Sunday June 26, 2011 Phone: 570.829.5216 Pastor David Miklas e-mail: pastormiklas@aol.com Message: Patriotic - 2011 Text: Psalm 33, II Timothy 3:1-17 "America, the Rest of the Story" Introduction: America has a heritage that comes from Psalm 33:10-12 where we read, "The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. (11) The counsel of the LORD standeth forever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD..." Please listen as I read several passages of scriptures, that in the future I encourage you to underline in your Bibles. Proverbs 14:34, "RIGHTEOUSNESS exalteth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people." Proverbs 28:12, "When RIGHTEOUS men do rejoice there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden." Proverbs 29:2, "When the RIGHTEOUS are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. Jeremiah 4:2, "The Lord liveth in truth, in Judgment and in RIGHTEOUSNESS..." When I think of America, I think of a Christian nation. I do not think of the nation that President Barack Obama described at a press conference in Turkey shortly after his inauguration. When asked about a future partnership between America and Turkey, the president s response was both historically and culturally inaccurate. He said, Although we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values. I ask to whose ideals and set of values is he referring? If we are no longer bound by historic Judeo-Christian fundamentals of governance, by what are we bound? It is important to remember that America is set apart from every other nation on the face of the earth. America is a Biblical and Judeo-Christian based culture. Our laws recognize the freedom of all citizens to believe or not to believe whatever they want. But America s Founders, America s previous presidents, and even our Supreme Court have all acknowledged that America is a Christian nation both legally and culturally. We should not be ashamed to continue acknowledging that superiority of tradition and law. Nor should we be ashamed to attempt to spread this religion-based culture to other nations through peaceful persuasion. Over in the New Testament, in II Timothy 3:1-15, we find a WARNING for today where we read, This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. (2) For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, (3) Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, (4) Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; (5) Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (6) For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, (7) Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (8) Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. (9) But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. (10) But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, (11) Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. (12) Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. (13) But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. (14) But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; (15) And that from a child thou hast Page 1

known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Day after day in our nation the ill winds of change are blowing compromise and corruption right into our faces. We are in deep trouble politically, morally, economically, educationally and religiously. Religiously, more than two generations of parents have not been to church. Now the third generation is struggling even more to understand what truth is and who God is. Our nation is in trouble, our churches are in deep trouble and our families are disintegrating at an alarming rate. The financial mess is continuing to unravel like the threads on a cheap garment. The mind-set in Washington, D.C., for far too long, has been that anything can be fixed if you throw enough money at it. Over the past year that mentality has gone further than ever before. As one Senator reputedly said, "A billion here, a billion there, and the next thing you know you are talking about real money." But today, the philosophy that underlies the system is insane. As one said, You can't spend yourself out of debt. You can't get out of the hole by digging the hole deeper. As Winston Churchill said, I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. Ronald Regan said, Government s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it! Another said, A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. Now, while the economic dilemma is on the front burner, making head-lines, righteousness is under assault. When we step out of our comfortable little subculture back into the real world, evil is being exalted in our nation on a variety of fronts. President Obama became the first President to celebrate GAY PRIDE MONTH at the White House. During his 18 minute talk where he spoke openly of his full support to help the radical homosexual movement he took a shot at Christians by characterizing opponents of homosexual political issues as holding fast to "worn arguments and old attitudes." Over the past 40 years prayer and Bible teaching have been taken out of the public schools. It is now becoming politically and legally incorrect to even mention Jesus in the public arena lest we offend someone. We promote legal abortion and slaughter over 4,000 innocent babies a day. Gambling and pornography are now socially acceptable. Profanity is no longer considered bad language. Jesus, the Bible, and the Christian faith are openly mocked while the cults and false religions of the world are now revered and protected. We are pandering to Islam, and bowing openly to their every wish. While on the other hand, Christians are under attack for holding Bible studies in their homes. We have changed God's definition of what marriage and the family is. The sin of homosexuality, men marrying men and women marrying women, is now considered an acceptable mainstream lifestyle choice. Hello! Christians! Think it is time we wake up??? But hold it right there, and please consider the rest of the story. First: The eternal God is still God! When every human element disappoints, diminishes and dies, the God of the universe is still alive, able and accessible to you and me! Again in Psalm 33:18-20 we read, (18) Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; (19) To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. (20) Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. Second: The Bible, the Book of God, is still in our hands! The philosophers, the politicians, the press and all the prognosticators will, by their human wisdom, so often Page 2

stumble and fail. The human arena is forever lacking, but the Word of God is everlastingly true. Inspired by God at its inception, it has been protected and preserved for us today. We are not as ships without rudder and sail. We are not left to find our way without guidance and instruction. Pick up your Bible! The Word that God inspired, He has now preserved. Therefore, we have His inspired, inerrant and infallible Word. It will stand, and it will keep you steady in these turbulent, crazy, times! Psalms 119:89, For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. I Peter 1:23-25, Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (24) For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: (25) But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Third: God still answers prayer! History teaches that difficult times are the perfect occasion to seize the day and trust the power of prayer. As our Heavenly Father, He attends to the interests of His children, and He allows us access to Himself. His ear is attentive to our prayers. In times like these, the sons and daughters of the living God should not forget that they can pray and get answers from God! Luke 18:1, 7, And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; (7) And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? Fourth: Heaven is neither bankrupt nor does it need any stimulus package or a bailout! In Psalm 24:1 we read, The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. God is our source and our resource! He is our supply! You cannot exhaust Heaven's storehouse. Whatever withdrawals we make, whatever size they may be, and however often we do so, we will not bring pressure or jeopardy to the bank of Heaven. Someone said, During tough economic times, God is more focused on developing our character than on maintaining our financial stability. In Malachi 3:7-12 we read, Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? (8) Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. (9) Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. (10) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. (11) And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. (12) And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. Fifth: The truth is still the truth! However wicked the world becomes, the truth is still valid. Every principle of Scripture is unchanged! Every doctrine of the faith remains solid! Every moral value is yet in place! Whatever the polls or the trends, the treasure of truth is timeless! Don t revise your convictions and your values to fit in with society's shifting sands! Plant your feet on the solid rock of God's truth. Build everything - your life, your family, your church, your business on God's eternal truth! In 2 Tim 3:14-4:4 we read, But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; (15) And that from a child thou hast Page 3

known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 4:1) I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; (2) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (4) And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Six: Your family is still the foundation of the church and the nation. In Psalms 11:3 we read, "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" As we see in the news one politician after another, as well as religious leaders, right on down to everyday citizens and even in Christian homes, immorality is destroying this foundation. Please understand, the key to a strong nation is NOT the government, it is the FAMILY, the basic building block of a strong civilization. The first human institution that God chose to establish was the home. The first fortress Satan attacked was the home, and it is still under attack today. The home is the foundation of the church as well as the foundation of the nation. I don t know about you, but we need the presence of God in our homes now more than ever, and more than any other thing that we desire. His presence is needed, not just in our home, but in our own lives as well! It s not the money we need! It s not the worldly things and earthly pleasures that we need! It s not the possessions that we need! We need the presence of God back in our lives! Therefore in these troubled times, be sure to keep the home fires burning! Don't neglect your family! Pray together! Spend time together! Show love to one another! Be understanding! Seven: Your church is the bridge between you and the nation. The truth of the matter: God is not dead as was proclaimed back in the 1960 s with the flower children. My God is still alive and still on His throne. The truth of the matter: This is not the end of Christian America. While there is a remnant still present, no matter how small in size, we are still in the majority as we spread the Salt and uncover the Light of the World. Jesus Christ is that light in this darkened world. The truth of the matter: The church is not sucking its last breath and ready to die. Maybe some denominations are dying. However, the Church of the living God which is the Body of Christ is still alive. It is still the church triumphant! Don't neglect your church! Be there for everything! Get involved! Come early and stay late - Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night! When trouble is running amuck, you should run to God, not from God! You should run to the church house, not from it! You should run to the man of God, not from him! In Hebrews 10:24-25 we read, And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: (25) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Eight: Soul winning is still a priority! Yes, when the dark clouds loom low and the storm rages about us, it should remind us to get our spiritual house in order. Repentance should come first, then reconciliation and restitution as we return to where we should have been all along. Page 4

The Great Commission is still our marching order - even in difficult times! Some people soften up when trouble comes. They may be much more open to your witness this year than they were a year ago. Jesus still reminds us in Matthew 28:18-20, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Ninth: Revival is still possible in our nation. Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing." That's exactly what too many of us have done absolutely nothing! We are too busy making money, watching TV, fixing our yard, or doing things that don't have eternal value to save this nation. You and I live in a democratic republic, a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. That makes us the ultimate decision-makers, and before God we are ultimately responsible for what takes place in this nation. The only hope for returning this nation back to God is for those of us who name the name of God to turn back towards Him and become once again the moral consciousness of this nation. Someone said, "When there is a deep concern for MORAL RIGHTEOUSNESS on the part of the people, and they live and express themselves to that end, There is rejoicing; There is religious and national freedom; There is the hand and blessing of God upon that people; and There is the unparalleled opportunity for preaching the Word of God." II Chronicles 7:14 reads, "If my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Remember this: Nations do not repent, Individuals repent! Nations don't turn from their sins, Individuals turn from their sins! Nations do not get right with God, Individuals get right with God! America is but a reflection of our hearts and lives. May we do all we can to stand for RIGHTEOUSNESS, so that the next generation can still have "One nation under God." To draw this message to a close, we read in I Corinthians 16:22, If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema, Maranatha! The word Anathema means accursed. The expression Maranatha, meaning the Lord is coming became a common mode of greeting and parting in the first century. Therefore, I Corinthians 16:22 could be written this way: If any person does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him or her be accursed, the Lord is coming! The first century was the most fervent and evangelistic generation of the 20 centuries of church history. Christianity established such a foot-hold in the pagan world, that by the third century, it was acknowledged as the state religion. Someone wrote: By contrast, with all our sophisticated means of communication, the 21st century church s program of evangelism lags behind the birth rate. We are living in the post- modern Christian era. If we possessed the same confident expectation as the Maranatha Christians, we could doubtless reach our generation for Christ. But strangely, the closer we get to the actual coming of Christ, the less confident the church seems to be about His coming. Page 5

As a teacher and preacher of prophecy for over 44 years, I can recall many sleeping Christians who were suddenly turned on when the truth of Christ s imminent coming gripped them. Churchianity doesn t motivate anyone, but the Maranatha concept does. It makes carnal, cold, indifferent believers fervent in spirit. The Bible instructs us to ALWAYS be looking for the day of Christ s return. I suggest that each night before going to bed you read some of the Bible passages on the Lord s coming and then go to sleep thinking about them. As we close, let me remind you that the real issue is not coming to church and singing hymns or doing volunteer work; it isn t even knowing the contents of the Bible; IT IS KNOWING JESUS CHRIST! It is having a personal relationship with Him who said, I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10. So, until we meet again my friends, I say Maranatha! *********************************************** If God has spoken to your heart after reading the sermon "America, the Rest of the Story then right now talk to God about what He has spoken to you. Do you have the assurance that one day you will go to heaven? If you have no assurance that you know Jesus Christ, then I trust you will decide to accept Him as your personal Savior. The Bible tells us in Acts 16:31,...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved... Romans 10:13, For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. This prayer is here for those who need to ask Jesus to be their personal Savior: I do want to go to Heaven. I know I am a sinner, and I do believe Jesus Christ died for me. I realize I cannot buy this great salvation, nor can I earn it. Knowing Jesus died on the cross and arose from the grave to pay my sin debt and to purchase my salvation, I do now trust Him as my Savior, and from this moment on I am completely depending on Him for my salvation. If you made the decision to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, let me know.
