Vespers for All Souls in Remembrance of the Homeless November 5, 2017 six o clock in the evening As the 6 o clock hour nears, silence is kept. The service begins with the tolling of a bell. The bell is tolled in remembrance of those in this faith community and in the Inter-Faith Council who died over the past year. The votives placed upon the Communion Table serve as a memorial to those whom we love and who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light. VOLUNTARY Prelude on Resignation William Walker Southern Harmony, 1835 setting by Gordon King My Shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is His Name; in pastures fresh He makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wand ring spirit back when I forsake His ways, and leads me, for His mercy s sake, in paths of truth and grace. When I walk thru the shades of death, Thy presence is my stay; one word of Thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; my cup with blessings overflows; Thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may Thy house be mine abode, and all my work be praise! Here would I find a settled rest (While others go and come), No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home. Text: Isaac Watts The American tune Resignation, upon which the voluntary is based, is the tune most commonly associated with Isaac Watts s paraphrase of Psalm 23. Psalm 23 is the appointed Psalm for All Souls Day. OPENING SENTENCE Let thy prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Psalm 141:2 INTROIT At the River Aaron Copeland Shall we gather by the river, where bright angel s feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God. Yes we ll gather by the river, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints by the river that flows by the throne of God. Soon we ll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease. Soon our happy hearts quiver with the melody of peace. Yes we ll gather by the river the beautiful river, Gather with the saints by the river that flows by the throne of God. A PRAYER FOR LIGHT Grant us, Lord, the lamp of charity which never fails, that it may burn in us and shed its light on those around us, and that by its brightness we may have a vision of that holy City, where dwells the true and never-failing Light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*HYMN Jerusalem, My Happy Home Stanza 1 sung by solo treble Stanza 2 sung by the Choirs Stanzas sung by the 3-5 entire assembly THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25: 6-9 Here on Mount Zion the Lord Almighty will prepare a banquet for all the nations of the world a banquet of the richest food and the finest wine. Here God will suddenly remove the cloud of sorrow that has been hanging over all the nations. The Sovereign Lord will destroy death forever! God will wipe away the tears from everyone's eyes and take away the disgrace his people have suffered throughout the world. The Lord has spoken. When it happens, everyone will say, This is our God! We have put our trust in God, and God has rescued us. God is the Lord! We have put our trust in God, and now we are happy and joyful because God has saved us.

ANTHEM Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal arr. Alice Parker Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore, Hallelujah, praise the Lamb, Hallelujah, glory to the great I AM. And my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly o er those water to the city far away. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb, Hallelujah, glory to the great I AM. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to that land of perfect rest; and I hear them singing in the mansions of the blest. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb, Hallelujah glory to the great I AM. THE SECOND LESSON John 5: 24-27 I am telling you the truth: those who hear my words and believe in him who sent me have eternal life. They will not be judged, but have already passed from death to life. I am telling you the truth: the time is coming the time has already come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will come to life. Just as the Father is himself the source of life, in the same way he has made his Son to be the source of life. And God has given the Son the right to judge, because he is the Son of Man. ANTHEM Be Still My Soul arr. Robert Prizeman Be still my soul the Lord is on thy side, bear patiently the cross of grief or pain Leave to thy God to order and provide in every change He faithful will remain Be still my soul thy best, thy heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end Be still my soul when dearest friends depart and all is darkened in the vale of tears Then shalt thou better know His love His heart who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears Be still my soul the waves and winds shall know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below Be still my soul the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord When disappointment grief and fear are gone sorrow forgot love's purest joys restored Be still my soul when change and tears are past all safe and blessed we shall meet at last THE SERMON THE PRAYERS Leader: People: Leader: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. THE LORD S PRAYER (said by all) Our Mother Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. (The congregation responds with the words in italics.) Show us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your salvation. Clothe your ministers with righteousness; Let your people sing with joy. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety. Lord, keep this nation under your care; And guide us in the way of justice and truth. Let your way be known upon earth; Your saving health among all nations. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; Nor the hope of the poor be taken away. Create in us clean hearts, O God; And sustain us by your Holy Spirit. Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen. Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart [and especially the hearts of the people of this land], that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, whose blessed Son came not to be served but to serve: Bless all, particularly the Inter-Faith Council, who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others; that with wisdom, patience, and courage, they may minister in his Name to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the love of him who laid down his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Eternal God, we praise you for the great company of all those who have finished their course and now rest from their labor. We praise you for those dear to us whom we name in our hearts before you. Especially we praise you for Mike Berkut, Bob Kozelka, Lynda Jensen, Ernest Roberts, Caroline Lindsay, Sue Schroeder, Barbara Nettles-Carlson, Susan Resnik, Judy Trent,

and Billie Cox; and we remember your children known, loved and embraced by you; for whom the Inter-Faith Council was shelter, safety, and home: Christopher Burnette, Sr., Henry Maiden, Willie Mae Patterson, Vonda Rushing, and Fletcher Scurlock. To all these, grant your peace. Let light perpetual shine upon them; and help us so to believe where we have not seen, that your presence may lead us through our years, and bring us at last with them into the joy of your home not made with hands but eternal in the heavens; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ANTHEM The Road Home Stephen Paulus Tell me where is the road I can call my own, that I left, that I lost, so long ago? All these years I have wandered, oh when will I know there s a way there s a road that will lead me home? After wind, after rain, when the dark is done, as I wake from a dream in the gold of day, through the air there s a calling from far away there s a voice I can hear that will lead me home. Rise up, follow me, come away is the call, with love in your heart as the only song; there is no such beauty as where you belong, rise up, follow me, I will lead you home. ANTHEM We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace arr. Moses Hogan We shall walk in peace. We shall walk through the valley in peace. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace. We will meet our loved ones there. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace. There will be no more trials there. For Jesus Himself will be our leader. We shall walk through the valley in peace. LITANY OF THANKSGIVING An offering will be received at this time to benefit the Inter-Faith council. Let us give thanks to God for all the gifts so freely bestowed upon us. For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth and sky and sea. For all that is gracious in the lives of men and women, revealing the image of Christ, For our daily food and drink, our homes and families, and our friends, For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, For health and strength to work, and leisure to rest and play, For the brave and courageous, who are patient in suffering and faithful in adversity, For all valiant seekers after truth, liberty, and justice, For the communion of saints, in all times and places, Above all, we give you thanks for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord; To Christ be praise and glory, with you, O Creator, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

*HYMN Now the Day is Over Stanzas 1 sung by the and 2 entire assembly Stanza 3 sung by the Choirs Stanzas sung by the 4-6 entire assembly *BENEDICTION *THE DISMISSAL Let us go forth rejoicing in the power of the spirit. Thanks be to God. VOLUNTARY How Firm a Foundation Jean Langlais How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God's excellent word! What more can be said than to you God has said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? "Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. "When through deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. "When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine. "The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no never, no never forsake!" (The congregation is invited to remain seated during the voluntary.)
