV 2 Kings 7:5-7 "And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there. 6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. 7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was,

and fled for their life." KJV Gods word must be mixed with faith, in our lack we cannot see Gods provision or abundance. We have a tendency to only believe what we can see. We have to believe that God will do the unexpected, He is famous for doing the unexpected. When we know, that we know, that God is acting on our behalf, we cannot let our senses try to tell us different, we must move over into the realm of faith and begin to see what we are believing God for, because God will do the unexpected. These senses have been given to us for our help, we need to pay attention to them sometimes, but when we are in faith we cannot allow them to be the final say, Gods word must be the final say. Heb 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." KJV Heb 11:1 "Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]." AMP Faith is now, hope is always in the future. Faith takes hold of the promises of God and brings them into the now. Faith has the ability to go out into the future, so the promises can be manifested to us. Our senses may be saying many things, that we are nobodies, worth nothing and because of guilt in our lives we tend to believe the lies, but Jesus came to take care of all those things, take a step of faith and roll them over on Him and become the person God has created you to be that is whole, spirit, soul and body because He loves you. Faith sees as a real fact, can you see yourself as whole? overcoming? As we begin to get understanding of this word, we need to have our believers tuned up, our glasses of faith cleaned, to see beyond our senses, to see the promises of God, because faith sees what we are believing, it is not faith when we believe what we see, questioning what we are seeing, never to be healed or be a whole person. We cannot be blaming everyone else for our problems, it isn't their fault. If we are going to succeed we have to take control of our life, become responsible, until we do that there won't be any lasting change, don't be taking another trip around the mountain, having no stability, but take responsibility and throw yourself on Gods mercy. Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye *desire, when ye pray,**believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." KJV *desire is something that has passion with it, it pulls you in a certain way

** believe means confidence, assurance, trust, faith and to see, believe is the key to receiving Religion tells you that you won't receive anything from God, but if we have believed we have received the things that we have petitioned God for, when we pray the prayer of faith we are going to start seeing them in our lives, those things will come to pass. Mark 9:23-24 "And Jesus said, [You say to Me], If You can do anything? [Why,] all things can be (are possible) to him who believes! 24 At once the father of the boy gave [an eager, piercing, inarticulate] cry with tears, and he said, Lord, I believe! [Constantly] help my weakness of faith!" AMP Mark 9:23-24 "Jesus replied, Why do you say if you can? Anything is possible for someone who has faith! 24 Right away the boy s father shouted, I do have faith! Please help me to have even more. " CEV Matt 17:20 "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." KJV These scriptures tell the story of the man with a son who was demon possessed. The disciples, even though they had been given the power to pray and deliver people they weren't operating in it, they were unable to deliver the young man and Jesus told them it was because of their unbelief. All things are possible if we can see, have confidence, have faith, assurance and trust. We can feel for this father, all he could see was what the demons had done to his son. But when Jesus spoke to him, he cried out with faith, that he could see, that he believed and had faith. We believe but we need our faith increased, the seed planted always grows. God wants us to increase our faith, He wants to help us increase our faith. If we get down on ourselves, questioning whether we can ever have faith, God wants to help, He wants us unstopable, conquering greater adversities, taking on greater giants but it will require a greater and growing faith on the inside of us, but we can do it. Isa 55:8-11 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:

it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." KJV In the following scriptures we are shown the unexpected ways that God increased the bread and fishes and fed the multitudes of people. Jesus had compassion on the people. There is a difference between compassion and sympathy. Compassion always meets the need, will cause someone to meet the need of another, sympathy never meets the need only feels sorry for someone. The disciples questioned Him as to how they could take care of the people, but Jesus did the unexpected, feeding them all, men, women and children. God is a God of multiplication and is always more than enough. This passage of scripture also shows the storm that the disciples encountered while crossing the sea, Jesus calmed the storm, but He is always doing the unexpected, they had no faith only fear. When the Lord comes to us in the midst of our storm, He will tell us to get out of fear and over into the realm of faith. Peter attempted to walk on the water, but was overcome with fear, saw the waves and believed them and began to sink, then Jesus reached out for him and asked him about his little faith, why did you doubt? God is famous for doing the unexpected, He moves with compassion. Matt 14:21-36 "And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. 22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. 34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were

made perfectly whole." KJV Matt 15:38 "And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children." KJV We see what we are believing, if it is defeat, then that is what we will have, if we see victory then that is what we will have. With Jesus we are unstopable, we are overcomers, and we are taking responsibility for our lives and turning it over to Jesus, free from addictions, from hurts of the past and every dissappointment, we are able ministers and we are helpers to other people.
