5TH SUNDAY OF LENT Now there were some Greeks among those who had come to worship at the feast. They came to Philip and asked him, 'Sir, we would like to see Jesus.' It has begun. News of Jesus has spread beyond native-born, Aramaic-speaking Jews. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home. What we do know is that this interaction spurred an interesting comment from Jesus: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. In other words, it has begun. The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: he said this indicating the kind of death he would die. A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies to its life as only a seed. A caterpillar takes on the appearance of temporary death in order to transform into a butterfly. In the Gospels, sacrifice and death are a way of becoming something more than you were before. New life can come from our sacrifices. When we enter into the season with Jesus, our difficulties can transform our perspective. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. As we abstain from meat and fast from eating between meals, we can grow in compassion for the hungry. We can give alms of our time, sacrificially spending time with the lonely, the sick, and the marginalized. Our little Lenten deaths (death to unnecessary preferences; to selfish living; to ignorance of other's pain) can bring new life to the world long after the season is over. This is the invitation this Sunday and every Lenten season, to begin anew from death to life.

RENEW MY CHURCH Renew My Church is a multi-year initiative to ensure the sustainable growth of our Church for the future. The objective of Renew My Church is to create vital, vibrant, life-giving, Catholic communities across the Archdiocese of Chicago and inspire disciples to accompany all members of our family of faith to seize this moment to make the mission of Christ our own for our time. All 344 archdiocesan parishes are divided into 97 groupings, which will meet over the next few years. The pastor and 3 others from each parish are part of the overall grouping feedback and discernment team. The principal and 2 people from the school are also part of that team. St. Jerome Croatian Grouping Discernment Team: Fr. Iva Majstorovi, John Segvich, Jan Ferro, Gina Gio, Jadranka Juri, Nevenka Jurkovi, Eva Mossman. They will meet with other Bridgeport Grouping teams for learning and discussion sessions. Third meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb 27. They will take what they ve discussed back to the parish to share with the parishioners. The parishioners will be able to discuss and the team members will take that feedback back to the Grouping meetings. This will happen several times over about 3 months. During the process, the Grouping will discuss how various potential structures could serve our communities in Bridgeport, given the mission needs of the area and overall resource realities locally and across the archdiocese. Potential structures could include merging existing parishes into one parish with multiple churches, sharing a pastor or closing a site. Cardinal Cupich will make the final determination after evaluating all inputs. QUEEN OF HEARTS ST. JEROME SCHOOL FUNDRAISER This raffle is a weekly 50/50 split the pot.
