Why Am I Here? Introduction 1. Many people have asked themselves this question, while others have never given it much thought. 2. Someone may be convinced that he is here quite by accident. He may think of himself as no more than a biological product. A. There are indeed thousands of people who are born as unplanned children, some as unwanted children, and some are left to the mercy of society. 3. Regardless of how we came to be here, the fact is that we are here, and we need to think on why God has granted life. 4. Rather than dwell on the circumstances surrounding birth, we really need to focus on the true meaning of life. Life Is More Than Physical Existence 1. There is much more to our being here than mere physical existence. 2. Man is a biological creature, but of far greater importance, he is made in the very image of God. Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Why Am I Here? 1

3. Man possesses a soul that is not mortal. Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. A. While our bodies come from our fleshly parents, the soul or spirit comes from God. Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it. 4. Whether our parents wanted us or not, the heavenly Father wants our lives to be devoted to His service. A. Whether our parents loved us or not, God loves us. B. Whether our parents took any interest in us or not, God is very much interested in us. Measuring Life By Material Possessions 1. It truly is sad that so many people attempt to measure life by material possessions. 2. Success is often gauged by what one has, not by what he is. Luke 12:15 And He said to them, Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. Matthew 16:26 Matthew 6:25 Why Am I Here? 2

God s Plan for Me 1. So, why am I here? What is life all about? A. The Father of spirits has not left us to grope in the dark. B. He has not left us to stumble and wander aimlessly. 1) He has revealed His plan and purpose for us. 2) We just need to open the Scriptures and investigate. Let God speak to us through His divine word. 2. His word clearly teaches that my life should not consist of doing whatever affords me pleasure. A. Or, to act in a selfish way, or in an anti-social manner. 3. The Bible teaches that we are here for a purpose and God has told us what our purpose in life really is. My Purpose in Life 1. We are here to glorify God. A. He sent His Son into this world to die for our sins. John 3:16 B. Through faith in Christ we have access into the grace of God. 1 Corinthians 6:20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. C. Each life brings honor to God or else it brings reproach on His holy and blessed name. Why Am I Here? 3

2. We are here to magnify Christ. Philippians 1:20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. A. A failure to honor the Son is a failure to honor the Father who sent Him. John 5:23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 3. We are here to help other people. Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. Romans 15:1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. A. The faithful must carry the gospel to those who have not been saved. We are taught to have care and concern for others. 4. We are here to prepare for heaven. 1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, A. The Son of God left heaven and lived among men in order that we might enter heaven after finishing our brief span on earth. B. This present life is intended of God to be preparatory for the never-ending life to come. Why Am I Here? 4

Conclusion 1. How terrible it is for one to live out his days on this earth with little or no thought of his responsibility and accountability to God. 2. Why am I here? A. Everyone of us needs to examine this question seriously. B. Every individual needs to face up to the purpose of life as God intended for it to be. 3. Remember; A. Glorify God, magnify Christ, help others, and prepare for heaven! B. This can and will happen when we love the Lord our God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength! Why Am I Here? 5
