the two foundations luke 6:46-49
luke 6:46-49 46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and don t do the things I say? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them:
luke 6:46-49 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn t shake it, because it was well built.
luke 6:46-49 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.

luke 6:12-20 12 During those days he went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God. 13 When daylight came, he summoned his disciples, and he chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:
luke 6:12-20 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
luke 6:12-20 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
luke 6:12-20 17 After coming down with them, he stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples and a great number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
luke 6:12-20 18 They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those tormented by unclean spirits were made well. 19 The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.
luke 6:12-20 20 Then looking up at his disciples, he said:

THE Picture of two men
THE PICTURE OF TWO MEN 1. The man who builds on rock
luke 6:47-48 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
luke 6:48 When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn t shake it, because it was well built.
THE PICTURE OF TWO MEN 1. The man who builds on rock 2. The man who builds on the ground
luke 6:49 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.
MATTHEW 7:21-27 21 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
MATTHEW 7:21-27 22 On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, didn t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?
MATTHEW 7:21-27 23 Then I will announce to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!
MATTHEW 7:21-27 24 Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
MATTHEW 7:21-27 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.
MATTHEW 7:21-27 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
MATTHEW 7:21-27 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.

1 John 2:3 3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands.
John 14:21 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.
luke 6:46 46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and don t do the things I say?
THE IMPLICATION
Obedience to Jesus has eternal consequences.
Calling yourself a Christian doesn t make you a Christian.
Calling yourself a Christian doesn t make you a Christian. Thinking that you re a Christian doesn t make you a Christian.
Calling yourself a Christian doesn t make you a Christian. Thinking that you re a Christian doesn t make you a Christian. Saying a prayer doesn t make you a Christian.
In much contemporary evangelism, there is little concern for whether or not God will accept us, and much concern for whether or not we will accept Him. Little attention is paid to whether or not we please Him, and much to whether or not He pleases us.
Many popular evangelistic methods are molded by these considerations. As a result, there is far too little stress on God s character and the requirements of the kingdom, and far too much stress on our needs. -DA Carson
Having spiritual experiences doesn t make you a Christian.
Having spiritual experiences doesn t make you a Christian. Obedience to Jesus doesn t make you a Christian.
EPHESIANS 2:8-9 8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God s gift 9 not from works, so that no one can boast.
GALATIANS 2:16 This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified.
What makes a person a Christian?
Luke 6:20 20 Then looking up at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, because the kingdom of God is yours.
Faith in the saving work of Jesus makes a person a Christian.
Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God s gift 9 not from works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-10 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
JAMES 2:14-19 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food
JAMES 2:14-19 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed, but you don t give them what the body needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way faith, if it doesn t have works, is dead by itself.
JAMES 2:14-19 18 But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe and they shudder.
Application 1. Is your life characterized by obedience to Jesus?
PHILIPPIANS 2:12 12 Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Application 2. We must never live in such a way, think in such a way, or teach the Bible in such a way that leaves room for the people around us to have false hope they have been forgiven and redeemed by Jesus, when in fact they have not.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:12-15 12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one s work.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:12-15 14 If anyone s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved but only as through fire.
