FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CALLED BY GOD Today s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God destined us for adoption (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God s living word. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Amos said, The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people (Amos 7:12-15). Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-14 [3-10]). Gospel Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13). 2019 ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK OPENS TUESDAY, JULY 24 th, FROM 9-3:00 PM The 2019 Mass Book will open Tuesday, July 24 th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for those ACTIVE, REGISTERED PARISHIONERS wishing to arrange Announced Masses for next year. HEARTFELT THANK YOU FROM FATHER OWEN KUDUMBA AND THE CARMELITE FRIARS FROM ZIMBABWE On behalf of the Carmelite Friars from Zimbabwe, Father Owen would like to thank us for our warm welcome and our generosity and prayers for the work of the Missions in Zimbabwe. Father said he found a warm and welcoming Parish family with giving, gracious, and caring parishioners. A wonderful example of God s love and compassion. Rest assured of the remembrances and prayers of the people they serve. We collected $4265 last week in our Special Collection for the Carmelite Friars. PLEASE NOTE AIR CONDITIONING SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND, JULY 14-15 There have been a few unexpected, rather expensive repairs recently made to the air conditioning system in our Church. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL FEAST DAY JULY 16 Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a title given to Mary as Patroness of the Carmelite religious community of contemplative Monks, Priests, and Nuns. Some of our most beloved Saints are Carmelites St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower. Even our own Father Abraham is a member of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate! The Carmelites consider the Blessed Virgin Mary to be a perfect model of the interior life of prayer and contemplation to which Carmelites aspire, as well as, a model of virtue, in the person who was closest in life to Jesus Christ. The Carmelites look to the Virgin Mary as a Spiritual Mother. She is seen as the one who points Christians most surely to Christ. As she says to the servants at the Wedding at Cana, Do whatever He tells you. Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, OCD, a revered authority on Carmelite spirituality, wrote that the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel means Our Lady wants us to resemble her not only in our outward vesture, but, far more, in heart and spirit. If we gaze into Mary s soul, we shall see that grace in her has flowered into a spiritual life of incalculable wealth a life of recollection, prayer, uninterrupted oblation to God, continual contact, and intimate union with Him. The Carmelites celebrated a special feast on July 16 th to mark the day in 1251 in which a vision of Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock and she gave him the brown scapular. The scapular comes from a two-sided apron that monks wear while they work. In the vision, Mary handed Simon a scapular and told him that she would always protect whoever wore it. Throughout the ages, the Queen of Carmel has always kept a faithful watch over the destinies of her cherished children on earth. For over 700 years, the brown scapular has been one of the most precious gifts of our Church. Many people wear a small version of the scapular under their shirts, which looks like two brown, square pieces of cloth that hang on the breast and back, connected by strings around one s neck. It is worn as a devotional practice as a way to call to mind Mary s motherly protection, and to ask for her prayerful assistance. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance a call that Mary models in a most wonderful way. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED MOTHER OF MOUNT CARMEL O most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. Amen. DOMINICAN SISTERS OF BLAUVELT SELLING RAFFLE TICKETS JULY 21-22 Sisters will be here to sell chances the weekend of July 21-22. First Prize is $3,000, 2 nd Prize is $1,500 and 3 rd Prize is $500. A great sign appeared in Heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Revelation 12:1) The Miraculous Medal is a beautiful symbol of faith and devotion. Our Lady promises blessings and we should wear, share, and cherish the incredible gift of the Miraculous Medal. SAINT CATHERINE LABOURÉ AND THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL At 11:30 PM on July 18 th, 1830, Sister Catherine Labouré was asleep in her room at the Convent of the Sisters of Charity in Paris when she heard a voice speaking to her. She woke to see a little boy with blue eyes and golden hair whom she believed to be her guardian angel. He led her to the Chapel, where The Blessed Mother appeared and sat in a chair near the altar. She was wearing a white dress with a blue veil. Catherine ran to Mary and knelt before her. Catherine, whose mother had died when she was nine years old, impulsively placed her hands upon the silk-robed knees of her Heavenly Mother. That contact was unforgettable. I am sure that it was the happiest moment of my life, she later wrote. She rested her hands in Mary s lap and looked up into her eyes as she listened to her speak. The Blessed Mother told Catherine that God had a special job for her. This was the first of three apparitions which would ultimately lead, with specific instructions by Mary, to the making of the Miraculous Medal. On the front of the Miraculous Medal, Mary stands on a globe, which represents the earth; a serpent is crushed beneath her feet. This image shows Mary in her role as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The serpent represents Satan, who was defeated by Mary s obedience to God, which gave us our Savior. The rays coming from her hands symbolize the graces Mary gives to those who ask her for them. The following words encircle the medal, O Mary, Conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. On the back of the Miraculous Medal is a cross and the letter M. The cross represents Christ s sacrifice for our salvation, while the bar under the cross stands for the earth. The M stands for Mary and her true devotion both to Jesus and to her children on earth. The two hearts are the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Sorrowful Heart of Mary. The image is surrounded by twelve stars. The stars represent both the twelve Apostles and the verse from the Book of Revelation: (please continue ) The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of July 15 In Loving Memory of Peter O Brien From Susan O Brien & Family For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.
