Life More Abundant Bible Study Bible Prophecy: Daniel Chapter 5 Daniel Chapter 5 chronicles the fall of one of the wealthiest world empires to have existed on earth. More importantly, the chapter affirms God s prophecies for the future, giving assurance that God knows the end from the beginning and His words are true. We should gain immense comfort in knowing that the One omniscient and loving God is in control of world events and has your life in the palm of His hands (Isaiah 49:15, 16). Belshazzar, grandson of Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 27:5-7), held a feast for 1000 of his lords over the course of several nights in 539BC. In arrogance and pride of Babylon s impenetrable walls, the drunken orgy, which spread throughout the entire city, was held despite eminent threats of besiegement by the Medes and Persians. Some historians believe this to be an annual feast held in honor of Babylon s many gods, but also to commemorate the conquest of the Jewish nation. Belshazzar blasphemously called for the use of the articles once hollowed as sacred in earthly worship before the God of heaven (2 Chronicles 36:10, 17-21). 1. Consider that Belshazzar the king, his lords, his wives and concubine [daughters of Babylon] praised the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood and stone while drinking wine from the vessels once consecrated to the God of the Jews, the true God of Creation (verse 3, 4). What may have been their boast in this arrogant and blasphemous act? (Read Isaiah 52:5) The bible says that a hand appeared without a body and began to write an unintelligible message on the wall opposite the king. In utter fear, the king s countenance changed and his knees knocked together (v6) at the supernatural sight (see Jeremiah 50:42, 43). He immediately summoned the astrologers, soothsayers, and wise men of Babylon for the writings' interpretation. 2. Considering neither Daniel nor any of the Hebrew captives were among those called by Belshazzar to interpret the handwriting on the wall. What does that say of this king s failure to learn by example from his grandfather, Nebuchadnezzar, regarding the One who has power to give and interpret visions and dreams? The bible says, that the queen (most likely Belshazzar s mother) reminded him of the gift of interpreting dreams and visions given to Daniel, now approximately 96yrs old, and suggested he be summoned (v8-12).

3. Consider the arrogant and condescending words spoken by Belshazzar to Daniel (v13). Describe the kings words in your own words. 4. When offered great gifts and rewards for providing the interpretation of the writing on the wall, Daniel refuses and suggests the gifts be given to another. What principles of prophecy and prophets does this act uphold? (Consult the study The Purpose of Bible Prophecy for more details) Notice that Daniel reminds Belshazzar of his grandfather s former arrogance and God s humbling him. Failing to heed the example of his grandfather, Daniel then interprets the sentence pronounced upon Belshazzar. 5. Who does Daniel identify as the sender of the finger which wrote on the wall? 6. What is the interpretation of the following numbers? Mene = 50 shekels = 1000 Gerahs (Exodus 30:13) Mene = 50 shekels = 1000 Gerahs Tekel (Shekel) = 1 shekel = 20 Gerahs Peres = 25 shekels = 500 Gerahs SUM = 126 shekels = 2520 Gerahs 7. Based on our study of Daniel Chapter 4, What is the fate pronounced upon the Babylonian Empire? Consider the term "seven times". Let us see how the bible foretells the fall of Babylon in detail. Let us read Isaiah 45:1-6 and 21:1-4. Consider that the prophet Isaiah, who calls the conqueror of Babylon and deliverer of God s people by name, wrote this prophecy approximately 120yrs before the occurrence of the event and therefore decades before the birth of the conqueror of Babylon and perhaps even his grandparent s birth. See also Isaiah 47 for additional details of the prophet s prediction of the fall of Babylon. Cyrus the Persian and his uncle Darius the Mede were the conquerors of Babylon. Again note that God called Cyrus by name over 100 years prior to his birth to be the 2 P a g e Life More Abundant - Daniel Chapter 5 Study 25 N. tool He would use to subdue this mighty world empire. Further, the bible predicts the exact circumstances and means by which the capital city of Babylon would fall. a. God would raise-up Cyrus the Persian as his rod of punishment against Babylon. Though Cyrus was pagan and did not know the true God of creation, God calls him His Anointed and would use him in His service (Isaiah 45:1, 4, 5) of routing Babylon and liberating the Nation of Israel b. God foretells of an alliance between the two nations of Media and Persia [known as Elam] to conquer Babylon (Isaiah 13:17-19; Isaiah 21:1-9; Jeremiah 49:34-38, 50:9-15, 51:11, 28-33) c. God gave Cyrus the idea of diverting the Euphrates River that ran straight into the center of the fortified city. By diverting the river, drying up the river from the East (Rev 16:12), Cyrus intended to march his army on the riverbed of the Euphrates and attack the double-leaf gate that guarded the city. (Isaiah 45:2) d. The double-leaf gate which guarded the main access to the city would be left open accidentally during Belshazzar s week-long orgy that engrossed the entire city; enabling Cyrus to march on the main city unhampered (Isaiah 45:1, 2; Jeremiah 51:58) e. Cyrus would execute Belshazzar that same night and he and his army would subdue the once world empire, Babylon (Isaiah 45:1; 13:1-8; 14:3-11) f. Babylon would never again be established as a world empire (Isaiah 13:20-22) 7. If God can foretell and direct the events of world history long before they occur, is there any reason why we should worry about tomorrow, since the same God loves us today? Consider that Cyrus is used as a type for Jesus Christ in that: 1. Cyrus was God s anointed (Isaiah 45:1), just as Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed of God (Grk: Cristos; Heb: Messiah) 2. Cyrus was God s shepherd (Isaiah 44:28), even as Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:10-16) 3. Cyrus gave command by inspiration of God to rebuild God s temple and city, even as Jesus gave command to rebuild the temple; He Himself being the Chief Cornerstone of the Temple of God (1 Peter 2:6-8; Isaiah 28:16, 44:24-45:1-6, 13) 4. Cyrus was the righteous man who dried up the rivers from the east so kings may proceed, even as Jesus is the King of Righteousness and King of Kings who too comes from the east (Isaiah 41:2, 3; Rev 16:12). That God would typify Himself through Cyrus is a wonderful act, once again showing God is no respecter of persons but has called all, and will use all who are obedient to His will. We should never under estimate the power of our influence over the lives of others. In time Cyrus would himself come to honor and acknowledge the true God as 3 P a g e Life More Abundant - Daniel Chapter 5 Study 25 N. a result of Daniel's life witness and his conveying truths about Cyrus' life, written in God's word years before his birth (Ezra 1:2, 2 Chronicles 36:23; Isaiah 41:2, 3, 25). SUMMARY: Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am] God, and [there is] none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Isaiah 46:9, 10 I [am] the LORD: that [is] my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them: Isaiah 42:8, 9 Let us put our trust in the God Who is Alpha and Omega, knowing the end from the beginning. If you have never done so, ask God into your heart today, right now, that He may dwell with you and direct your path (Revelation 3:20-22, Proverbs 3:5, 6) FACTOID: Historians for centuries had lost any tangible record of the existence of King Belshazzar of Babylon except that which is written in the bible. Because no other information was available to confirm his existence, the bible was discredited by historians and said to be inaccurate. Not until the discovery of Cyrus cylinder in 1879, which Cyrus himself commissioned to be written after the conquest of Babylon, was the name Belshazzar confirmed. Historians had to correct themselves and affirm that the bible was accurate (Encyclopedia reference to Cyrus Cylinder).
