Truth Lessons- Lesson 8 A Key View of the Old Testament-From Abraham to Joseph In Abraham is seen God s Calling, God s Promise, Justification by Faith, the Living by Faith, and the Living in Fellowship with God Gen.11:3-4 And they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had tar for mortar. And they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens; and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the surface of the whole earth. Joshua 24:2 And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says Jehovah the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt across the River long ago, Terah the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor; and they served other gods. Acts 7:3 And said to him, Come out from your land and from your relatives, and come into the land which I will show you. Gen.11:31-32 And Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his son s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran they settled there. And the days of Terah were two hundred five years, and Terah died in Haran. Gen.12:1 Now Jehovah said to Abram, Go from your land / And from your relatives / And from your father s house / To the land that I will show you; Gen.12:2 And I will make of you a great nation, / And I will bless you / And make your name great; / And you shall be a blessing. Gal. 3:14 In order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Gen.12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, / And him who curses you I will curse; / And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed. Gen.22:18 And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. Gal. 3:16 But to Abraham were the promises spoken and to his seed. He does not say, And to the seeds, as concerning many, but as concerning one: And to your seed, who is Christ. Gen.15:5-6 And He brought him outside and said, Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And He said to him, So shall your seed be. And he believed Jehovah, and He accounted it to him as righteousness. Rom. 4:21-24 And being fully persuaded that what He had promised He was able also to do. Therefore also it was accounted to him as righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake only that it was accounted to him, But for ours also to whom it is to be accounted, who believe on Him who has raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, Heb.11:8-9 By faith Abraham, being called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt as a foreigner in the land of promise as in a foreign land, making his home in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise; Gen.12:7 And Jehovah appeared to Abram and said, To your seed I will give this land. And there he built an altar to Jehovah who had appeared to him. Gen.12:8 And he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to Jehovah and called upon the name of Jehovah. Gen.14:18 And Melchizedek the king of Salem brought out bread and wine. Now he was priest of God the Most High. Heb. 7:1-3 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, To whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all; first being interpreted king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace; Being without father, without mother, without genealogy; having

neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened to the Son of God, abides a priest perpetually. Heb.7:16-17 Who has been appointed not according to the law of a fleshy commandment but according to the power of an indestructible life. For it is testified, You are a Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Gen.18:1-22 And Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre as he was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and there were three men standing opposite him. And when he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the earth And said, My Lord, if I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass on from Your servant. Please let a little water be fetched, and do wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And let me fetch a morsel of bread that you may sustain yourselves. After that you may pass on, since you have come to your servant. So they said, Do as you have said. And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, Quickly prepare three measures of fine flour, knead it, and make cakes. And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it. And he took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set them before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, There, in the tent. And He said, I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and then Sarah your wife shall have a son. And Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind Him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah according to the manner of women. And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And Jehovah said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I indeed bear a child when I am old? Is anything too marvelous for Jehovah? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied it, saying, I did not laugh; for she was afraid. And He said, No, but you did laugh. And the men rose up from there and looked down upon Sodom. And Abraham walked with them to send them away. And Jehovah said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, Since Abraham will indeed become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of Jehovah by doing righteousness and justice, that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken concerning him. And Jehovah said, The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah, how great it is; and their sin, how very heavy it is! I shall go down and see whether they have done altogether according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know. And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before Jehovah. And Abraham came near and said, Will You indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed destroy and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put to death the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked. Far be it from You! Shall the Judge of all the earth not do justly? And Jehovah said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake. And Abraham answered and said, Now behold, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord, though I am but dust and ashes. Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five? And He said, I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there. And he spoke to Him yet again and said, Suppose forty are found there? And He said, I will not do it, because of the forty. And he said, Oh may the Lord not be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there? And He said, I will not do it if I find thirty there. And he said, Now behold, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there? And He said, I will not destroy it, because of the twenty. And he said, Oh let the Lord not be angry if I speak yet once more. Suppose ten are found there? And He said, I will not destroy it, because of the ten. And Jehovah went away as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Gen.22:2 And He said, Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you. Gen.22:9 And they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. Gen.22:12 And He said, Do not stretch out your hand upon the boy, nor do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me. In Isaac is Seen the Inheriting of Grace and the Resting and Enjoying Gal. 4:24-28 These things are spoken allegorically, for these women are two covenants, one from Mount Sinai, bringing forth children unto slavery, which is Hagar. Now this Hagar is Sinai the mountain in Arabia and corresponds to the Jerusalem which now is, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother; For it is written, Rejoice, barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not travailing, because many are the children of her who is desolate rather than of her who has her husband. But you, brothers, in the way Isaac was, are children of promise. Gal.4:31 So then, brothers, we are not children of the maidservant but of the free woman. Gen.21:8 And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. Gen.21:9-12 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.so she said to Abraham, Cast out this maidservant and her son, for the son of this maidservant shall not inherit with my son Isaac. And the matter displeased Abraham greatly on account of his son. And God said to Abraham, Do not be displeased on account of the boy and on account of your maidservant. Gen.26:3-5 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you; for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven and will give to your seed all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, Because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws. Gen.24:61-67 And Rebekah arose with her maids, and they rode on the camels and followed the man. And the servant took Rebekah and went away. Now Isaac had come from going to Beer-lahai-roi, for he was dwelling in the region of the Negev. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes; and when she saw Isaac, she sprang off the camel. And she said to the servant, Who is this man who is walking in the field to meet us? And the servant said, It is my master. And she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after the death of his mother. Gen.26:12-14 And Isaac sowed in that land and gained in the same year a hundredfold. And Jehovah blessed him, And the man became rich and continued to grow richer until he became very rich. And he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him. In Jacob is Seen God s Selection, the Transformation in Life, and the Maturity in Life Gen.25:22-23 And the children struggled with each other within her. And she said, If it is so, why am I like this? And she went to inquire of Jehovah. And Jehovah said to her, Two nations are in your womb, / And two peoples shall be separated from your bowels. / And the one people shall be stronger than the other people. / And the older shall serve the younger. Eph. 1:4 Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blemish before Him in love,

Rom. 9:11 Though the children had not yet been born nor had done anything good or bad (that the purpose of God according to selection might remain, not of works but of Him who calls), Gen.31:40-41 Thus I was: By day the dry heat consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. These twenty years have I been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times. Gen.28:10-19 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and he lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And there was Jehovah, standing above it; and He said, I am Jehovah, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie, I will give to you and to your seed. And your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed Gen.28:18-19 And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put under his head, and he set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz previously. Gen.32:22-32 And he rose up that night and took his two wives and his two female servants and his eleven children and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. And he took them and sent them over the stream and sent over what he had. And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. And when the man saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob s hip was dislocated as he wrestled with Him. And the man said, Let Me go, for the dawn is breaking. But Jacob said, I will not let You go unless You bless me. And He said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. And He said, Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed. And Jacob asked Him and said, Please tell me Your name. But He said, Why is it that you ask My name? And He blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for, he said, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been preserved. And the sun rose upon him as he crossed over Penuel, and he limped because of his hip. Therefore the children of Israel do not eat the thigh muscle, which is upon the socket of the hip, to this day, because He touched the socket of Jacob s hip at the thigh muscle. Gen.35:2 Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments. Gen.35:14-15 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. And Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel. Gen.45:26-27 And they told him, saying, Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt. And his heart grew numb, for he did not believe them. And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them; and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. Gen.47:7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Gen.47:10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went forth from Pharaoh s presence. Heb. 7:7 But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater. Gen.49:1-28 49:1 And Jacob called to his sons and said, Gather yourselves together that I may tell you what will happen to you in the last days. 49:2 Assemble yourselves, and listen, O sons of Jacob; / Yes, listen to Israel your father.

49:3 Reuben, you are my firstborn, / My might and the firstfruits of my vigor, / Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. 49:4 Ebullient as water, you will not have the preeminence, / Because you went up to your father s bed; / Then you defiled it he went up to my couch. 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; / Weapons of violence are their swords. 49:6 Come not into their council, O my soul; / Be not united with their assembly, O my glory; / For in their anger they slew men, / And in their self-will they hamstrung oxen. 49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; / And their wrath, for it is cruel: / I will divide them in Jacob, / And scatter them in Israel. 49:8 Judah, your brothers will praise you; / Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; / Your father s sons will bow down before you. 49:9 Judah is a young lion; / From the prey, my son, you have gone up. / He couches, he stretches out like a lion, / And like a lioness; who will rouse him up? 49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, / Nor the ruler s staff from between his feet, / Until Shiloh comes, / And to Him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 49:11 Binding his foal to the vine, / And his donkey s colt to the choice vine, / He washes his garment in wine, / And his robe in the blood of grapes. 49:12 Dark are his eyes with wine, / And white are his teeth with milk. 49:13 Zebulun will dwell at the shore of the sea, / And he will be a shore for ships, / And his flank will be toward Sidon. 49:14 Issachar is a strong donkey, / Couching between the sheepfolds. 49:15 And he saw a resting place that was good / And the land that was pleasant, / And he bowed his shoulder to bear, / And became a task-worker to bring tribute. 49:16 Dan will judge his people, / As one of the tribes of Israel. 49:17 Dan will be a serpent in the way, / A viper on the path, / That bites the horse s heels, / So that his rider falls backward. 49:18 I have waited for Your salvation, O Jehovah. 49:19 Gad, raiders will raid him, / But he will raid at their heel. 49:20 Asher s food will be rich, / And he will yield royal dainties. 49:21 Naphtali is a hind let loose; / He gives beautiful words. 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, / A fruitful bough by a fountain; / His branches run over the wall. 49:23 The archers bitterly attacked him, / And shot at him and harassed him; 49:24 But his bow remained firm, / And the arms of his hands were agile, / By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob / From there is the Shepherd, the stone of Israel 49:25 From the God of your father, who will help you, / And from the All-sufficient One, who will bless you / With blessings of heaven above, / Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, / Blessings of the breasts and of the womb. 49:26 The blessings of your father surpass / The blessings of my ancestors / To the utmost bound of the everlasting hills. / They will be on the head of Joseph, / And on the crown of the head of the one who was separate from his / brothers. 49:27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, / In the morning devouring the prey / And in the evening dividing the spoil. 49:28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them when he blessed them; he blessed them, each one according to his blessing. In Joseph is Seen the Reigning Aspect of the Maturity in Life Gen.37:2 These are the generations of Jacob. Gen.41:38-41 And Pharaoh said to his servants, Can we find such a man like this, in whom the Spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Since God let you know all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be over my household, and according to your word all

my people shall be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than you. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.
