(The Apostles Creed) When someone asks you what you believe as a Christian, what do you say? Too often, we end up in guilty silence because we really don t know. The good news is that we don t have to struggle for an answer out of our own personal reflections. For almost 2000 years, Christians have summarized our most important beliefs in the Apostles Creed. We still say the Apostles Creed together in Sunday worship throughout each year. It s a wonderful, short summary of our Christian beliefs. Many of us have it memorized. If you don t yet, now would be a good time. As I like to remind us, to say I believe is to say I place my faith in The creed is of course about what we believe. But even more important, it helps us to better identify and know the God in Whom we believe. The creed began as an expansion on Jesus Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 when he commanded us to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Gradually, different churches added important phrases that would help new Christians both to place their faith in this triune God, and to know our core Christian beliefs. You may have noticed that whenever we have a baptism, we say the creed in a question/answer format. That s to remind us that the faith we affirm in the creed is the faith of our baptism, through which the triune God has claimed and called us by the Holy Spirit to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ. January and February are the church season of Epiphany. In this season Christians focus on what it means for God to have appeared decisively in our world in Jesus Christ: the Son of God and the Light of the world. In keeping with our church mission statement, in Epiphany we concentrate on how empowered by the Holy Spirit we can share God s light and love in Christ with others. Before we can do this, it s important to learn more clearly what and in Whom we believe as Christians. That gives us more confidence and clarity as we talk about the reality of God. As we come to understand each phrase of the Apostles Creed more deeply, it can be a great tool for helping us to share God s love with those around us who need it so much. This winter, beginning January 4, let s commit to growing in faith together as we come to better know the God in whom we place our faith, through these familiar words. (See page 10 to read the entire creed.) Phil

Children s Ministry is from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. each Sunday in the Knox building. Preschool (ages 3 and 4 years) Bible stories, songs and play from the DWELL Play series. This group meets in Knox 203. Kindergarten Bible stories, activities and fun from the Spark! curriculum from Sparkhouse. This group meets in Knox 202. FIRST FELLOWSHIP: LIFE GETS BETTER We live in a time in history where being younger is seen as better and late life is something to deny or dread. But there are academic researchers and authors interested in late life emotional development who maintain that life does get better with age. Dr. Carol Gaetjens will elaborate on personal growth that continues into old age at First Fellowship at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 8, at the Butterfield Village Trail Lodge. Her lecture will be based on Wendy Lustbader s book Life Does Get Better (2011). Dr. Gaetjens holds a Ph.D in human development and social policy from Northwestern University and an MSW in clinical social work from the University of Illinois. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in gerontology and maintained a private practice before retiring and moving to Arkansas in 2010. THE APOSTLES CREED Janet Clausen Clerk of Session I know that when I go to the dentist or eye doctor and I am going to have a practitioner looking into my mouth or eyes, I want to know what they are doing. I want to know what every tool of the trade is going to do and even as an adult, is it going to be uncomfortable? For any new procedure, I ask for a running dialogue of what they are doing. It is only after I become accustomed to the procedure, after many visits, that I stop asking so many questions. Children are the same way. They need to know what is going on. So often, we get going and forget they have only experienced something once or twice. This is the case in all areas of their lives, not the least in worship. At church, children may have only experienced a baptism or communion a couple times. Even the things we do every Sunday have not become extremely familiar and the small changes in how we worship may seem bigger to them. As we approach Sunday mornings with our children, I want to emphasize the importance of Saturday. We can take time on Saturday, or another day earlier in the week, to talk to children about what will happen at church on Sunday morning, from Sunday School, to courtyard time, to time in worship. Use the Friday email to highlight any special parts of the morning, and then just talk in general about how the day will go and what everyone s expectations are. You name your expectations and let them name theirs. It is so important to talk about what is going to happen. I encourage you to make a habit of Saturday talk in your family this year. YOUTH MINISTRY TEAMS ARE FORMING!!! We are looking for several teams of adults to enhance the transition in our youth leadership. The best model for youth ministry is one that has a number of adults who work hands-on with our youth. We are hoping for 8-12 new adults to join in the youth ministry program. These adults will work alongside the youth ministry subcommittee and directly support the current youth director (Kristi Button) and the future youth director in the Sunday afternoon programming. EACH team member should expect a once-a-month commitment to the program. In teams, you will plan ahead several times a year and commit to being with the youth one Sunday evening a month. The group meets most Sundays from 5:00-7:00pm with dinner included. The youth of this congregation are amazing!! Join a team and you will be a blessing as you are blessed by time spent with them. If childcare for your children is needed, it will be arranged. Your own children will likely be enriched by closer connections with the youth. Dear FUPC Family, A LETTER FROM PARISH ASSOCIATE LESLIE BELDEN There are many who have asked me why FUPC spends so much time, energy, and financial resources on our ministry to the rural people of Honduras. After all, urban Honduras where we fly in and out is dangerous, and there are plenty of needs here in NWA or other parts of the USA. The simple answer is because the need in rural Honduras is greater than you can imagine, and all of God s children are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and God s injunction to us as the Body of Christ (the Church) is to serve the least of these. And believe me, people living in third world countries are the least. But the more complex answer is that in many ways our affluence in the USA is one of the causes of the problems in Honduras. The poverty is so severe, and the danger in moving to cities in Honduras for jobs is so real, that men and whole families attempt to come to the USA for hope. One of the goals of our ministry in Honduras is to create opportunities for a better life for people where they live, so that through their faith and working together with partners in the USA they can have safe water, decent housing, and build capacity for the future through education. Because NWA is so significantly affected by immigration, and because Rev. Phil Butin and I were awaked to the heartbreaking effect of illegal immigration on families and church community the last time we were in Honduras, I am committed to learning more about immigration issues. I will be taking part in a PCUSA work/study trip January 23-February 1, titled Voices on the Border and Beyond. The studying has already begun, with recommended readings that I can share with others at FUPC who may be interested. I will fly to Tuscon, Arizona, and will be transported to a PCUSA ministry, Frontera de Cristo (http://fronteradecristo.org), in the sister-cities of Agua Prieta, Sonora, and Douglas, Arizona, on the Mexican border. From there the group will travel through Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, learning more about the complexity of immigration issues. Please be in prayer for me and the other members of the fifteen-member delegation. Pray not only for safe travels, but also for the Holy Spirit to surround us as we learn more about sharing life and ministry across political, cultural, religious, economic, and social borders. I hope to share what I see and learn with the whole FUPC family when I return, and I will keep you in my prayers, and carry your good thoughts with me, while I travel. In many ways, through God s love and the power of the Holy Spirit, all of you will travel with me! Our hope is that we will have enough writers from within our congregation to post two devotional writings each week in the six weeks of Lent and to have a daily posting from Palm Sunday to Easter (Holy Week). We will follow the Daily Lectionary from the PC(USA) website for these reflections. Submissions should be between 300-350 words and conclude with a brief, written prayer. The writer s name will be posted with the devotional. A sign-up sheet will be in the narthex beginning January 4.
