Rector s Window Fr. John Broussard God s Grace and Blessings to you all! In an address to pilgrims, his Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI beautifully explained that: When he (Christ) speaks of the cross that we ourselves have to carry, it has nothing to do with a taste for torture or of pedantic moralism. It is the impulse of love, which has its own momentum and does not seek itself but opens the person to the service of truth, justice and the good. Christ shows God to us, and thus the true greatness of man. This is truly the spirit with which the Blessed Mother herself brings people to her Son Jesus. Mary stood at the foot of the cross with her Son, suffering with Him and sharing in His torment through her love as His mother. Often pilgrims visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help carrying heavy crosses, and it is in an encounter with our Lady that those visitors find peace amidst the storm. Soon the Shrine will be celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. The remembrance of Mary s Assumption into heaven holds special significance by all those who participate in the life of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. It is always a day marked with special solemnity as it was also one of Adele Brise s favorite feasts, and when many come to experience the love of Christ through the love of Mary. At the Shrine, Our Blessed Mothers intercession is always known. Mary s life, words, and example all help mold us into an image of her Son. Please join us this August 15 in the celebration of Mary s Assumption. Please join us in our Novena of Masses and prayer in preparation for the celebration of the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin into Heaven this August 15. Your novena requests and intentions will be remembered each day. Please unite with us in prayer during our Assumption novena this year. We deeply appreciate your prayers and support of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help; let us always remember one another in prayer.

Assumption Spotlight What is the Assumption of the Blessed Mother? Addressing a crowd of over 500,000 people packed into St. Peter s Square, Pope Pius XII solemnly defined in Munificentissimus Deus on November 1, 1950 that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Mary s Assumption, as defined by the Catholic Church, recognizes that by the power of Almighty God, Mary was taken up into Heaven body and soul. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to understand more deeply Mary s share in her Son s glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven. In a General Audience, August 16th, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI taught that: By contemplating Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not the definitive homeland for us either, and that if we live with our gaze fixed on eternal goods we will one day share in this same glory and the earth will become more beautiful. Mary is here to guide us to Christ, especially when the cross seems most difficult and her Assumption into Heaven is a constant reminder of the purpose of those sufferings; man is not meant for this life on earth but for glory with God in Heaven. Events Spotlight Spreading the Good News of Our Lady s Message at Champion Across the Globe By Corrie Campbell. Communications Director, Events Coordinator Champion Shrine featured on Megyn Kelly TODAY Show As we approach 2019 and the 160th anniversary of the appearance in 1859 of the Blessed Virgin Mary here on Champion Shrine grounds, The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is garnering both national and international attention as the subject of media reports. In Spring of 2018, the release of Miracles of Champion, the EWTN TV special hosted by Michael O Neill, the Miracle Hunter, brought with it an appearance by O Neill and interview subject Nancy Foytik on the Megyn Kelly TODAY show that aired March 28 during the third hour of the TODAY Show on NBC. Interest in the Shrine from viewers of that program generated more than 8,000 website views in just a few short hours and, since that time, countless inquiries through our website. This publicity, in turn, has resulted in a substantial increase in pilgrimages throughout the summer and fall months to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. Champion Shrine Highlight of Catholic Media Conference In June, 2018, the Diocese of Green Bay, as part of its 150th Anniversary celebration, hosted nearly 500 Catholic media specialists representing print, broadcast and digital media outlets from across the globe. As a highlight of their conference, media reps were invited by the Catholic Press Association to come on pilgrimage to Champion Shrine June 13, where they attended Mass, learned about Shrine history and participated in a traditional Rosary procession. Among those attending were Dr. Natasha Govekar, who was appointed in 2016 by Pope Francis to lead a team of individuals who would reform Vatican news and communications for the digital age. Dr. Govekar s team creates imagery and social communications for the Pope. In an interview with wearegreenbay.com during the conference, Govekar talked about the responsibilities of tweeting for Members of the Catholic Press Association praying the Rosary on the Rosary Walk at Champion Shrine June 13 during the Catholic Media Conference. Photo credit: Corrie Campbell the Pope on Twitter. She said that while others may craft and provide translation of the tweets of Pope Francis on Twitter, the Pope, himself, approves all of his tweets and, in many cases, actually suggests prospective tweets. Govekar went on to say, during her interview, that she enjoyed a beautiful and spirit-filled visit to Green Bay and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help to which she would like to return. When asked if she thought the Pope might ever considering coming to Green Bayarea, Govekar said, Ask him. Shrine Spotlight The First Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help by: Ashley Saxe, Pilgrimage Planning Coordinator According to Shrine archival history, the first official chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help was built by Adele s father, Lambert Brice (also Brise), after Adele saw our Blessed Lady. According to historical accounts, Brice built a small 10 ft. x 12 ft. chapel out of logs to mark the spot of the Apparition. Sr. Pauline LaPlante, who took over St. Mary s Boarding School after Adele s death, wrote about her visits to the little chapel as a child. I remember well the happy moments I spent in the dear little Chapel, Sister Pauline wrote. Praying and singing with good Adele, with only a small picture of the Immaculate Heart of Mary pinned on the wall, that her confessor had given her. The Belgian settlers were known to be very reverent. Roadside chapels were a custom they brought with them when they emigrated to this territory. In Belgium, it was tradition to build a small chapel in remembrance of a departed loved one or to give thanksgiving for an answered prayer or miracle. To the Belgian pioneers, it was also a way to preserve their Catholic faith and catechize their children. The nearest churches were several miles away, which made attending Mass difficult. To solve this problem, most families built these little chapels near their homes. Each contained an altar, holy water, religious pictures and sacred ornaments. After their days work and especially during the month of May, the family gathered together for prayer and devotion. (25, Tlachac) One can still see roadside chapels today on the way to Door County, and it s quite possible that in the early years of her mission, Adele would stop and pray at these little chapels as she made her way up the peninsula. Though they re not used anymore, they stand as a testament to the Belgian people and the lengths to which they went to preserve their Catholic faith and carry it on for future generations. An example of an early Belgian chapel can be found right here on site at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help on the Rosary Walk behind the chapel.
