NORTHERN GREAT LAKES SYNOD Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Marquette, Michigan ngls@nglsynod.org E-Notes for July 31, 2014 PENTECOST SEASON QUOTE OF THE DAY The church year is a wonderful way in which we recall and celebrate the mighty acts of God in our own lives and times. It is a reminder of God s constant activity not only God s interventions into human history, but also God s grace-filled activity among us now. Through the liturgical year we realize more and more deeply that we are a part of God s ongoing saving and loving activity.during these

[after Pentecost] weeks, the church concentrates on Christ s public ministry his sermon, parables, and miracles. It is a time of growth in faith, hope, and love and thus green paraments are used as a symbol of this growth. ~Altar Guild and Sacristy Handbook, p.81-82 + + + E-Notes is a twice monthly electronic newsletter from the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Mark your calendars for Youth Ministry Events at Fortune Lake! The Canal Run was held Saturday, July 19, in Hancock, with good participation by Copper Country clergy and spouses from above the bridge (the Portage Lift Bridge, that is). In the half-marathon, Amanda Rasner finished ahead of her husband, Pr. D.J. Rasner (Gloria Dei, Hancock). Amanda was third in her age group (35-39). D.J. was slower than usual due to an injury, but still finished well with a good time. (The winner of the half-marathon was Andrew Lund, a member of Good Shepherd, Houghton, south of the bridge.) In the five mile run, Liz Siivola finished ahead of her husband, Pr. Peter Vorhes (Faith, Calumet). Each finished first in their age group (60 and over). Also in the five mile run, René Johnson finished ahead of her husband, Pr. Phil Johnson (President, Finlandia University), and ahead of Pr. Vorhes. And still in the five mile run, Sara Johnston, wife of Pr. Tim Johnston (Bethany, Mohawk), finished between Liz Siivola and René Johnson, ahead of both of the pastors in the five mile run.

The 2014 FCTE (First Call Theological Education) Fall Event will be held November 9-12 at St. Anthony Spirituality Center in Marathon Wisconsin. Please reserve these dates now, and watch for detailed information to arrive during the early part of September. First Call Theological Education cares about your transition to

rostered leadership. The ELCA is committed to providing a threeyear structured program of theological education and involvement in colleague groups, all designed to assist you as newly rostered leaders in the transition to public (rostered) ministry. As a whole church we want to surround you with resources, while still giving you the freedom to determine your unique situation. This year part of the time spent together will be adding your personal input to be used by the ELCA s Theological Education Advisory Council. This council plans to address in a holistic way issues on theological education, leadership development, candidacy, call, and rostered leaders. Please note: if you would like to assist with any of our worship opportunities, please contact Linda Rozumalski at 715-472-4895 or rozumalskili@gmail.com See you in November! Sheri Jackson, First Call Planning Committee Attention former staff members of Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp, families and friends of FLLC staff

alums! It's time for a Gazebonanza! FLLC will celebrate its 85th anniversary on June 7, 2015. Part of the celebration will include the dedication of a new, larger gazebo that is more functional than the present aging one. Since the gazebo has been the setting for most staff meetings for many years, it seems fitting to involve current and former FLLC staff members in funding this project. Gifts by FLLC staff alumni (or given in honor or memory of staffers) are encouraged during this summer s camping season to help pay for the new gazebo. In exchange for a donation of $85, the name and year(s) the staffer worked at camp will be inscribed inside the new gazebo. Gifts can be donated either online or sent directly to 138 Fortune Lake Camp Rd., Crystal Falls, MI 49920. For more details about Gazebo-nanza, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/fortunelake.
