MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Time passes so quickly, it is difficult to believe that we are ready for our summer break. We have had successful programs each month and May was not an exception. Mary Terrell and Pat Hochstetler coordinated an inspiring May Friendship Celebration with the active participation of Judy Skaggs, Bobbie Sanders, Carolyn Thompson, Arlene Youngblood, Carolyn Wilson, Bretna Hackert, Brenda Johnson, O. R. Schmidt; and Susie Tacchi. Our CWU Academy Award winning actresses, Sharon Hudspeth-Holmes, Shirley Washington, and Bettie Mann deserve accolades for their portrayal of Susie, Carol, and Connie in the skit, Become Like Children Really? May Friendship Day focused on Kindling New Fires of Love and how we might extend loving hands and hearts to address the need of children in our community and the world. The highlight of the program was recognition of Vernell Moncure as recipient of the Valiant Woman Award. Vernell has served CWU in many capacities and is immediate past president of CWU in Austin. Learn more about Vernell in this issue of our CWU newsletter. Elizabeth Sanders, Dorothy Kraemer, and President Johnnie Overton were delighted to make this presentation. The word Thanks is always in order, but often seems to not be enough to express our appreciation to those who support us; but when it comes from the heart, it comes with blessings. So, we thank the Reverend Matt Gaventa, pastor at University Presbyterian Church, the women at UPC, and each of you for your presence. Looking Ahead I encourage each of you to attend: Wellspring Bible Study: Friday June 2, when Danita Nelson will present the lesson. Jail Ministry: Monday June 5, 2017 Young Church Women Award: September 1, 2017 CWU State Assembly: September 8 10, 2017 Enjoy your summer break!!! Love, Peace, and Hope, Johnnie Overton, President Congratulations to Vernell Moncure 2017 Valiant Woman Vernell has been an active member of Crestview United Methodist Church for 50 years and has served in many leadership positions. These positions include: Church Conference Delegate, Church Council Secretary, Lay Speaker, local president of United Methodist Women, and currently serves as treasurer. It is significant to note that she taught elementary Sunday School for 15 years. Vernell s roots in the United Methodist Women Montopolis Friendship Community Center grow deep. Over 40 years ago she began an Annual Bazaar Fundraiser to help fund different mission projects. Today, the bazaar continues to be an annual event and she volunteers each month in the clothing room and serves on the Board. On the District level, she served as president of United Methodist Women for five years and is presently serving in another two-year district position. Her work experience includes: Secretary of Crestview UMC Church Council, Church secretary at Faith Lutheran Church, Reading Tutor at Dessau Elementary School, and after 20 years at IBM, she retired to follow a strong call to do mission work. Vernell served as president of Church Women United in Austin from 2015- Photo, courtesy of Jack Moncure 2016 and continues to serve on the board today. Our Valiant Woman is a very dedicated and respected member of Church Women United. She has many talents and gifts and freely shares them to fulfill her call to Mission and Servant Ministry. On a personal level, Vernell is the mother of two, grandmother of four boys and one girl, and great grandmother of five beautiful girls. In September, she will celebrate 50 years of marriage to her husband, Jack, and they have planned to celebrate by taking a trip to Europe. Page 2 of 11

We thank everyone who contributed to making the May Friendship Day: "Kindling New Fires of Love, Peace and Hope," so inspirational. We thank the ladies at University Presbyterian Church for their very warm and gracious hospitality. A big shout-out and thank-you to SaNaya White for the beautifully crafted Friendship Bracelets given to everyone at the CWU-Austin May Friendship Day gathering. CWU- Austin received a hearty thank you from Micah 6 (University Presbyterian Church) for the food donations given as our May Charitable Project. Kind words of thankfulness were sent and expressed from Megan Byrne of Refugee Services of Texas to CWU-Austin, for our donations given to them in April. Dorothy Kraemer Ecumenical Development Committee Chair If you know of a Church Women United member who passed during 2015, 2016 or 2017, please notify our State Area 6 Coordinator Elizabeth Sanders (shalom_nana@yahoo.com), and President Johnnie Overton (johnnieoverston@grandecom.net). Names are needed for the September State meeting for Church Women United. NAME BADGE: GETTING TO KNOW YOU We want to know who you are so, we are asking you to wear your name tag to each meeting. Be creative and design your own. WHY? You will love it and so will we. You will get to know your SISTERS IN CHRIST and you can call them by name. It will open the door to many new friendships. DO YOU NEED A RIDE? To assist members who may need transportation, individual churches are asked to provide transportation for CWU members in their congregation. Each church selects a contact person to receive requests for transportation from those requesting transportation. Once these requests are received, the church contact person will make carpooling suggestions based on the geographical locations of the driver/rider. The church contact person is not expected to provide the transportation, unless she chooses to help in that way. The driver(s) and rider(s) need to make arrangements for carpooling to the meeting.
