A Letter from Father... Page 2 September 20, 2015 Pope Francis is Coming to the USA! The Eighth World Meeting of Families will take place in Philadelphia September 22-27, 2015, and will coincide with the first Apostolic Journey of Pope Francis to the United States. This may be a good time to take a deeper reflection on the importance of the family in America today. Today, more than half of births to American women under 30 years of age occur outside of marriage. Even though we may ignore the decline of marriage and the breakdown of what we know as the traditional family, the evidence is clear. According to a 2013 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, the poverty rate of single-mother households was 45.8%, more than four times the rate of married couple families. Numerous other studies have shown that youth in fatherless homes are much more likely than their peers to drop out of school, to go to prison, abuse drugs, run away or commit suicide. In an address on July 8, 2015, during his recent visit to South America, Pope Francis put it this way, In an age when basic values are often neglected or distorted, the family merits special attention on the part of those responsible for the common good, since it is the basic cell of society. Families foster the solid bonds of unity on which human coexistence is based and, through the bearing and education of children, they ensure the future and the renewal of society. As we prepare for his visit to the United States, we should take time to pray for the success of his visit. It might be useful to attend one of the special Masses throughout the Riverside Vicariate which will focus on the family. Take time to pray with your own family and ask God for the spiritual strength to make your family a unit of love and peace where God is present. Peace,

To clarify, you can write one check for your church contributions for multiple weeks. You cannot include special collections, maintenance fund or Mass intentions on the same check you write for weekly contributions. We apologize for any confusion in our previous bulletins concerning this. Thank you in advance. These courses culminate in initiation at the Easter Vigil for those who are not baptized or who are baptized in another faith. Those persons preparing for First Eucharist and or Confirmation attend classes also, but will be scheduled for completion of their sacraments at a later date. Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 September 20, 2015 Pope Francis Prayer for the Synod of Bishops on the Family Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families, too, may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Toward the end of the second century, a churchman in North Africa, Tertullian, described an early form of penance. Imagine if it had survived! There were three steps to this very public ritual. The unfortunate sinner was brought before the community in an itchy garment of goat s hair. The communities of the day were small and intimate, where everyone knew everyone else. The shame of exposure for a big sin - murder, idolatry, or adultery - would have been profound. The penitent would beg the community for prayers of intercession and then go sit in a place assigned to penitents. After this public confession, the penitent would be assigned some discipline, usually a relatively severe fast or the wearing of distinctive garb. This remedy for sin was for a certain period of time, or at least until the bishop (every small community has its own bishop) judged that enough was enough. The person would then be readmitted to the eucharistic community, although Tertullian doesn t tell us how. Probably the bishop tenderly placed his hands on their heads, precisely where they were anointed at baptism. We do know that the readmission of penitents to the eucharistic table became in some churches a great celebration. There are records from Spain of bishops leading penitents in a dance like processional into the eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The more the world is at its worst, the more we need the Church at its best.
