March 15, 2015 2 Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. March 15, 2015 3 Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving! Mayor Koch always used to say: How am I doing? We, at this point in Lent, can ask the same question but the rule is - we must ask it of ourselves. The famous mayor was looking for feed-back mostly positive. Nothing wrong with that in government. In the realm of the spirit, we must look to God for approbation. How am I doing Lord?!!? The Lord who loves us knows how to get us back on track or how to move us to a new level if we are ready for it. It s time to do a re-set on Lent and continue to make the best use of the season. Don t forget - There s no time like Lent to get back to Confession if you have been away for a while. Stations of the Cross - Friday nights at 8pm. Make the Stations in community! St. Francis Carnival We are hosting a Spring Carnival Feast, April 24 th, 25 th & 26 th, right here in our parking lot. We budget for one feast each year and hopefully it makes it possible to end our year in the black. This feast will only be three days long and we have turned the food operation this time over to the Ride Man - Benny from the carnival company. Chance books are being mailed to all parishioners ($5,000 prize) as usual and we will have a nightly 50/50. After this year we will not conduct a spring carnival but rather build on the Feast of St. Francis to have a better-rounded parish celebration in October. In the meantime, please patronize the Spring Carnival and help the Parish build community and relationships and of course have some fun while helping the Parish with its bills! St. Francis Parish Appreciation Dinner A Special Thanks to John & Josie DeStefano for their donation of fabulous desserts from Torta Fina to our Parish Appreciation Dinner!

March 15, 2015 4 Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life Thanks for Giving First Fruits & Taking a Step!!! (Regular Sunday Offertory) Last Sunday s weekly offering: $10,112.00 Last Year s Sunday offering: $9, 852.00 Bulletin Reflection All that we have and all that we are comes from the Lord. We are truly His handiwork, says St. Paul in the second reading, created in Christ Jesus to lead the life of good deeds which God prepared for us in advance. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who remain steadfast in their Lenten promises through increased prayer, sacrifice and almsgiving. March 15-Fourth Sunday of Lent: In today s Gospel, God demonstrates great love for us by sending his Son so that we may believe in him. We demonstrate our great love for God by doing good works: reaching out to others, acting in justice and charity. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that your nickel, dime, quarter or dollar is multiplied by the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box. SUNDAY READINGS for next week, March 22nd Jeremiah 31:33 34 Because Israel broke the original covenant, the Lord will establish a new one in which God s law is wri en upon their hearts and all shall know the Lord. Hebrews 5:7 9 During his life, Jesus prayed to the Father out of obedience and wisdom of God s saving power. God made Jesus perfect and the source of eternal salva on. John 12:20 33 Jesus proclaims the importance of faithful service, saying, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it will not bear fruit. Then a voice from heaven glorified him. Send us your email if you would like to start receiving Bringing Home the Word, a weekly message based on the Sunday Scripture readings. Special thanks to John of LOCAL CESSPOOL SERVICE INC. in Greenlawn for responding to an emergency in a very timely manner and for donating his services to the Church! Stations of the Cross every Friday at 8pm during Lent This spring, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, April 19 at the Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville and on Sunday, April 26 at the Church of Maria Regina in Seaford. Both Liturgies will begin at 2:30pm. Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the rectory. Registration must be received by the Office of Worship by April 6 for the April 19 liturgy and by April 13 for the April 26 liturgy. There will be additional celebrations in the fall for those who may find that more convenient. If you have any questions you may call 516-678-5800, extension 207. Above all we need the courage to persevere in the fatherly care of our families through time into the endless reaches of eternity. Amen. Intercessions for Life: March 15 th Fourth Sunday of Lent For each person suffering from the loss of a child through abortion: may Christ console them in their grief and fill their hearts with peace and hope. We pray to the Lord. Word of Life: It is this [merciful] love which must inspire humanity today, if it is to face the crisis of the meaning of life and, especially the duty to defend the dignity of every human person. Thus the message of divine mercy is also implicitly a message about the value of every human being.
