CHRISTMAS EVE FAMILY SERVICE PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Pastorale, from the Christmas Concerto Archangelo Corelli Jonah Yousif, violin The Holly and the Ivy traditional English carol, arr. Robert Norman The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood The holly bears the crown; O the rising of the sun, And the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a blossom, As white as lily flower, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To be our sweet Savior. O the rising of the sun The holly bears a prickle As sharp as any thorn, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ On Christmas Day in the morn. O the rising The holly bears a berry As red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To do poor sinners good. O the rising The Senior Schola The Virgin s Slumber Song Max Reger Amid the roses Mary sits and rocks her Jesus child, While amid the treetops sighs the breeze so warm and mild. And soft and sweetly sings a bird upon the bough: Ah, baby, dear one, slumber now! Happy is Thy laughter, holy is Thy silent rest, Lay Thy head in slumber, fondly on Thy mother s breast! Ah, baby, dear one, slumber now! Darian Davis and Phoebe Krawczyk There Is No Rose Malcolm Archer There is no rose of such vertu As is the rose that bare Jesu. Alleluya. 2 For in this rose conteined was Heaven and earth in litel space, Resmiranda. 1

By that rose we may well see There be one God in persons three, Pares forma. 2 Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth. Transeamus. 3 1 a wonderful thing 2 of the same form 3 let us go The Intermediate and Senior Girls Choirs Psallite Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) Psallite, unigenito, Christo Dei filio, Redemptori Domino, Puerulo jacenti in praesepio. Ein kleines Kindelein liegt in dem Krippelein Alle liebe Engelein dienen dem Kindelein und singen ihm fein. Sing your psalms to Christ, the only bego en Son of God, sing your psalms to the Redeemer, the child lying in the manger. A small child lies in the manger. All the blessed angels serve Him and sing to Him. The Intermediate and Senior Boys and Girls Choirs Masters in this Hall Gustav Holst Masters in this hall, hear ye news today Brought from over sea, and ever I you pray: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell sing we clear! Holpen are all folk on earth born is God s Son so dear: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell sing we loud! God today hath poor folk raised And cast a-down the proud. Going o er the hills through the milk white snow Heard I ewes bleat while the wind did blow: Shepherds many and one sat among the sheep No man spake a word that they had been asleep: Quoth these fellows mine, to Bethlehem we go, To see a mighty Lord lie in manger low: This is Christ the Lord, Masters, be ye glad! Christmas is come in, and no folk should be sad: The Senior Boys Choir Star Carol Sing this night, for a boy is born in Bethlehem, Christ our Lord in a lowly manger lies; - Bring your gifts, come and worship at his cradle, Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary! John Ru er 3

See his star shining bright In the sky this Christmas night! Follow me joyfully; Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary! Angels bright come from heaven s highest glory, Bear the news with its message of good cheer: - Sing, rejoice, for a King is come to save us, Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary! See, he lies in his mother s tender keeping; Jesus Christ in her loving arms asleep. Shepherds poor, come to worship and adore him, Offer their humble gifts before the son of Mary. Let us all pay our homage at the manger, Sing his praise on this joyful Christmas night; Christ is come, bringing promise of salvation; Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary! The Junior Girls Choir Do You Hear What I Hear Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne Said the night wind to the li le lamb, Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, li le lamb, Do you see what I see? A star, a star, dancing in the night, With a tail as big as a kite. Said the li le lamb to the shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song high above the tree, With a voice as big as the sea. Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, Do you know what I know? In your palace warm, mighty king, Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child, shivers in the cold, Let us bring Him silver and gold. Said the king to the people everywhere, Listen to what I say: Pray for peace, people everywhere! Listen to what I say: The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night, He will bring us goodness and light. The Treble Boys Choir 4

O Holy Night Adolphe Adam O holy night! the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior s birth; Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared, and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born, O night divine! O night, O night divine. Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand; So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men from the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend; He knows our need, to our weakness no stranger; Behold your King! before the lowly bend! Behold your King! your King! before him bend. Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother, And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy Name. Christ is the Lord, then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory evermore proclaim, His power and glory evermore proclaim. The Treble Boys Choir Upperclassmen In dulci jubilo (Hymn 28) Johann Michael Bach INTROIT In the bleak mid-winter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago. PRAYER OF DEDICATION ANTHEM Angels Carol John Ru er Have you heard the sound of the angel voices Ringing out so sweetly, singing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly As a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven To the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song. He is come in peace in the winter s stillness, Like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night; He is come in joy like the sun at morning Filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as the child of Mary; In a simple stable we have seen his birth: Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing, Peace on earth. He will bring new light to a world in darkness, Like a bright star shining in the skies above; He will bring new hope to the waiting nations When he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Savior s coming; Let the heavens answer with the joyful morn: Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing Christ is Born. A CHRISTMAS PRAYER AND THE LORD S PRAYER (responsively) Rev. F. Schaefer Gracious Lord, be the God of our Christmas celebration. We rejoice with the shepherds over the good news of Jesus birth. We join in the praises of the angelic choir, saying Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God favors! Almighty God, you have favored us with the greatest gift ever given your only bego en Son, light of true light, God of true God. May we never take this, your gift, for granted; may our songs of praise never fade, and may we treasure it in our hearts always and forever. Bless all of us here gathered in worship as well as our loved ones at home. May peace and joy ring in our hearts and reverberate through our communities tonight in the name of Jesus, the new-born King. Amen. 7

Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. * RECESSIONAL HYMN 31 Hark! the Herald Angels Sing Mendelssohn CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CLOSING VOLUNTARY Toccata on Joy to the World Craig Phillips Sunday, December 31 A worship service will be held in the sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. only. No Sunday School. Nursery Care available. ON THE COVER Nativity, NC Wyeth, 1912 This oil painting was completed for Thomas Nelson Page s article The Stable at the Inn published in ʹScribners Magazine in 1912. Take a moment to notice that the focus of the painting and that the source of light is infant Jesus. Having Christ as the source of light in our life doesn t necessarily mean that we will not have times of darkness. However, having Christ does mean that we have all that we need to safely navigate through the night into the dawn. May the light of Christ go with us from worship this evening and throughout all the days ahead. Stay connected with Kirk in the Hills 8 Rev. Dr. Nathaniel D. Phillips, Senior Pastor Rev.
