Holy Spirit Catholic Church September 2, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk The problem Jesus is addressing in our Gospel today is that of living like a mechanical person. A mechanical person lives only on the surface. This kind of person thinks that appearances are what count the most. Our world is full of this kind of living. So much in our culture promotes this kind of life. So much business is pushed by this desire to be thought of as up-to-date or current. Style has definitely more to do with our assessment of people than content. Jesus is saying this is all upside down. It s not how we look or dress that counts. It is not even how we worship. It is what comes out of our heart that matters most. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts This also means that it is from within, from the human heart, that good intentions come. Jesus was making the point that the outward observance of certain ceremonies is not an accurate indication of what a person is really like. You can go to church and be actively involved. You can sing in the choir, be on committees, give your money, give your time, give your talent, observe the rules and laws, and outwardly be as faithful and committed as anyone who is a member; and yet, do it all for the wrong reasons. Sitting in church doesn t make you any more Christian than sitting in a garage makes you a car. While those who seek to follow Jesus will find their way to church, it does not necessarily follow that those who come to church are Christians. We may appear to be something other than what we really are. This should really frighten us. Or if it doesn t frighten us, it should be a wake-up call to stop and take a very close look at ourselves. It is so easy to fool ourselves when it comes to our religious observance. Remember, going to church is a guarantee of nothing! The religious leaders in Jesus time certainly went to their churches, but that action in itself didn t lead them any closer to God. They honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from God. Jesus wants us to live with the hearts of flesh. He wants genuine people living genuine lives. If you are living in a family, you know that hiding from one another behind superficial behavior only leads to distance from one another. Wives and husbands can t survive if they are not genuine with one another. Nor can parents with children. Nor can we; in the community of the Church. We all need to be living authentic lives lives where heart is not just a mechanical pump but the source of love and kindness. May we all allow Christ into our hearts, and be willing to show those hearts to one another. Holy Spirit Catholic Church September 2, 2018 CHILDREN S FAITH FORMATION CLASSES ARE OFFICIALLY BACK IN SESSION AS OF SUNDAY, AUGUST 26! If you missed our Parent Meet & Greet, please stop by the front desk and pick up a packet of important information about the 2018/19 Faith Formation year including all the great special events and activities planned. And, if you haven t yet registered your children for Faith Formation, it s not too late! You can pick up registration paperwork between 10 a.m. & 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the Community Center front desk or on Sunday mornings during Faith Formation. We are closed from 12 noon to 1 p.m. for lunch However, many classes are full so to be on the safe side, you might want to call ahead and check on availability. We have also entered Late Registration, so fees have increased, as well. The deadline for Faith Formation registration for the 2018/19 year is Sunday, October 7 for children needing to fulfill the one-year attendance requirement (that s first grade and up) for the following year. After that, classes will be officially closed except for PK3, PK4 or those who have already celebrated sacraments (pending room availability). SACRAMENTS & SUCH: The deadline for Faith Formation registration for the 2018/19 year is Sunday, September 16 for children wishing to enroll in our sacramental preparation program. If you have already registered for the 2018/19 sacramental preparation program and have yet to turn in your baptismal certificate copy, please do so ASAP as your paperwork will not be processed until you provide us with the required documentation! The first CONFIRMATION sacramental preparation session for all registered youth is on Sunday, September 16 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the dining room. This is for PARENTS ONLY. You can contact Sharon Bush at 972.298.9460 for childcare needs. Please contact Devyn Buschow, ext. 16, with any questions regarding Confirmation registration and/or requirements. There will be no Faith Formation classes on Sunday, September 2, as we celebrate the Labor Day Holiday! Faith Formation classes will hit the ground running on Sunday, September 9! I still in need one Parent Pew Patrol (better known as the Hall Monitor!) for our 11:00 a.m. session if anyone is interested. It s an easy job, but greatly needed, especially from a safety and security standpoint. If you have 75 minutes to spare on Sunday morning, please see Deborah. There s always fresh coffee and a comfy chair. Catechists, don t forget to stop by the front desk and pick up your folder and have your picture taken for your class ID. Additionally, all Catechist ID Cards need to be turned in ASAP so that we can order shirts for all the new catechists and aides! Just a gentle reminder to all to not forget that with the start of the Faith Formation year, the familiar orange safety cones and locked gate will be in place. For safety s sake, PLEASE DON T MOVE THE CONES! They are there to ensure the safe passage of both children and parishioners, as they move from the Church to the Community Center and vice versa. And please be kind to our Parking & Security Attendants who are here to assist with safe vehicular traffic. Thanking everyone in advance! This year, the Church will celebrate National Catechetical Sunday on September 16, and will focus on the theme "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ" On this day, the many men and women who serve in the Church s catechetical ministries are recognized and affirmed for sharing their gift of faith with others. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for ALL to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. So take a moment on the 16th to say THANK YOU to your child s catechist for taking on such a commitment. And, since Grades 1-6 will be attending Mass as a class that day, what a wonderful occasion to truly recognize this year s catechists by having them in attendance with their Faith Formation class! Catechists, Youth Mentors & RCIA Team members, you and your immediate family are cordially invited to an Appreciation Brunch, in your honor, from 8:15-11:15 a.m. in the dining room prepared by our own Knights of Columbus.
