Jesus isn't lounging in heaven. He is building his church.

Transcription:

Blake Jennings Grace Bible Church - Southwood The King's Commission Matthew 28 William Barclay said, There are two great days in a person's life - the day we are born and the day we discover why. Discover the why as we study the last words of Jesus. Senior year at A&M got summer job at engineering company to help design hybrid electric bus - the day I started work, my boss started a 2-week vacation - he was unreachable people still took vacations back then no cell phone or email! - that was a problem because he left me no instructions other than, Keep working on the bus - I had to guess what to do unfortunately, I guessed wrong! - spent the 2 weeks totally redesigning the suspension to make it much better in every way - I was really excited for him to get back so I could show him my designs - looks at my design and yells at me o he was furious! o turns out we had no budget to redesign suspension but how was I supposed to know that? o I m not clairvoyant and he left me no direction - I was ready to quit my job I was so frustrated I learned: Frustration is inevitable when you have no direction - Whether school, work, or life - you will end up frustrated and discouraged if you don t know what you re supposed to do Henry David Thoreau put it eloquently, The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation - Yes! I have seen it and grieved over it - The majority of this world drifts through school, career, and life without purpose or direction chasing meaningless, fleeting things like money or pleasure Jesus does not want that for you! - He did not leave you here to guess what you ought to be doing like my old boss did - He left us with clear directions to guide our lives so they have enduring meaning / purpose - If you follow Jesus marching order you never have to live a life of quiet desperation! So let me share Jesus marching orders with you His final command before ascending to heaven We have 3 versions of Jesus final command one in Matthew, one in Luke, one in Acts - All 3 share same basic idea but each gives a unique piece The GOAL from Matthew 28:18-20 - Read Matthew 28:18-20 - This is our JOB DESCRIPTION in summary form - So to be clear: your job in life is NOT to go to college, get a job, buy a house, raise a family o all good things, but not why God put you on earth. o Paul no college; Amy Carmichal never married; John Calvin no children o Yet all 3 were instrumental in establishing God s kingdom on earth - NOT: go to church, worship God, study the Bible o very good things but not why we re here on earth

o we can do all these better in heaven o so if that was our purpose, God would just take us home now - Our job in life = MAKE DISCIPLES OF JESUS - But what is a disciple? o common word in the Greek world = a learner or student o but not how we think of a student NOT: go to class for an hour receive instruction then get on with your life = a whole-life commitment a disciple submitted to the teacher as master - We are called to be disciples of Jesus He s the Master o Matthew, Peter, Paul not making disciples of themselves... making disciples of Jesus o Same for us I don t want disciples of Blake! o Don t follow me follow Jesus the ONLY person worth giving your life to - So a disciple = a fully-committed follower of Jesus o That commitment is symbolized by baptism in water baptism is your public declaration that you give your life to Jesus and will follow Him o But that s just the beginning of discipleship. It s a lifelong process of learning to obey all that Jesus commanded becoming faithful to Jesus in every area of life. - Now let s be clear this is really important: a disciple is NOT the same thing as a Christian o You become a Christian simply through faith you believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead and you receive eternal life as a free gift. You become a child of God by faith alone. Salvation is by faith alone nothing else is required to become a Christian o BUT to become a DISCIPLE of Jesus that does require more than just faith o It requires obedience to all He taught - As I ve said before: God s goal for your life is NOT to get you to heaven o that s too small for God o He does want heaven for you but He also wants something so much more He wants you to be a disciple who is growing more and more like Jesus so you can represent Jesus in this world. o He wants you to grow as a disciple of Jesus so that you can then go out and make more disciples of Jesus teaching them and training them to follow Jesus just like you. - That is God s goal for your life to make disciples of Jesus o Not to live the American dream the big house with white picket fences, 2.5 kids, a dog, a stable job, a happy life none of that is God s purpose for your life that s all way too small and way too fleeting for God. o He put you here on earth to do something that will matter for eternity that will build His kingdom and push back the gates of hell itself He put you here to make disciples of Jesus Christ. - William Barclay said There are two great days in a person's life - the day we are born and the day we discover why - Now you know why! You were put on earth to make disciples of Jesus - And that begins with a message turn to the end of Luke The MESSAGE from Luke 24:46-48 - Read Luke 24:46-48 - Jesus gives us a MESSAGE to PROCLAIM to all nations - That message = that Christ died and rose so all who repent would be forgiven o = the GOSPEL o Jesus is the Christ = the One God sent o He died for us and rose from the dead to make forgiveness possible His sacrificial death is HOW God can wash away sin and make us His children o All we must do is repent

o Now what does it mean to repent? Very simply repent means turn around and what you re turning from and turning towards is always defined in the context Here it s about sin and Jesus You had a wrong view of sin you saw it as excusable as no big deal. Sure you ve done some wrong things, but you ve done a lot of good things and you re not nearly as bad as a lot of other people, so why would you need forgiveness from God? That s what most of our society believes. They also have a wrong view of Jesus. Yeah, He s a nice guy. Maybe a prophet. Maybe a radical. Maybe a great man. But that s all not the Son of God who died for our sins and rose from the dead. Jesus says you must repent from that wrong view of sin and of Him. You must believe that your sin is not excusable that it is a big deal. You must believe you need forgiveness from God. And you must believe that Jesus is not just a good man He is the Son of God who died for your sins and rose from the dead to save you from your sin and give you eternal life. o When you believe that you are a sinner who needs a Savior and that Jesus is that Savior who died and rose for you that s the repentance Jesus is talking about and in that instant of belief your sins are washed away and you become a child of God. You are saved. - Once you ve trusted in Jesus, you become His WITNESS o = one who testifies to the truth of something o Used in the 1 st century of witnesses in court you testify to truth of an event o We testify to the FACT that Jesus the Messiah died & rose again to save us from our sins - Now we haven t yet seen Jesus with our own eyes like the Apostles had, but we have witnessed His POWER and LOVE at work in our lives o We have seen what He s done in us and in our church and in one another o How He as delivered us from guilt, given us hope, and made us part of His family o We are called to WITNESS to the world about what Jesus has done for us - You are commanded by Jesus to testify to world that He died & rose again so we can be forgiven & have eternal life o That s the message that gives birth to disciples of Jesus it s the beginning of making a disciple they hear and believe this good news. - So we re called to testify to the truth of this message AND to back it up by the way we live o read John 13:35 o The greatest evidence you can give for the truth of the gospel is the love you have for others. When you sacrifice to help other people the world takes notice. o Your love for others is what gives you the platform to share the gospel you earn the right to talk about Jesus by acting like Jesus loving others just as He has loved us. - So we are here on earth to make disciples of Jesus and that begins by believing and sharing the good news of the gospel and backing it up with the love of Christ. - But man that is hard to do! o It s scary to share the gospel with people who don t believe in Jesus what if they re hostile or offended? o And it s hard to love them as Christ commanded. Love is, by definition, a sacrifice. I don t know about you, but I find sacrifice to be hard and painful and I don t like it! - So Jesus has called us to this hard and costly life but He hasn t left us alone in it The POWER from Acts 1:8 - Read Acts 1:8 - My boss went away for 2 weeks and when he was gone he was gone! Totally gone. Unreachable. Unable to help. I was truly on my own.

- Jesus is not that kind of boss! He will never leave us alone. He will never abandon us. - Exactly the opposite! He has sent His own Spirit the Holy Spirit to live inside of us to be our closest companion and our constant source of help to make it through this life. - Holy Spirit gives supernatural strength to say what we can t say & do what we can t do o Acts 4 Peter arrested and brought before the same council that condemned Jesus o Luke tells us that, filled with the Holy Spirit he said to them and then Peter gives a powerful and convicting testimony about Jesus o The Spirit gave Peter boldness and clarity to testify about Jesus - And He ll do the same for us He will give you the courage and clarity to share the gospel powerfully with your neighbors, classmates, coworkers with anyone - And not only will He help you share the message of Jesus He ll help you share the love of Jesus that will prove the message is true o Gal 5 Paul tells us that the fruit of the Spirit in your life is LOVE, joy, peace, patience and so on. He will produce the love that He requires in you! - Jesus hasn t left you alone in this life. o Remember Mt 28 I am with you always, even to the end of the age o He is always with you and His Spirit is always in you! - So pray for The Spirit s courage, clarity, and love every day o Pray that He would give you the POWER to be the WITNESS Jesus has commanded you to be so that you can make DISCIPLES for Jesus - And where are we to make these disciples? All 3 passages tell us The PLACE from all 3: everywhere - all the nations all the nations Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, remotest part of the earth - If you see something repeated in the Bible, then it s important. - Jesus repeated the geographical extent of His command in all 3 passages so it s very important. He wants us to share the gospel and make disciples everywhere on earth. - Now when we think about that command, there are 2 common errors we must avoid: - 1) Don t forget the nations o In Rev 5 we re given a glimpse into the future when this age has come to an end and the entire church is in heaven worshipping Jesus. We re told that there are disciples of Jesus from every tribe, tongue, and nation there. o Every tribe, tongue, and nation Jesus has called us to reach all of them with the Gospel so that there will be disciples from all of them on that great day. o He even tells us in Mt 24 that He s not coming back until we, the church, have finished that job and actually reached every nation on earth with the Gospel. o So how are we doing in that task? Here s a video to answer that question What is a UPG? by Global Frontier Missions https://vimeo.com/128750127 o 7000 people groups unreached; 3000 of those with no witness for Jesus at all. We have work to do! o We prayed for many of you going this summer or next year. o I hope that inspired more of you to go next summer o I do believe that EVERY Christian should spend at least one summer of life overseas sharing the gospel with an unreached or under-reached people group. o I also believe that every Christian should be actively involved in supporting those who go to the nations praying for them and financially supporting them. That s not an option. That s our job here on earth. We are required to do this. o To get started or learn more, email GlobalOutreach@grace-bible.org

- 2) Don t forget home where we are right now! o go and make disciples might mean go to Africa and make disciples o or it might mean go across the street and get to know your neighbors and help them grow as disciples of Jesus! o There s no distance defined for the word go it could be 15000 miles it could be 15 feet. o Go is not about distance it s about initiative you take the initiative to connect with another person to share the love of Jesus with them in word and deed. o So, I m going to introduce some language this morning that I plan to repeat often in the months ahead. So long as we re here in this place, the Great Commission commands us to Invest in people where we LIVE, WORK, and PLAY Invest in their lives to move them closer to Jesus If they re not yet believers you re sharing the gospel If they are believers you re teaching them to follow Jesus o You re investing where you: o LIVE that s your neighborhood, your apartment complex, or your dorm includes your family and your neighbors Summer is a great time to meet your neighbors! 3x3 grid the houses or apartments that surround yours Here s my challenge to you: this summer get to the names of each person or family in the 8 boxes around you and get to know one prayer request for each of them. Build that friendship. Show them that you care about them. Find out how you can pray for them or help them. That s how you invest where you live. o WORK or STUDY if you re still in school God has placed you in a job or a class where you can meet people and share Jesus with them. In fact, you may be the only glimpse of Jesus they get! I remember when I was an engineer grab lunch with my coworkers it was the most important part of the day because for a brief moment we d stop talking about bearings and springs now don t get me wrong I love bearings and springs! but I love talking about Jesus more. And lunch was just this magical time when you could talk about family, or life, or hopes, or frustrations. And while it didn t always lead to spiritual conversations it did from time to time and I got to share Jesus with guys who might otherwise never have heard. You can do that. I wasn t a pastor back then! I was just a regular guy! But God challenged me to think about my office as my Jerusalem, and the lunch table as my ministry. o PLAY Most of you know I m a car guy. I love sports cars love building them, fixing them, and especially racing them. For the longest time in life I thought God wanted me to sacrifice that hobby. I must choose between cars or church good Christians choose church and don t have hobbies. Going through deep depression has a way of making you reevaluate your assumptions of life. I was wrong. A hobby is a gift from God that refreshes the soul and brings peace and most important of all gives you an open door into the lives of people who don t know Jesus. Most of the guys I meet at the track don t know Jesus. But I get to spend the whole weekend with them. In the evening, I grill for them. And, sure, most of what we talk about is cars and driving. But invariably over lunch, or at the end of the day, or over a beer we start to talk about more meaningful things. And I ve seen God open these doors

for me to suddenly be a witness and a friend to men and women who would probably never want to walk into our church. God has given you hobbies and passions to rest and refresh your soul they are good but He wants you to use them to reach men and women for Christ who are never otherwise going to walk into Grace Bible Church. So, I may be the first pastor to ever say this to you: It s ok to skip church for a hobby not every week but from time to time. In fact, some of you may need to come to church less often so you can spend more time engaging the people of this world who don t yet know Jesus. They re not here! They re out at the track, at a game, in a park, at brunch, they re out there. Get to know them. Invest in their lives. Raise up disciples of Jesus. That is why you are here on earth. - We have an opportunity for you to put this into practice next month: Grace for the City - Wherever you are, wherever you go, to every nation
