November 19, 2017 Twenty-fourth Week after Pentecost-Proper 28 Holy Eucharist Rite I 8:00 am Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire you may use the following prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for thy holy catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. Amen. W Procession in Silence Opening Acclamation BCP 323 W Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Collect for Purity BCP 323 Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law BCP 324 Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. The Gloria BCP 324 Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, W art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day BCP 184 The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. [Please kneel as you are able] Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that, by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 [You may be seated] A Reading from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, There is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Response Psalm 90 Lord, you have been our / refuge * from one generation to a/nother. Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were / born, * from age to age you are / God. You turn us back to the dust and / say, * Go back, O child of / earth. For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is / past * and like a watch in the / night. You sweep us away like a / dream; * we fade away suddenly like the / grass. In the morning it is green and / flourishes; * in the evening it is dried up and / withered. For we consume away in your dis/pleasure; * we are afraid because of your wrathful indig/nation. 2 Our iniquities you have set be/fore you, * and our secret sins in the light of your / countenance. So teach us to number our / days * that we may apply our hearts to / wisdom. Gospel Matthew 25:14-30 W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, `Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents. His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master. And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, `Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents. His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master. Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, `Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours. But his master replied, `You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for

this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Homily [You may be seated after the sermon opening prayer] Urgent Courage or Prudent Caution [After the homily there will be a moment of silence for private meditation] Creed BCP 326 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. 3 We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. W We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers Form 1, BCP 383 With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying, [Please kneel as you are able] For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord. For Donald, our President; Mary, our Governor; and Mick, our Mayor; for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord. For Oklahoma City, for every city and community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord. For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord. For the peace and wellbeing of all who defend our country at home and abroad, and keep safe all who are in dangerous circumstances, let us pray to the Lord. For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, especially: [special intentions], and for all in need of healing, let us pray to the Lord. For peace, understanding and reconciliation among all people. For the end of violence and terrorism. For those affected by, and in harms way of, natural disasters: hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wildfires, and earthquakes. For the safety of all first responders. mental illness. For the children of New Hope Ministries and all who are incarcerated.for the refugees and people of war-torn nations. For the resolution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. And for all the intentions in the Prayer Box; let us pray to the Lord. In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for..., and in the Cathedral Cycle of Prayer, we give thanks for..., let us pray to the Lord. For all who are celebrating special occasions: [Special Intentions] For all who are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and for all who are traveling, let us pray to the Lord. W We bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, for those we hold in memory this day and for the recently departed..., let us pray to the Lord. That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord. In the communion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Paul and of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God. To thee, O Lord our God. [The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect] Confession BCP 331 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. [Silence is kept] Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings: the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; 4 for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Absolution BCP 332 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, W have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Peace BCP 332 The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Welcome [You may share a greeting of peace with those near you] [You may be seated] Offertory Sentence BCP 377, Psalm 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts.. Setting of the Table Offertory All things come of thee, O Lord. And of thine own have we given thee. The Great Thanksgiving BCP 333 The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Proper Preface BCP 344 Creator of the light and source of life, who hast made us in thine image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus BCP 334 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. W Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Eucharistic Prayer I BCP 334 [Please kneel as you are able] All glory be to thee, Almighty God......in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. The Lord s Prayer BCP 336 And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction BCP 337 Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Prayer of Humble Access BCP 337 We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, 5 but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. The Distribution Post-communion Prayer BCP 339 Let us pray. [Please kneel as you are able] Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Blessing BCP 339 The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, W the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

A versicle is the first half of a preces, said or sung by an officiant or cantor and answered with a said or sung response by the congregation or choir. One of the most familiar examples of this is, Alleluia, Christ is risen. answered by The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia, There are other examples of this format scattered throughout our services. According to our BCP, psalms can be said or chanted in several formats. Direct recitation is the reading of a whole psalm in unison. Antiphonal recitation is the verse-by-verse alternation between groups, between the minister and the congregation, between the choir and the congregation, or between the two sides of the congregation concluding with the Gloria Patri. Responsorial recitation is chosen by some churches. In this format a refrain is first sung by a cantor and repeated by the congregation. The cantor then sings several verses from the psalm interspersed by a reprise of the refrain by the congregation. 6 To the Glory of God The Flowers on the Altar are given to the Glory of God by John Koons, Rick and Jani Hill in memory of Rollin and Harriet Koons. S t a y i n g P o s i t i v e We are bombarded from every angle, from all sorts of media, and from every point of view about the negative aspects of our culture, politics, religion, and economy. Everyone has an opinion about everything 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is hard to escape it, to not listen to it, or to just totally disregard it. But even in the face of all the negativity, we are called by God to count our blessings, to thank God for life and life abundant, to act out of love not fear, and to be people of hope not hate. So yes, we need to hear the struggles, hurts and pains that are happening all around us and recognize our own. Yet, we are to remain positive knowing that God will lead us in paths of righteousness and inspire us to be beacons of hope. May it be so! In God s Peace, Dean Justin+ beacon o f hope...
