The Senior Adult Ministry functions as a part of the Family Ministry of Woodlawn Baptist Church. As we work to make Jesus Christ known in the lives of Senior Adults, as well as THROUGH the lives of Senior Adults, it is our goal to involve every one in some type of ministry. A variety of ministries are represented on this calendar, and a number of other ministries are working diligently To care for our frail elderly, (OASIS) To pray for the lost, as well as special needs, (Prayer Teams) To encourage those in our Nursing Homes as well as provide a ministry that brings health and well -being to our singers, () To build strong relationships with Baptist Children s Homes and NCBAM*, To educate and provide safety in the homes of our elderly, (Smoke Alarm Teams) To encourage our Seniors to grow and learn spiritually (Navigators Wednesday morning Bible Study) To provide resources for more effective living of our lives (NCBAM; Monthly Meetings) Will you join us as we NAVIGATE through this journey of life? Will you help us to set the course for the next generation of believers? Will you help us make Christ known in our community and across our world? We look forward to having fun and learning and growing together! *NCBAM - North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministries is a division of Baptist Children s Homes of North Carolina, and an entity of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention.

Seniors, from 65 to 105, have life, vigor, energy, and enthusiasm for some type of ministry and our hope is that each and every senior adult will navigate into a ministry that has long term effect on the lives of those around them. We have long been setting the course as we have raised our children, and often our grandchildren, and we can impact so many lives with the vision of setting the course for a new generation. I n the writings of Paul to his beloved son in the faith, Timothy, he begins by admonishing Timothy to stir up the faith. It was a faith that had begun in his grandmother Lois and was passed on to his mother, Eunice, and Paul was convinced was within Timothy as well. In the second chapter of 2 Timothy, Paul writes this: and the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. (v.2) It is this kind of example that I see in the theme, NAVIGATORS: Setting the Course for a New Generation! Senior Adults have laid a strong foundation in their children and now in their grandchildren, just like Lois and Eunice, with the admonition to entrust it to others. Bill Gaither wrote a song for the Vocal Band entitled Passin the Faith Along that talks about the relay runner, taking the baton, running the course, and then passing the baton to the next runner. To the Philippian church, Paul writes, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (3:14) As we build a legacy in the 21st century, Senior Adults are investing their lives in people all around them, in families, friends, neighbors, and in their brothers and sisters in Christ, actively carrying the baton, and passing it along. Paul, in his conclusion to Timothy, wrote, I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith! (4:7) May that be our goal and focus as 21st century seniors, serving Christ, navigating the course.

Samaritan s Purse Shoebox Project Filling Shoeboxes to send around the world has been a tremendous project of love and caring for the children of the world. Part of the fun and fellowship is the folding party each September when a group of 12-15 Seniors get together in KidZone and turn the flat pasteboard into an actual shoebox. We are thankful and blessed that we can make an impact on children around the world by folding, packing and shipping shoeboxes each year for Christmas. We normally handle about 500 boxes per season in this ministry.

Bible Study Makes the Difference! Whether its Breakfast at Brookwood, Sunday School Small Groups, Wednesday morning Worship, Sunday night Bible Study or Sunday morning Worship, or sitting down in your quiet place in the morning with a cup of coffee and the Word of God, Bible Study does, without a doubt, make the difference. Senior Adult Ministries provide many opportunities to get into the Word, including a Women s Bible Study on Tuesday mornings. Never miss out on studying the Word of God.

The Month of Love Valentines Day is a time to celebrate with friends and family and to share with others. Singing Love Songs at the Valentines Banquet brings great enjoyment and sweet memories. We share that love at Catawba Valley Medical Center by delivering red carnations throughout the hospital to patients and staff alike. We discovered that we ve been doing that for over 20 years.

The Billy Graham Library Tour 2018 was the year that we lost America s pastor, Billy Graham. Our March trip was postponed until mid-may because of Billy s death and service. The impact of this place was only heightened by his absence as we met Bessie the cow who introduced Billy s life on the farm and his call to ministry. Two and a half hours later, we were blessed, encouraged, and overwhelmed as we had walked through the entire life and ministry of this great man. Many in this group could recall being a part of crusades and events through the years.

Baptist Children s Home Food RoundUP April brings a challenge from the team at Baptist Children s Home to refill the pantries. Churches from all across the state gather food, paper supplies, water, detergents, toiletries, and a host of things to stock the warehouses that meet the needs of children in their care. Woodlawn is a collection point for the Catawba Valley Assoc. and we take a group to Mills Home, Thomasville with the supplies sometime in May. In addition to unloading, we get to tour the warehouse and see how it is all put together. One other thing, don t forget the padlock keys to the trailer!

Breakfast at Brookwood One of the favorite times for the Navigators is the every other month breakfast meeting at Brookwood Café in Maiden. A time to fellowship around the table, Catch up on how folks are doing, Good food, Good fellowship And a time of devotion and Bible teaching. Getting to know people is a significant part of ministry. As different members share a devotion or a story, the Navigators get to know those people more intimately. Their past, their passions, the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. It is encouraging It is relaxing It is fun!

Liberty Mountain Kings Mountain, North Carolina The Joy Theater in Kings Mountain has become almost a tradition for our folks over the past five years, as we head out for dinner at one of the local restaurants and then travel back in time to the 1700 s in the midst of the Revolutionary War to experience first hand the Battle of Kings Mountain. Only an hour long battle in the wooded mountainous territory to the west of Gaston County, the Kings Mountain battle was the turning point of the Revolution. Brought to life by Bob Inman (top right) and Caleb Sigmon, it is a powerful presentation. And, of course, the evening is only complete with a stop at Tony s Ice Cream in Gastonia!

Church-wide Home made Ice Cream Fellowship There is nothing that will bring the family together faster than digging out the ice cream churn and mixing up some home made ice cream. It works the same way for the church family, too! A few more turns of the crank (electric of course!) on a few more ice cream freezers, and everyone gathers for the fun and the fellowship, sitting around eating a variety of flavors of ice cream.

Pinecrest, 29th Avenue, Hickory Pinecrest was just one of MANY concerts presented by the Grand Choirs during the spring season of 2018. Here, we were seated in the three story atrium waiting for everyone to gather, while Pastor Jerry filled the community with music from the piano. The Combined Choirs of Woodlawn and Alexis presented 12 concerts from March 1st to May 24th, including nursing and retirement homes from Mt. Holly to Kings Mountain. In addition, they presented both a morning opening program and an afternoon concert for the North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministry s AAIM Conference held at Rich Fork Baptist Church in Thomasville in May. You will see photos in other parts of this calendar from the December 2017 Concert at the Billy Graham Library. Our other December blessing is to sing at Woodlawn Haven in Mt Holly for the residents there who seldom see visiting groups.

Baptist Children s Homes, Thomasville The Baptist Children s Home Food Drive in April of 2018 not only produced a tremendous amount of food to be delivered from across the Unifour area, but also brought together all generations to travel with the collection to Thomasville and unload in the warehouse. A great part of that day was learning some of the history of the oldest Children s Home in North Carolina. The museum on the Mills Home campus in Thomasville traces the Children s Home from being an orphanage, supported by the surrounding farmland, to the life and ministry that it has today all across the state. The kids (and Julie!) got to check out the old timey school desks and many of the other things that were used throughout the years, including a printing press, a dental chair and tools they used, and the bell from the campus church, while Bobby engaged some of our folks in conversation on the front porch.
