HOW?

Acts 13 & 14

What to look for as you travel with Paul Attitude: What were the Highs and Lows? What were the attitudes of the ones witnessing and those hearing? Witness: What did they say? How did they say it? Support: Who gave and received encouragement? Was praise given?

2nd Leg 3rd Leg Start 1st Leg

Preparation Barnabas and Paul were set apart for this mission. They had an inner call by the Spirit who led them. They had outward confirmation from the church through fasting, prayer, and laying-on-of-hands. This is the working together of the Spirit and Church.

Preparation for them & for us Get On Your Mark: Study, Prayer, Meditation, Confirmation Get Set: Trust and Obey Go: Be Smart, Be Led

2nd Leg 3rd Leg Start 1st Leg

1st Leg of the Trip In Paphos, they met Sergius Paulus. He was a Proconsul, Gentile, Intelligent. He had a sorcerer and a yearning to learn more. He was converted despite the sorcerer s attempts. Purpose: It shows the power of the Holy Spirit, that the Holy Spirit will go head to head with false gods, and God can work through Paul

2nd Leg 3rd Leg Start 1st Leg

2nd Leg of Trip Pair of Problems in Perga #1 Physical Problem: Paul becomes ill. #2 Relational Problem: John Mark returns home.

2nd Leg of Trip Antioch of Pisidia Paul witnesses in the Synagogue to the Jews. Point 1: The Jewish History has a purpose that is to reveal Jesus as Messiah. Point 2: God cannot be defeated as we see in the resurrection. God s purpose and will are supreme.

2nd Leg of Trip Antioch of Pisidia Point 3: The Jews were good about learning Scripture but weak about seeing its fulfillment. God s plan of redemption through Jesus has unfolded. Point 4: The promises made to David are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

2nd Leg of Trip Antioch of Pisidia Point 5: People cannot be saved by the Law. In Jesus there is freedom from the Law because of the forgiveness Jesus offers. Therefore, there is restoration between God and humankind. Point 6: The good news is that there is salvation only through Jesus Christ. The bad news is that there is condemnation for those who reject Jesus.

2nd Leg of Trip Antioch of Pisidia Results of Paul s Speech: Many Jews rejected Paul s plea and they caused discord and animosity. Gentiles were converted. Word spread throughout the region. Disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

2nd Leg 3rd Leg Start 1st Leg

3rd Leg of the Trip Iconium Back in the Synagogue Spoke from a HISTORY perspective

3rd Leg of the Trip Iconium Highs and Lows After speaking, there were many Jewish and Greek converts! Unbelieving Jews stirred up Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas. Paul and Barnabas didn t allow the rejection to affect their witness. Discouragement effects our effectiveness. They were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

3rd Leg of the Trip Lystra Witnessing to Pagans Spoke from a NATURE perspective

3rd Leg of the Trip Lystra Highs and Lows Healing the crippled man showed Paul s compassion. Crowds thought Barnabas & Paul were the Greek gods Zeus & Hermes. They jumped to false conclusions. Jews came from Iconium and Antioch convincing the people to stone Paul and drag him out from the city. Paul shows true commitment. Paul and Barnabas are not discouraged.

2nd Leg 3rd Leg Start 1st Leg

Last Leg of the Trip: The Return Home Paul and Barnabas: encouragement to the new disciples showed them the need to live in community appointed elders prayed for and with them praise to God

What do you look for as you travel the Christian Journey? Witness: Attitude: What attitudes of What can you glean from Paul and Barnabas to make you a better witness? Paul and Barnabas would you like to adopt? Support: How can you give support to another?

In witnessing, it is important to tell the Truth for others to hear. What do you think are the three most important Truths to tell someone about what you believe? Applying the Lesson to Your Life
