FIrst Day of School FamIly DevotIonal Read: Proverbs 3:3-6 (ESV) Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. DIscuss: What do you think this passage is telling us about how much God loves us? He gives us steadfast love and faithfulness. What does steadfast mean? Look it up in the dictionary if you don t know. Wow! What a big promise it is that God s love is steadfast and faithful. As we start a new school year, we can remember that God s love is always with us and that he is always faithful to us. This passage also reminds us to trust the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. What do you think that means? Why do you think it s easier for us sometimes to trust ourselves instead of God? (Parents, this could be a great time to share your own experiences with trusting God. Modeling your faith with all of its doubts, struggles, and joys is important to help your kids see what life with God is like!) Reading the second part of this passage, it s helpful to remember the first part. We know that we can trust the Lord with all our hearts because he is steadfast and faithful! God doesn t just ask us to blindly trust him, but he has shown us how much he loves us and how faithful he will be to us through our own stories and the stories of the people in the Bible. That makes it easier to trust him! Pray: Let s pray together as a family, asking God to help us remember his steadfast love and faithfulness, and to help us trust in him this new school year! Are there any specific things we can pray for as a family for the beginning of school? Tip! Read the passage from Proverbs again, but as a prayer this time: Thank you, God, for your steadfast love and faithfulness. We want to remember them so closely, like they are tied around our neck like a necklace and written on our hearts like words on a piece of paper. We trust you and trust that by remembering your promise of love and faithfulness, we will find favor in your eyes. Help us to trust you with all of our hearts and to not turn to our own understanding and desire to control. Help us to acknowledge you in everything we do! Amen.
