Bshop s Page Preston Mathena Gfts From God to You Accordng to Scrpture, God has gven you, the local church, valuable gfts. One such gft s your pastor. Ephesans 4:11, 12 says: Now these are the gfts Chrst gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelsts, and the pastors and teachers. Ther responsblty s to equp God s people to do hs work and buld up the church, the body of Chrst (NLT). Sunday, October 2, has been desgnated Pastor Apprecaton Day n the Internatonal Pentecostal Holness Church. However, the date s not as mportant as the fact that you express your apprecaton to the one God has set n place for your sprtual growth and edfcaton. Genune apprecaton s more than just schedulng one Sunday a year to honor your pastor and mnsteral staff. Expressng apprecaton s a sgn of a healthy church. Bblcally, honorng sprtual leaders s an mportant concept throughout the Bble. Practcally speakng, showng apprecaton serves a number of purposes. Whether you realze t or not, your communty s affected by your expressons of grattude to your pastor. They see your generosty as an outgrowth of the church tself that t s lovng and gvng. Honorng the pastor and staff reveals more about a congregaton than t does about the pastor. Consder ths: It s the pastor who mnsters to vctms of abuse, the grevng, marrages n trouble, newlyweds, the recently dvorced, the unwed pregnant teenager, and the termnally ll. Your pastor prays for you, seeks God for relevant sermons week after week, yet often wonders f he s really makng a dfference n your lfe. He feels the weght of hs callng and hs accountablty before God. Hs/her lfe s sprnkled wth weddngs, funerals, hosptal vstatons, meetngs and crtcal comments from the congregaton. But through t all, your pastor would rather be dong what he s dong than anythng else n the world, because he has experenced the joy of obedence and the satsfacton of seeng sprtual growth among those wth whom he labors. There are many ways you can show your support for your pastor. Frst, consstently pray for your pastor and hs/ her famly. Verbally encourage your pastor and refuse to engage n conversatons that demean hm. Buld up your pastor n the communty and among the unsaved; t s a reflecton not only of your relatonshp wth God, but also of the sprt of your church. Remember the pastor s famly n your plannng; bless hs chldren wth small gfts and remembrances. Be generous, not only wth hs/her salary, but wth thoughtful gestures throughout the year. Apprecaton deas: An oldfashoned poundng of favorte foods, snacks, etc; a mn-vacaton to a bed & breakfast; tckets to a dnner theater wth an overnght stay. Coordnate a week to fll hs malbox wth cards of apprecaton. Have Sunday school classes present a skt for Pastor Apprecaton Day. Gve the pastor s wfe a certfcate for a facal or mancure or a gft card to the mall. Gft certfcates to nce restaurants or tckets to a favorte sports team s event would be enjoyed. Don t mss ths opportunty to bless your pastor and pastoral staff. If October 2 s not a convenent day, choose a day that s convenent. In dong so, your pastor wll be bult up and your church wll be blessed as t takes ths step of obedence. The elders who drect the affars of the church well are worthy of double honor, especally those whose work s preachng and teachng (1 Tmothy 5:17, NIV). Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you n the Lord and who admonsh you. Hold them n the hghest regard n love because of ther work (1 Thessalonans 5:12-13a, NIV). Pastor Apprecaton Day October 2 Voce of the Appalachan Conference of the IPHC

World Mssons & Evangelsm Larry Meadors APPALACHIAN CONFERENCE MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM MINISTRIES GO Change the World From Where You Are Consder the powerful phrase: Change Your World. Is t dealstc or possble? Change s not only possble, but t can be empowered by the Holy Sprt. Acts 17 records the dscples changng the atmosphere of an entre regon. What consttutes real change? It s best measured by outcome and mpact. The greatest outcome s lves eternally changed through the savng grace of God. The greatest mpact s the collectve result of changed lves over a perod of tme. Ths measurement of change goes beyond tradtonal ndcators, such as actvtes and attendance. The place to enact change for Chrst s on your street. As an ndvdual dscple and as the church, we are called to engage our regon. Thus, an externally focused church gves ts people regular opportuntes to change ther world. Ths s nothng more than servant evangelsm. Jesus modeled ths n John 13, as he showed the full extent of Hs love by washng the dscples feet. Servng your communty wthout strngs creates a dalogue that answers the questons, Who are you and why are you dong ths? Ultmately, the church deploys kngdom laborers, not communty volunteers, because the goal s to have lves changed for Chrst. Lsten to your communty; ts needs are tellng you how to reach the people. Below are some deas to get you mpactng for change: Frst Responders Sunday. Jesus sad of hm: I have not found so great fath, no, not n Israel. Wll we be lke the centuron and speak the word? Or wll we be lke Thomas, and nsst upon SEEING before we BELIEVE The power of fath s released when we speak God s Word. For verly I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto ths mountan, Be thou removed, and be cast nto the sea; and shall not doubt n hs heart, but shall beleve that those thngs whch he sath shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he sath (Mark 11:23). Speak to those mountans What mountans are you facng today? Be lke the centuron. JUST SPEAK THE WORD to those PROBLEMS SPEAK THE WORD: To a loved one who needs God s help. (Jesus spoke to the centuron s servant.) To yourself n tmes of fear. For God has not gven us the sprt of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mnd (2 Tmothy 1:7, NKJV). In tmes of uncertanty. You wll keep hm n perfect peace, whose mnd s stayed on You, because he trusts n You (Isaah 26:3, NKJV). In tmes of fnancal dstress. O fear the Lord, ye Hs sants: for there s no want to them that fear Hm. The young lons do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thng (Psalm 34:9, 10). When you need drecton. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delghts n hs way (Psalm 37:23, NKJV). When you need protecton. The name of the Lord s a strong tower; the rghteous run to t and are safe (Proverbs 18:10, NKJV). Over leaders. The kng s heart s n the hand of the Lord, as the rvers of water: He turneth t whthersoever he wll (Proverbs 21:1). For a lost loved one. An old Gospel song summed t up best when t sad: If I never had a problem, I d never know my God could solve them. Psalm 71:1-3 (NKJV) says, In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be put to shame. Delver me n Your rghteousness, and cause me to escape; nclne Your ear to me, and save me. Be my strong refuge, to whch I may resort contnually; You have gven the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and fortress. John 16:33 remnds us, These thngs I have spoken to you, that n Me you may have peace. In the world you wll have trbulaton; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
