The Cathedral Community Rochester, New York Building a Solid Future in Hope Capital Campaign

Building a Solid Future in Hope Campaign Prayer Gracious God, through Your Holy Spirit, You continue to bless the Cathedral Community with Your abundant gifts. Grant us Your guidance in the use of these gifts as we look to the future of our parish and its pressing needs. We remember those before us who committed their resources to create a legacy at the Cathedral Community and we gratefully seek to follow in their example. Loving God, as we unite in faith, hope and charity to support our Parish, we ask that You direct our efforts and inspire us to respond generously to this capital campaign with our time, talent and treasure. May our work be worthy of Your goodness and our accomplishments reflect Your glory. Accept our prayer in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dear Parishioner, Since coming to the Cathedral Community nearly 10 years ago, I have had the pleasure to get to know you and many of our fellow parishioners as people of genuine faith, fellowship and service. I am sincerely grateful for all of the ways you have extended that same service, welcome, and hospitality to me as your pastor and friend over this time. Your past support of the Cathedral Community has sustained the ministry of our parish and assisted us at critical moments. Now, I ask that you continue your support of our parish as we work to address our current needs. As you may know, over the past few years we needed to make immediate repairs to some of our parish buildings. This prompted us to conduct a comprehensive study to evaluate the overall condition of our parish facilities. Through this process, we have been able to identify the most pressing needs of our parish, as well as items that we must be prepared to address in the years to come. It is without question that this is a major undertaking! It has already required much time and effort on the part of our parish committees, which are made up of dedicated parishioners who share their gifts and talents. It will continue to require hard work and sacrifice to raise the funds necessary to complete our repairs and improvements. For over 90 years, generations of devoted parishioners have faithfully built up and cared for the wonderful blessing that we now embrace as our spiritual home. These plans are a sign of our diligent and faithful stewardship; it is our responsibility to bring them to fruition. As we begin this very significant phase of our Capital Campaign, we hope to build momentum through sacrificial pledges in order to ensure its success and provide encouragement to other parishioners. As a result of the financial need of this effort, I find myself in a position of approaching you and your fellow parishioners with a significant request. Understandably, we do not know your financial situation and we are very sensitive to your own personal needs. However, I would very much appreciate it, if you are able, to consider a pledge of $5,000, or approximately $20 per week for five years. Such a gift will help us to attain our minimum goal of $1,000,000 and also encourage other parishioners to consider supporting this effort. Please take the time to review this brochure and prayerfully reflect on how you might be able to help. As we thank God for our many blessings here at the Cathedral Community, we hope you will consider a pledge as a sign of confidence in our faith journey and in gratitude to God. We are personally and sincerely grateful for all you have done and continue to do for our parish family. Gratefully, Very Rev. Kevin McKenna Rector Located at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Mother Church of the Diocese of Rochester, NY 296 Flower City Park, Rochester, NY 14615 Phone: (585) 254-3221, Fax: (585) 254-8970 www.cathedralcommunity.org

BUILDING A SOLID FUTURE IN HOPE THE CATHEDRAL COMMUNITY PARISH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The Cathedral Community is recognized as a place of worship, love, and community. Through this campaign, it is our plan to ensure that our parish facilities continue to endure for the families of today and tomorrow. From generation to generation parishioners have responded to the challenges of their time with generosity, humility and passion. We are the beneficiaries of a magnificent inheritance from previous generations of the Cathedral Community. Through their sacrifice and generosity we worship, learn and socialize in a setting rich in beauty and history. Our Building a Solid Future in Hope Campaign will help us to build on the foundation laid by those good and faithful parishioners who have gone before us. Today, it is our sacrifice and generosity that will enable us to pass on to future generations the belief and traditions that have given our life meaning and purpose. Our weekly worship, as well as our celebrations of baptisms, reconciliation services, weddings, confirmations and funerals, allow us to be touched by the grace of God and to find in God our source of true joy, happiness and peace. As with any set of buildings that have been in use on a daily basis for over 90 years, there is a need for occasional repair and updating so that they can continue to serve as the center of our Catholic life. These buildings house numerous ministries and serve as the foundation for carrying out our mission and vision as a parish community which is so important to vibrant ministry and outreach. After consultation with numerous parish committees, including our Trustees, Pastoral and Finance Councils, Building and Grounds Committee and with the approval of the Diocese of Rochester, the decision has been made to launch a campaign to address both our critical needs as well as several other very important projects. Due to the urgency of the situation and condition of the school and convent a few improvements have already been completed using a considerable amount of our reserves, which good stewardship requires us to replenish. However, many more repairs are needed. Proclaiming the Gospel is an ongoing task and joy for the Church of Jesus Christ. Through education, the church seeks to prepare its members to proclaim the message of Christ and to translate this proclamation into action. Religious education at all levels is an integral part of the mission of every parish community. Through this campaign we are exploring the possibility of expanding funding for existing programs of education and introducing new levels of education and youth development including utilizing the services of a youth minister. The focus of this $1 million campaign is to establish a prioritized approach to our most urgent needs, which would help us accomplish the items on the next page. 3

WE NEED YOUR PLEDGE We need your pledge of financial support to ensure the success of the Building a Solid Future in Hope Capital Campaign. Reaching our goal requires gifts of sacrifice rather than convenience and no one can give as much in one lump sum as could be given over a period of 60 months - except in unusual circumstances. Therefore, for the success of our campaign we are asking all parishioners to pledge to the best of their financial ability. This is the only way we can raise a large capital sum. With God s help and your generosity, we will succeed. Your pledge also provides an accounting of how you plan to contribute. This will help the parish properly anticipate the amount of funds available for various projects over the next five years. We ask all parishioners of the Cathedral Parish to consider the suggested gift categories and plan to budget for them accordingly, realizing that a Builder Gift of $5,000 can be made on a sacrifice of about $ 2.50 per day after a 10% down payment. HOW YOU CAN HELP We understand that our parish family is comprised of individuals with a wide range of financial capability. We also believe that every member of our parish is important to our success and, therefore, each is asked to consider making a campaign pledge to the best of their financial ability. Please remember that: Not everyone can make the same gift but Everyone can make the same SACRIFICE! HOW AND WHEN WILL WE MAKE OUR PLEDGES The home visitation phase of the campaign is scheduled to begin in May for those who have not already attended a reception. You can expect a visit starting on Visitation Sunday and continuing for the following two weeks. The volunteers will have already made their pledge to the campaign. They will have answered for themselves the questions which you may have and they will gladly answer those questions for you. Please understand that the volunteers are not professional solicitors; they are your fellow parishioners who have volunteered their time and service to assist the parish in its time of need. Many will be a little nervous about asking for your pledge. Your friendly and gracious reception of the volunteer into your home will make the visit easier and a much more enjoyable experience for both of you. 5

In the past, perhaps you have made one of these gifts to a university, hospital, high school, etc. Leadership and Pacesetter gifts are also important in parish capital campaigns. These gifts allow the parish to maintain an overall average gift high enough to reach its goal. Therefore, for the success of our campaign, the Cathedral Community is also making an appeal to those who have been blessed with the resources to consider a campaign pledge of $15,000, $25,000, $50,000 or higher. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Pledges to the campaign are not legally binding, rather an indication of your good intention. Pledge payments are in addition to your regular offertory contribution. Payment reminders and a special payment return envelope will be mailed to you each month, or according to another plan you may select such as quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Make checks payable to The Cathedral Community. Building a Solid Future in Hope 6

YOUR GIFT - A LASTING MEMORIAL Memorial gifts are a beautiful expression of lasting remembrance and will be available for designation as part of our campaign. Memorials serve as a means of contributing to our campaign while also remembering a loved one. The memorial gift plans, which range from $5,000 and above, offer an excellent opportunity to honor and perpetuate the name of a loved one, living or deceased, or to give thanks for a special favor or blessing from God. A memorial gift represents an ideal opportunity for individual donors to express their charitable spirit, to honor a special person or occasion, or to memorialize a family member or friend. The price of the memorial is based on the desirability of the item and is not determined by its actual cost. At this point you are asked to select the memorial of your choice. At a later date, a form will be mailed on which you will place the requested wording for the memorial plaque. In addition to Memorials, a special Book of Remembrance will contain the names of all donors who wish to be acknowledged. Any gift, large or small, will be remembered this way. During a special liturgical celebration dedicating our renovation work we will bless this book and prominently display it near the new memorial plaque to remain as a sign and symbol of the stewardship covenant between us and our God. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND In this brochure, we have reviewed with you the need for our campaign and our plan for its success. Now we are asking each family to consider making a financial sacrifice to guarantee the success of this project. No one can tell you how much to give, since the financial obligations of each family are different. What you give is a decision between yourself and God, the giver of every good gift. The Cathedral Community belongs to all of us, and only through sacrifice in our parish community can we achieve our goal. Therefore, all contributions, from the smallest to the largest, will be duly and gratefully appreciated. This project is a very important step in the history of our parish. It is also true that we have never failed in our commitments to the church. We know that through sacrifice and prayer all things are possible. This includes the Building a Solid Future in Hope Capital Campaign. Please make your pledge today! The windows at the former convent need to be replaced. The rectory boiler requires replacement. The school building is in the middle of a three-phase roof repair. Buckets needed to be used to catch water in the rectory attic. Building a Solid Future in Hope 8

TAX ADVANTAGES ON CHARITABLE GIVING Federal and state laws on both income and inheritance taxes are designed to encourage gifts to religious organizations. Gifts may be made a number of ways and are highlighted below: Gifts from Current Income... the amount that may be deducted from an individual s current income is based on federal income tax brackets. Information in this brochure is not intended for specific legal advice, therefore the individual should discuss tax advantages with his/her tax consultants. Gifts in the Form of Securities... the donor pays no capital gains taxes on securities that have increased in value since originally acquired, and may deduct the full current market value from taxable income. For more information on donating securities, please contact the parish office at 585-254-3221. Gifts from IRA... a donor who is 70 1/2 or older may satisfy the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for their IRA while avoiding the income tax liability. Official receipts will be given to all contributors and may be used for federal income tax purposes. 9

Questions and Answers &Q A Q What is the overall objective of our campaign? A Through this capital campaign we are seeking to raise $1,000,000 to cover the costs associated with addressing the physical needs of our parish facilities, including repairs and enhancements. Q What is the estimated time frame for completion? A The most critical repairs will begin immediately and the remainder of the projects will be completed as the cash flow is available through pledge redemption. Q How can I help? Can I pledge over time? A Our campaign offers a wide range of gift opportunities allowing parishioners to participate at many levels. You may choose a plan that provides you with both the flexibility and time to complete the payment of your pledge. After carefully reading the campaign material, make a pledge to the best of your financial ability payable over 60 months. A down payment would be applied to the current month and the remaining installments could begin in July 2018. Q Do I need to make a down payment? A No. We suggest a 10% down payment when the pledge is made, but this is not required. You may give less, give more, or make no payment at all. The important step is to make the pledge. Q Will there be a minimum pledge? A No. However we will need a sacrificial pledge, regardless of the amount, from all of our families. We are asking for equal sacrifice, not equal giving. Each family is asked to make the Cathedral Community a priority during our time of need. All pledges are important, needed and appreciated. Q... Can I pay for my memorial gift over 60 months? A... Yes. The memorial gifts can be paid in installments over time, as is the case with all gifts. Q Are the pledges above and beyond my regular offertory? A Yes. We ask that you maintain your regular Sunday offering because the parish will continue to have normal operating expenses. Thanks to the favor God showed to me, I laid a foundation as a wise master builder might do, and now someone is building upon it. 1Corinthians 3:10 Building a Solid Future in Hope 10
