Evergreen United Methodist Church 1120 Evergreen Court, Wahpeton, ND 58075 November, 2016 Volunteers Needed for Several Activities By Sandy Olson The worship work group is still looking for volunteers willing to work on a short-term committee to plan events to commemorate important anniversaries coming up for our church. These would be: the merging of the Methodist and EUB churches, the merger of Great Bend and Wahpeton churches, and perhaps others. We have one volunteer and will have one person from the worship work group. Length of membership in our church doesn t have to be a criterion to serve; we need someone with creativity and great ideas! Please contact the church office or Sandy Olson if you are willing to serve on this important committee. On October 28 & 29, a team from Evergreen took part in a mini-mission trip to Spirit Lake Ministry Center. In addition to fellowship and the opportunity to bring much-needed donations of warm bedding, coats and diapers, the team spent Friday evening learning about the ministry Mike and Libby Flowers will be coordinating at the Ministry Center. Pictured above from left to right, back row: Wayne Millar, Dianne Millar, Jan Moore, Jean Freden, Alinda and George Bassingthwaite and Harris Bailey; front row: Peder Anderson, Tiana Bohn, Pastor Jen, and Fern Bailey. Following the November 20 th worship service, the church and entrance spaces will be decorated for Advent and Christmas. This task goes so much faster with many hands to help, so please consider joining the worship ministry and other volunteers in this task. We plan to order pizza so that we don t faint dead away while we work! The second Journey Renewal meeting will be held at 12:30 pm, following the decorating party. Please join us and bring your family. Also needed are musicians for the Christmas season. Vocals, instrumentals and bell ringers are all needed. See page 4 for additional details. Sunday, November 6 is All Saints Day! Join us for All Saints Day worship, as we come together to celebrate and honor the saints who have passed on in the last year with a time of prayer, thanksgiving, and candle-lighting. We will also share in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Daylight saving time ends remember to fall back on Nov. 6

Grow Page 2 Evergreen United Methodist Church November, 2016 Children s Ministry By Becky Dockter We have a great group of kids coming to Sunday School this year! Here are some items for your calendar: No Sunday School on Sunday, November 27 (Thanksgiving Weekend) We will be starting to practice our Christmas program songs soon, so we hope to see all the kids as many weeks as we can! The Christmas program will be held on December 11th during the 10:00 am service. No Sunday School on Sunday, December 25 or January 1 Youth News By Pastor Jen The youth have had another fun, full month! From game nights revolving around Minute to Win It games, to service projects including helping with set up and preparations for our church bazaar, we ve had a busy few weeks! on October 30, when 6 of us dressed in our Dr. Seussthemed costumes and made our way to the annual Zoo Boo to hand out candy and greet the community. Laughter, fellowship, lots of high fives (especially from Horton!) were abundant, and it was a great opportunity to have some fun service time together. We are already looking forward to next year! November will be another full month with the annual Day of Hope on Wednesday, November 9 (all are welcome to attend, no matter your age! We will depart early this night: join us at Evergreen at 6:50pm, and we will ride together to the school). With Thanksgiving at the end of the month, we will also plan to have one week off, as we will not meet on Wednesday, November 23. Our biggest need in youth ministry currently continues to include our desire to hire a Director of Christian Education, which, you may realize, our Staff- Parish is open to hiring as one position (children & youth), or as two separate ones, depending on the needs of the applicants. If you or someone you know may be a good fit for one of these positions, please be in touch with Pastor Jen! The highlight of this month seemed to come 80th Birthday Celebration for George Bassingthwaite Join us for coffee & cake, Sunday, Nov. 6, after worship service. Newlywed Congratulations Go out to Jody-Lynn Kostuck and Michael Marsh, married by Pastor Jen at Evergreen UMC on Saturday, Oct. 8. Sign up to purchase a toy for the Christmas Kids project! Give Thanks to the Lord! Ecumenical Thanksgiving Celebration Sponsored by the Richland/Wilkin Ministerial Sunday, November 20, 4 PM @ St. John s Church Coffee and desserts after the Service. Everyone is invited

Thank God for Dedication to Purpose and an extra measure of Stamina and Good Humor to see us through to that eventful day! And what a day it was. Beautiful Fall weather blessed us all as we arrived at church to welcome the Community in to enjoy the hospitality of our volunteers with good food, shopping, and DONUTS. We actually sold out of donuts within 15 minutes of opening our doors to the public. Talk about a record breaker! Thank you to all who participated, donated, prayed for the success of the event. If you haven t yet experienced Bazaar, I urge you to come work with us next year you ll encounter a good feeling a joy knowing you participated in working for Mission Projects around the world, as well as contributing to the General Fund of EUMC. The next General Meeting of UMW will be held Thursday, November 10 th, at 7pm. This will be our 2017 Installation of Officers meeting. All outgoing and incoming officers should be in attendance, if possible. The UMW Prayer Vigil for November is scheduled for November 25 th. These activities would include providing food and serving for funeral lunches, work at potluck dinners, work and call for food donations for the Bazaar, as well as a host of other duties. Each of these groups will alternate throughout the year. Two co-chairpersons will head each group and will contact members and friends when there is a need. If any members and friends are unable to work or prepare food, a monetary contribution would be helpful. The serving group lists will be revised before January 1. If you would like something changed before that new list is completed, or if you have any questions please call Alinda Bassingthwaite 642-6575 or Jean Freden 640-1641. Respond Page 6 Evergreen United Methodist Church November, 2016 2016 Fall Bazaar: A Community Outreach/Financial Success By Dianne Millar Many, many thanks to those who helped in any way with the fall bazaar! We had a gorgeous day and a very successful event with a great turnout from the community and great support from the church body including the Youth Group. Expenses have not yet been paid and miscellaneous income continues to trickle in, so there is not yet a final amount to report. However, the initial bank deposit was 5,495.01. Of that amount, $1,160.00 is attributed to donut sales, $420.00 for take & bake orders for the Chicken Huntington, around. $300.00 for donations in Grandma's Attic and roughly $42.00 for the sale of greeting cards. Due to technical difficulties, we do not have a breakdown as to income received for the luncheon, crafts, and bake sale. Picture Above: Waitresses ready to serve our guests. Lower Left: Youth group volunteers help to wash gourds in the kitchen. Lower Right: A full house of patrons enjoy their day with friends at the Bazaar. Craft Night! Alicia Blaufuss is offering a craft night on Dec. 6 at 6:30 pm, to teach us how to make holiday wreaths out of ribbon. Sign-up on bulletin board by Nov. 20 if planning to attend (so we have enough supplies ordered). Cost of materials will be between $30-35. Our Sympathies: Our sympathies to Janice Walter on the Oct. 14 th death of her husband Fred. A celebration of Fred s life was held at Evergreen UMC on Oct. 17. Our sympathies to Jean & Merle Rubish on the recent death of Jean s brother, Garth West of Garden City, MN, he died Sept. 2 and her brother-in-law Myron Janke of Wheaton MN, he died Oct. 23.

Pastor s Ponderings Pastoral Letter http://www.evergreenumc.com Evergreen United Methodist Church Page 7 Ever year when November arrives, I find myself thinking even more than usual about gratitude. As our Charge Conference (annual meeting of the church at which members vote to approve our budget and nominations, as well as dream about what is yet to come) was on October 30, I have also been reflecting on all that has happened in the past 12 months. These two things together leave me with just two words that stay with me: Journey Renewal. In February of 2016, our Administrative Council voted unanimously to take a step of faith and say yes to the invitation to be a part of the Journey Renewal program. As a part of the pilot cohort, there were more questions than answers about what this would look like, but since we could sense God is already on the move here in this place, it seemed like an excellent opportunity to say yes to God, and yes to this opportunity to rejuvenate and revitalize our church. Indeed: Journey Renewal has taken us on a journey. It began in March with our first training on Breakthrough Prayer: a movement that tangibly changed the lives of attendees as we began to see and understand prayer in a new light. Moved to pray like never before, our team even wrote a prayer together, which the congregation is encouraged to pray every single day (and which Pastor Jen prays in her Pastoral Prayer every Sunday during worship): Almighty God, breakthrough Evergreen UMC and do bold new things in our lives and community. Change our hearts and open our ears to hear your voice. Empower us to boldly love and serve one another for the sake of your kingdom, as together we seek to make new disciples for the transformation of the world. Amen. In addition to praying these words and seeking new ways to live into the boldness of following Christ faithfully, this prayer invites us to embrace newness and change. It invites us to embrace new opportunities to grow in our discipleship, and to engage others around us in order to make new disciples. Friends: this is no small task. It has taken a great deal of work from our Journey Renewal Team, who have been attending workshops throughout the year to learn about the importance of, and steps toward, doing these things. In addition to prayer, we have learned about outreach and marketing, discipleship, using our spiritual gifts and leadership skills, growing generous givers, and more. In addition to our trainings, our team has also worked hard on a self-study of our congregation and surrounding community. Many of you heard about this at our first feedback session in October. Yet I want to invite even more of you to come, dream, and vision together with us as we gather again on Sunday, November 20 from 12:30-3pm. During this time, our Journey Renewal Team will share their findings from parts of the study, and ask for your feedback to help with others. What are your hopes and dreams for our church? What role might you feel called to play in living those out? There s no time like the present to get involved, and to use your voice and insight for good. I hope you ll help us to do that as we turn the next page and continue in this life-giving chapter in the ministry of Evergreen UMC. Indeed: I am grateful to be on this Journey to Renewal here with you may God continue to lead us into this new chapter of ministry together. Pastor Jen Tyler
