Yu Are Nt Yur Own The Pursuit f Righteusness All things are lawful fr me, but nt all things are helpful. All things are lawful fr me, but I will nt be dminated by anything. 13 Fd is meant fr the stmach and the stmach fr fd and Gd will destry bth ne and the ther. The bdy is nt meant fr sexual immrality, but fr the Lrd, and the Lrd fr the bdy. 14 And Gd raised the Lrd and will als raise us up by his pwer. 15 D yu nt knw that yur bdies are members f Christ? Shall I then take the members f Christ and make them members f a prstitute? Never! 16 Or d yu nt knw that he wh is jined t a prstitute becmes ne bdy with her? Fr, as it is written, The tw will becme ne flesh. 17 But he wh is jined t the Lrd becmes ne spirit with him. 18 Flee frm sexual immrality. Every ther sin a persn cmmits is utside the bdy, but the sexually immral persn sins against his wn bdy. 19 Or d yu nt knw that yur bdy is a temple f the Hly Spirit within yu, whm yu have frm Gd? Yu are nt yur wn, 20 fr yu were bught with a price. S glrify Gd in yur bdy. 1 Crinthians 6:12-20 (ESV) There are 2 main Biblical truths fund in this passage f Scripture: All things are lawful fr me but nt all things are helpful (v. 12) and Yur bdy is a temple f the Hly Spirit (V. 19a). But yu can t just start with trying t apply these Biblical truths t yur life withut first recgnizing what verses 19 & 20 teach. There we read, Yu are nt yur wn, fr yu were bught with a price. S glrify Gd in yur bdy. We are the Lrd s, bth by creatin and redemptin. Jesus lved us and bre ur sins n His bdy n the crss, therefre we n lnger think f ur lives as ur wn. When yu submit yur life t Jesus as Savir (ne wh brings salvatin) yu must submit yurself t Him as Lrd (ultimate authrity). Yu cannt have Jesus as a Savir withut Him being yur Lrd. The tw cannt be separated. We fight lng and hard t have the rights we think we deserve. We want ur way. We dn t like being tld what we can r cannt d. This reveals the true nature f ur sinful hearts. We care mre abut US than we d abut CHRIST IN US. Because f the saving grace f Jesus, my life is n lnger my wn, s I am n lnger able t live nly thinking abut what I want. The life f a believer must display the Gspel and its cntinual sanctificatin (the prcess f becming mre like Christ). In ur greatest mments, we bast Christ. In ur weaknesses, we bast Christ because ur insufficiencies are hidden in the sacrifice f Jesus (thrugh repentance, asking frgiveness, humility, etc.). (See Ephesians 2:8-10). The amazing thing abut the Gspel is GRACE. Yu see, we will never be perfect (Philippians 3:12-16). We will fail every day. But the grace f Jesus cvers ur failures and reminds us f ur cnstant need f Jesus. If we nly fcus n behaving instead f bediently submitting t Christ, legalism and pride take the place f ur effrts fr sanctificatin. Sanctificatin is a prgressive jurney that lasts a lifetime. There is n place fr guilt and shame fr thse wh are in Christ instead there is repentance and the pprtunity t run t Jesus. Our natural tendency is t run t legalism because it is a tangible way t save urselves, but that wuld nullify (vid) the crss. Verse 12 says, All things are lawful fr me but nt all things are helpful. While there might be certain things which wuld be permissible fr me t d, that desn t mean that it wuld be beneficial fr me t d them. In ther wrds, while an actual actin might nt be sinful, yet if smene saw me ding it and then stumbled by my actin, there is an element f accuntability that must be recgnized (read 1 Crinthians 9:19-27 fr mre explanatin). We must cnsider thers in ur decisins and actins fr the sake f the Gspel. Verse 12 cntinues with I will nt be mastered by anything. When we are mastered by smething it means that it cntrls us this is called habitual sin. (i.e an addictin). Sme examples f this are addictins t: prngraphy, alchl, cigarettes, etc.). When we sin, we chse t submit t smething ther than Gd s desire fr us. Sin is us chsing t find fulfillment in smething ther than Christ. Habitual sin and addictins stem frm us trying t find fulfillment in things that will nt satisfy us. Fd itself isn t sinful,

gluttny is (Prv. 23:20-21, Gal. 5:16-26, 1 Cr. 10:31). Sex itself isn t sinful, sex utside f marriage is. Alchl itself is nt sinful, drunkenness is (Eph. 5:8, Rm. 13:13, Luke 21:34, 1 Cr. 6:10, Gal. 5:21, 1 Tim. 3:3). Fr example, alchl in mderatin (when yu are f legal age) is cmpletely permissible. What must then be cnsidered is is it beneficial? We must ask urselves, will my having an alchlic beverage (even in mderatin in this circumstance / situatin) cause anther t stumble r damage my ability t share the Gspel? Befre yu act, think abut the pssibility f yur actins causing guilt, shame r regret. Verse 19 says, Yur bdy is a temple f the Hly Spirit. It is nt up t us t take ur bdies and use them the way we desire. We must use ur bdies t glrify Gd, the One t whm it belngs. This Biblical truth pints t discipline and bedience. It s abut s much mre than alchl, cigarettes, etc. Here are sme areas that must be cnsidered: Hw is yur thught life? What wuld yur thughts display abut yur heart if they were prjected fr everyne t see? What d the wrds yu speak reveal abut yur heart? Are yu getting the rest yu need n a regular basis? Are yu eating healthy fd? Are yu exercising? Are yu maintaining sexual purity? Every structure, ur bdies included, has t be maintained t sustain and fulfill the purpse it has been created fr. Are yu bediently maintaining yur bdy (and ultimately yur life) in a way that glrifies the Lrd and displays the Gspel t thers? We cnsider all f this because after all, isn t it ALL ABOUT THE GOSPEL?! Fr the lve f Christ cntrls us, because we have cncluded this: that ne has died fr all, therefre all have died; and he died fr all, that thse wh live might n lnger live fr themselves but fr him wh fr their sake died and was raised. Frm nw n, therefre, we regard n ne accrding t the flesh. Even thugh we nce regarded Christ accrding t the flesh, we regard him thus n lnger. Therefre, if anyne is in Christ, he is a new creatin. The ld has passed away; behld, the new has cme. All this is frm Gd, wh thrugh Christ recnciled us t himself and gave us the ministry f recnciliatin; that is, in Christ Gd was recnciling the wrld t himself, nt cunting their trespasses against them, and entrusting t us the message f recnciliatin. Therefre, we are ambassadrs fr Christ, Gd making his appeal thrugh us. We implre yu n behalf f Christ, be recnciled t Gd. Fr ur sake he made him t be sin wh knew n sin, s that in him we might becme the righteusness f Gd. 2 Crinthians 5:14-21 (ESV) 2 Crinthians 5:14-21 tells us that because Christ has recnciled us t Himself (thrugh His death and resurrectin); we then becme ambassadrs f the Gspel. His fllwers have been given the Ministry f Recnciliatin. We are t display the Gspel t the wrld thrugh submitting ur lives t Christ daily. A fllwer f Jesus n lnger has the right t say, This is my life. We have been bught with a price, recnciled t Gd thrugh Jesus, and have been given the respnsibility f displaying/prclaiming the Gspel t the wrld. It s nt abut what I want. It s abut what Christ wuld have me d. Des yur life / actins / wrds prtray that a prgressive sanctificatin is happening in yu? Des yur discipline / daily decisins display that yu submit t a Lrd and Savir? These Biblical truths are nt just fr Christian leaders, they are every fllwer f Christ. Will yu cunt the cst f being a disciple f Christ? Is He wrth it t yu?
