Why is this important? 2 Timothy 2:14-19 14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness."

Why is this important? 2 Timothy 2:14-19 Be Diligent- Zealous Rightly (Accurately) Dividing the Word of truth: Handling accurately (lit. cutting straight) is a figure that paints a picture of a workman who is careful and accurate in his work. The Greek word (orthotomounta) elsewhere describes a tentmaker who makes straight rather than wavy cuts in his material. It pictures a builder who lays bricks in straight rows and a farmer who plows a straight furrow. -Constable

Why is this important? 2 Timothy 2:14-19 Avoid Worldly and Empty Chatter- 1 Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I was leaving for Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not to spread false teachings, 4 nor to occupy themselves with myths and interminable genealogies. Such things promote useless speculations rather than God s redemptive plan that operates by faith.

Astrological Mythology Horoscopes Astrology Zodiac Superstitions All of these forms of divination find their origin in ancient mythology practiced by the Egyptians and Babylonians and later popularized by Asian cultural practices. The Horoscope is an astrological chart (astrology dealing with the alignment of the sun, moon, planets and stars) that is used a method of divination to predict outcomes related to the various points of time it represents. Zodiac means circle of animals and is used as a calendar that aligns with various astrological event. 2 Corinthians 10:5 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 6 and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.

Additional Gospels Gospel of Thomas: Many people claim the authenticity of errant gospel s however the Gospel of Thomas and others like it are what we call pseudographia meaning false writings. It was common at the time to write under a famous alias in order to gain a larger readership. The Gospel of Thomas was discovered among other Gnostic writings in 1945 and contains heretical information. No early church fathers authenticate this as a true gospel.

Pop Culture Conspiracy The Da vinci Code Da Vinci Code was written by Dan Brown as a fictional novel yet has captured the attention of millions and caused a generation to question biblical authority. The Da Vinci Code suggest that Leonardo da Vinci s 15 th century painting of the last supper was coded by Da Vinci to point to Jesus having been married to Mary Magdalen. One of the premises of the book is that Christianity has long suppressed the equality of a male and female deity. The Da Vinci Code is linked to various errant gospels such as the Gospel of Thomas, Philip and most of Mary whom they believe to have been written my Mary Magdalene. While the book has many historical inaccuracies including the location and time that these other gospels were written. (Remember it is a work of fiction that society deemed to be fact) However, while these works claim to have been written by Thomas and Phillip the writing style, contents, and age of documents date these writings among the 2 nd and 3 rd Century. The Gospel of Mary dates back to mid second century. Mary Magdalene could not have penned this Gospel herself because she would have been deceased over 150 years at the time.

Pan Africanism and Black Theology This movement is based on a false ideology that portrays race and religion as intrinsically connected. As a black lash against imperialism, slavery and systematic racial oppression many have created religious structures to counter Christianity because they believe that Christianity is a white religion. Pan Africanism Black Nationalism Rastafarianism Kemetism/ Egyptian Hieroglyphics Liberation Theology

Pan Africanism and Black Theology Key issues- Centralizing Religion in and around Africa Re-writing man s origin story to in a way to focus on the black race More often than not-exclusivity based on identity (blackgood, white-bad) Lack of historical references or tangible context Taking portions of Christianity and skewing the truth

Pan Africanism and Black Theology Black Hebrew Israelites- the Black Hebrew Israelites consider themselves direct decedents of Israel and maintain that they keep the commandments. Deuteronomy 28:68- A key text from the movement where they claim that Egypt is a metaphor for America and that blacks sold in the transatlantic slave trade are the Israelites spoken of in this text. Typically don t cut their hair An idea of enlightenment (Over-stand) Keep the Sabbath on Saturdays

7 th Day Adventist Holy Spirit Mysticism Prosperity Gospel Scientology: At it core this is Humanism: a way to be your own God, fix your own problems and train your mind and body through dianetics. Christian Scientology- Sickness is an illusion mind body soul connection Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism) Unification Church: South Korean Origins- World Peace World Mission Society Church of God-Korean holy mother Spiritualism- The Universe

Why is this important? 2 Timothy 2:14-19 Despite confusion, turmoil, false doctrine, and the schemes of Satan the Word of God will always stand with his people. 2 Tim 2:19 Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness. John 10:27-28 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

Recognizing a False Gospel John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

What We Believe: The truth about Jesus Jesus is God, the second Person of the Trinity. As God the Son, He has always existed and was never created. (John 1:1-3, 18) As the second person of the Trinity, He is coequal with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. He is fully God and fully man (two natures joined, not mixed). (John 1:1, 14, 18) In becoming a man, He was begotten through the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. (Is. 7:14; Matt. 1:18; Jn. 1:18)

What We Believe: The truth about Jesus Jesus is the only way to the Father, salvation, and eternal life. He died on a cross according to God s plan, as full sacrifice and payment for our sins. (Jn. 1:12, 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:17; Heb. 7:25) He rose from the dead on the third day, spiritually and physically immortal. For the next 40 days he was seen by more than 500 eyewitnesses. His wounds were touched and He ate meals. (Rom. 1:14; 1 Cor. 15:17; 1 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:16) He physically ascended to Heaven. Jesus will come again visibly and physically at the end of the world to establish God s kingdom and judge the world. (Acts 1:11; 1 Tim. 3:16)

Our Historical Foundation Jesus the only one who has every split time in two! Apostles Jewish Apologetics- approximately 90 AD Early Church Fathers (Apostolic Fathers) 1. Polycarp- said to be direct disciple of the Apostle John 2. Eusebius-wrote about Polycarp 3. Papias- also said to have known the Apostle John 4. Ignatius 5. Origin The Catholic Church-Prior to the onset of Roman Catholicism, Catholic Church meant the Universal Church, as in the global body of Christ followers. Roman Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity Split (Eastern Orthodox) Reformation- Roman Catholic Church and Protestant church form ( Martin Luther and John Calvin)

What We Believe: The Apostle s Creed (140/390 A.D.) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy catholic (Universal) Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.
