Arthur Whitefield Spalding Papers I Collection 10 Biographical Information Arthur W hitefield Spalding (spelled "Spaulding" with a "u" until 1916) was closely connected with the Seventh-day Adventist church throughout his life. It was the year that he was born, 1877, that his parents joined the church. Just before his eleventh birthday, his fam ily m oved to Battle Creek where he worked for several church leaders. At the age of 14, he was secretary to R. M. Kilgore and later secretary to J. H. and W. K. Kellogg at Battle Creek Sanitarium, and secretary to President E. A. Sutherland at Battle Creek College. As an educator, Arthur Spalding headed the departm ent of English and supervised small fruit farming at Emmanuel Missionary College from 1903 to 1906. He taught in and directed elem entary and secondary schools in W isconsin and the South. In 1910 he co-founded Fletcher Institute in North Carolina. A writer throught his life, he produced his first book, A Man of Valor, while teaching at Emmanuel Missionary College. As secretary to Ellen W hite in 1913 he wrote Men of the Mountain under her employ. He has contributed m any articles for church publications and books fam iliar to Adventist readers such as Golden Treasury of Bible Stories and Origin and History of Seventh-day Adventists. For Nineteen years (1922-1941) Arthur Spalding served as founder and full-time secretary of the Hom e Com m ission of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists--writing and lecturing extensively on the home. His wife Maud W olcott Spalding (whom he had married in 1899) developed program s and m aterial for preschool children, especially in the area of nature study. See Babes and Cradles (Adventist Heritage Center, PZ8.3.S773B3) and boxes 11 and 12 of this collection. Spalding died Decem ber 15, 1953, near Collegedale, Tennessee. See A Fire in My Bones (Adventist Heritage Center BX6158.9.S68M3) for a biography by his children. Scope The Arthur W hitefield Spalding Papers were placed in the Adventist Heritage Center in the Jam es W hite Library, Andrews University, in June 1960 by Arthur Spalding's children--ronald W. Spalding, M.D., and Elizabeth Spalding McFadden of Gobles, Michigan. The papers contain correspondence, m anuscripts, and articles collected by Arthur Spalding. Of particular interest are materials dealing with the Seventh-day Adventist General Conference Hom e Com m ission (which Spalding founded and directed from 1922 to 1941) and Spalding's correspondence dealing with the writing of Origin and History of Seventh-day Adventists. Please not the existence of a second Spalding Papers collection in the Center for Adventist Research. They do overlap in coverage but came from different sources so were not merged. Arrangement The folders and volumes are referred to as "fld" and "vol." They are numbered on the basis of topical and chronological sequence. To call for items in the collection, use "Collection 10" with box and folder or volume number as indicated in the following inventory. Provenance The Spalding Collection was donated to Andrews University by Ronald W. Spalding and Elizabeth V. McFadden on June 2, 1976. Some elements of the collection were donated in June 1960.
