University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship November 19, 2017 11:45am 24th Sunday After Pentecost <<WE GATHER>> Instrumental Prelude: 12 Duets for Clarinet KV 487 -- #1 Allegro; #4 Polonaise; #5 Larghetto W. A. Mozart, arr. Mark Feezell Ward Dennan and Brian Schappals, clarinet duet Hymn #2: Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful flesh thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, Perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Welcome & Greeting Time Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Confession & Assurance of Pardon Hymn #227: Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me Rock of Ages, cleft for me, et me hide myself in thee; Let the water and the blood,

From thy wounded side flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save from wrath and make me pure. Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill thy law s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to thy cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress, Helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly, Wash me, Savior, or I die! While I draw this fleeting breath, When my eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee. <<WE HEAR>> Stewardship Story Jesus and Financial Freedom/Prayer of Dedication Tithes & Offerings: How Great Thou Art arr. Brian Schappals Ward Drennan and Brian Schappals (clarinet duet) Sermon: Forerunner George Hinman Text: Hebrews 12:1-13 & 6:20 (p. 978, 974) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children "My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished by him; 6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts." 7 Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? 8 If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. 9 Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. 11 Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. 6:20 where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. <<WE RESPOND>> Hymn of Response #560: May the Mind of Christ My Savior May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day, By his love and power controlling all I do and say. May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph only through his power. May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, That I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea, Him exalting, self abasing this is victory. May I run the race before me, strong and brave to face the foe, Looking only unto Jesus, as I onward go. May his beauty rest upon me as I seek the lost to win, And may they forget the channel, seeing only him. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Healing Prayers Benediction _+_+_+_+_+_+_ PASTORAL PARTICIPANTS George Hinman, Senior Pastor Jennifer Kenney, Liturgist David Gardner, Director of Worship & Arts Hannah Byun, Principal Organist CURRENT SERMON SERIES: WHO IS JESUS? To know him is to love him Do you love me? It s the question at the heart of life. Jesus asked it. For Jesus, the story of our lives is the story of our loves. So what do we love most? And what is most worthy of our love? Those who first knew him and saw him risen from the dead became convinced that the answer must be: Jesus. They knew how much he loved them, and they loved him. Their lives and their world were transformed by that love. But how can we love him today? How can our hearts be awakened and reshaped by love for him? We begin by getting to know him. To know him is to love him. The New Testament epistle to the Hebrews has been called the fifth gospel because it presents rich images of Jesus not on earth but in his ongoing heavenly ministry. These images not only tell us what he does but more importantly who he is. It s good news that gives us great hope and rekindles our affections for so great a Savior. NEXT WEEK: November 26 My Helper Scott Gronholz Text: Hebrews 13:1-16 CONDOLENCES Our sympathy to Colleen and Chuck Orrestad and family in the death of Colleen s mother, Barbara L. Dirkelyst, who died on November 8. Our sympathy to Marjorie Portin and family in the death of Marjorie s husband, Vernon Portin, who died on November 13.
