SESSION 1 INTRODUCTION A SUMMARY PASSAGE ROMANS 11:25-29 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. (v.26) And so all Israel will be saved as it is written: The Deliverer will come out of Zion and he will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; (v.27) For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins. (v.28) concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. (v.29) For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. SESSION ONE OPERATION OLIVE TREE GOD S STRATEGIES FOR THE JEWISH NATION - ROM. 9-11 Introduction What happened to Israel in the First Century? They rejected their promised Messiah. (Lk. 19:14) They came under God s condemnation (Rom. 3:19,20) What about God s covenants and promises with Israel? (Rom. 11:1,11) These three chapters are a theodicy i.e. a vindication of God in his dealings with the nation of Israel (Rom. 11:33-36) To the Jew first (Rom. 1:16,17; 2:9-11). The divine law of priority. I.THE ELECTION OF ISRAEL - PAST ROM. 9 concerning the election (Rom 11:28) ROOTS AND BRANCHES GROWING(see diag. p.6,7) 1. Paul s desire for Israel (9:1-3) a. His burden and sacrifice 2. Israel s Privileges (9:4,5) The Adoption (National) The Glory (the Schekinah) The Covenants The Law The Priestly services The Promises (Unconditional) The Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) The Messiah A Great calling (Neh. 9:7,8) A Great Nation (Gen. 46:3; Amos 3:1) Page 8

SESSION ONE (cont.) 3. God s sovereign ELECTION of Israel (9:6-13) In these three chapters will be found some of the deepest and most difficult statements even penned by the Apostle Paul. We shall therefore have need of patience in our study of what follows. The chief obscurities are doubtless concerning Paul s teaching about Divine Sovereignty and Election. But it should be noted that in the Apostle s statements which are so difficult to grasp in their fullness he is discussing national privilege rather than individual salvation, though he does speak of individuals as vessels of mercy (Rom 9:23). Many have got into great bondage of heart through not recognising this. We must take Paul s statements in their setting, and not detached or isolated from this setting, else we may read into them utterly wrong ideas about God. (Norman C. Deck - Bible study notes - emphasis added). a. TWO GENEALOGIES The roots of the Olive Tree (see diag. p. 7). a. There is an election within the Patriarchal Family. Not all Israel are of the promised line. (v.6). b. The promises of God were intended for those in the Nation who were children of God by faith the remnant, not mere physical descent. (compare John 1:47; Rom. 2:28,29). c. The distinction between the children of the flesh (natural descent) and the children of promise - The promised line (v.7) (see p.10) Abraham - Isaac - Jacob - The remnant - All Israel The natural seed Ishmael, Esau, Jacob s physical descendants (see diag. p. 10). b. TWO NATIONS(9:6-13) The roots and branches of the Olive Tree (see diag. p. 7) a. Concerning the (corporate) election b. The original Old Testament contexts are the key to understanding God s strategies of the election. A national corporate election c. The older shall serve the younger (v.12). Gen 25:13 d. God s freedom in election of Israel (9:14-18) a. God s sovereign freedom (9:14-16) b. The case of Pharaoh (9:17,18). Sovereign hardening in judgment with Pharaoh representing the Egyptians demonstrates Israel s rejection and hardening today. 5. The Power of the Potter (9:19-24) a. The Potter s work from the same lump of clay two possible outcomes one vessel for honour another for dishonour. c.f. Jer.18:5-12. - The national perspective. 6. The confirming message of the Prophets (9:25-29) a. The prophets foretold God s dealing with Israel in mercy and election along with hardening, blinding and mercy shown to Gentiles as recorded in Hosea and Isaiah. (vv. 25-29) b. The Gentiles obtained mercy but Israel rejected God s way and Messiah (9:30). SESSION TWO OPERATION OLIVE TREE GOD S STRATEGIES FOR THE JEWISH NATION ROM. 9-11 II THE REJECTION OF ISRAEL - PRESENT (9:30 10:21). BRANCHES BROKEN OFF(see pp.6,12). INTRODUCTION What happened to Israel in the first century? Israel did not submit to the message of God s righteousness through Christ in the Gospel (10:3,4) They have not all obeyed the Gospel (10:16) Israel stumbled bringing blessing to the Gentiles in God s plan (9:32) Summary passage (11:25) Blindness in part to Israel 1.ISRAEL S REFUSAL OF GOD S RIGHTEOUSNESS IN THE GOSPEL THE JEWISH FUTILITY OF WORKS-RIGHTEOUSNESS (9:30-10:21) 1. THE JEWISH FAILURE EXPLAINED (9:30-33). a. The place of human responsibility before God. God is sovereign - man is responsible to respond (v.30) b. The reason for Israel s failure They pursued law works righteousness (vv.31,32) They stumbled over God s stone the Messiah (vv. 32-33) c.f. Isa. 28:16; 1Pet. 2:8. 2. THE JEWISH REJECTION OF CHRIST AND FAITH-RIGHTEOUSNESS (10:113) a. Paul s Prayer (v.1) b. The reason for Israel s error (vv.2-4). Christ is everything even for righteousness (Jer. 23:5, 6;1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21). c. The nature of faith righteousness (vv. 5-11) Page 13

SESSION TWO (cont.) THE JEWISH REJECTION (cont.) Two ways of righteousness (vv.5-7).faith vs. works (obedience) JUSTIFICATION IS BY FAITH ALONE (Rom. 3:28; 4:2; Gal. 2:16) - BUT THE FAITH WHICH JUSTIFIES CAN NEVER BE ALONE (Gal. 5:6; Jam. 2:26). WORKS DON T JUSTIFY A MAN BUT A JUSTIFIED MAN WORKS (Eph.2:8-10; Titus 3:5; 2:14) Scriptural support for faith righteousness (vv. 8-11) The theme of the Roman Epistle (Rom. 1:16,17) The example of Abraham in the book of Romans. Abraham was justified by faith alone. (Rom. 4:1-3) (Gen. 15:6). Also, Abraham was obedient to all of God s commandments. (Gen. 26:4,5) 3. THE JEWISH NEGLECT OF THE GOSPEL OF GRACE (10:14-21 a. The world-wide proclamation of the Gospel of Grace (10:14-21) Israel had opportunity they could not plead ignorance (vs. 14, 15) b. Israel s disregard for God s righteousness in the Gospel (vs. 16, 17) c. Israel rejected the offer of faith-righteousness (vs.18-21) They heard (v.18) They knew (v.19) They were obstinate (v.21) N.B. The remarkable strategy of God. Through Israel s fall God opened the door to the nations. The wild olive branches (Gentiles) were grafted in partaking of the root and fatness of the Olive Tree (11:17) ISRAEL S REJECTION - PRESENT (Rom. 10)..they have not obeyed the Gospel....a disobedient and contrary people.. BRANCHES BROKEN OFF But...God has not cast them away forever. See Romans 11 Page 14

Page 15

SESSION 3 OPERATION OLIVE TREE - ROM 9-11 III THE RESTORATION OF ISRAEL - FUTURE - ROM 11 INTRODUCTION BRANCHES GRAFTED IN The Apostle Paul now completes outlining God s strategies in dealing with the Jewish Nation. Paul reveals the restoration, recovery, reinstatement and conversion of national and ethnic Israel, to bless the world in the coming Messianic (millennial) age. This is restoration not amalgamation into the Church. Two Important Questions 1. Has God cast away His people? (Rom 11:1) 2. Has Israel stumbled and fallen irretrievably? (Rom 11:11) HAS GOD CAST AWAY HIS PEOPLE?NO! Rom. 11:1. 1. ISRAEL S REJECTION IS NOT TOTAL (11:1-10) 1. The Nature of Israel s Rejection a. Israel s Rejection is not TOTAL because the Apostle himself was saved. (v.1) b. Israel s Rejection is not TOTAL because a remnant is now being saved by Grace (vv.2-6) c. Israel s Rejection is not TOTAL because the present unbelief was foreknown and predicted. (vv.7-10) HAS ISRAEL STUMBLED & FALLEN IRRETRIEVABLY?NO! Rom 11:11. 2. ISRAEL S REJECTION IS NOT FINAL (Rom. 11:11-25) God s purpose in Israel s Rejection (vv.11-24) a. To extend Gospel opportunity to the Gentiles (v.11) b. To provide an incentive for Israel s salvation (vv. 11-14) c. To restore Israel to the place of world blessing (vv. 12-16) d. To provide warning & blessing to the Gentile Church (vv.17-24) Page 16

SESSION 3 (cont.) 2. ISRAEL S REJECTION IS NOT FINAL (Rom. 11:11-25 cont). 1. God s purpose in Israel s Rejection (vv.11-24) cont. (see diag. p.15) The Olive Tree roots and branches (vv.11-16) The Olive branches broken off (vv.17-21) The wild Olive branches grafted in to the Olive Tree (vv. 17,18) Gentiles partaking of the root and fatness of the Olive Tree.(v.17) The great secret blindness in part to Israel until... Israel grafted in again when the Redeemer comes to Zion. This will bring worldwide Messianic Kingdom blessing forever. (vv.12,15, 24, 25). (Zech. 13:8; Rom. 9:17; Isa. 66:7,8) 3. ISRAEL S RESTORATION AND CONVERSION (11:26-32). 1. Israel s Restoration prophesied And so all Israel will be saved (v. 26) a. The coming Deliverer and the New Covenant (vv. 26,27) I. The Return of the Redeemer (Isa. 59:16, 17) II. The Recompense of the redeemer (Isa. 59:18) III. The Reign of the Redeemer (Isa.59:19-60:1 ff ) b. The Nation though now enemies of the Gospel is greatly beloved (v. 28) 2. God s unalterable pledge His gifts and calling are irrevocable (v. 29). Rom. 9:1-5; Ps. 89:34-37. Jer. 31:3,4. 3. God s Design of Mercy to all men (vv. 30-32) a. Their disobedience led to mercy extended to Gentiles (vv. 30-32) 4. Restoration not Amalgamation into the Church Page 17

4. CONCLUDING DOXOLOGY (11:33-36) a. Praise and wonder of God s ways and strategies. God the source of all things out from Him God the course (or agent) of all things through Him God the goal of all things unto Him be glory forever, Amen ISRAEL S RESTORATION ROM. 11 All Israel will be saved BRANCHES GRAFTED IN CONCLUSION/CHALLENGE SOME TAKE - HOME TRUTHS 1. PRAISE! Oh the depth of the wisdom of God - His ways (STRATEGIES) are past finding out 2. PRAY! My prayer and heart s desire for Israel is... 3. PROPOGATE! How shall they hear...? Page 18
