PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ This past Wednesday, Nov. 2 nd the Church celebrated the Feast of All Souls, when we pray for the repose of the souls of all of our deceased loved ones. And throughout this month of November we continue to pray for all the dead. That is why I invite you to write the names of your deceased loved ones in our parish Book of the Dead, which will remain at the front of church throughout this month. At each weekend Mass in November we will pray for all those listed in this Book. And please note that next to the Book we have a poster with the names of all those who have been buried from St. Beatrice in the past year. This poster was designed by parishioner Barb Piltaver and donated by Sunrise Printing Co. in Schiller Park. Thank you to them! And because the Church prays for the dead during this month, the Vatican recently issued guidelines for all Catholics reminding us about the respect that is due to cremated remains of the deceased. Because of limited space here, I d like to summarize the guidelines by quoting excerpts from the Associated Press news story about this: The Vatican [says that] remains cannot be scattered, divvied up or kept at home but rather stored in a sacred, church-approved place. For most of its 2,000-year history, the Catholic Church only permitted burial, arguing that it best expressed the Christian hope in resurrection. But in 1963, the Vatican explicitly allowed cremation as long as it didn't suggest a denial of faith about resurrection. The new document from the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith repeats that burial remains preferred, with of icials calling cremation a brutal destruction of the body. But it lays out guidelines for conserving ashes for the increasing numbers of Catholics who choose cremation for economic, ecological or other reasons. The Vatican said ashes and bone fragments cannot be kept at home, since that would deprive the Christian community as a whole of remembering the dead. Rather, church authorities should designate a sacred place, such as a cemetery or church area, to hold them. Only in extraordinary cases can a bishop allow ashes to be kept at home. Vatican of icials declined to say what circumstances would qualify, but presumably countries where Catholics are a persecuted minority and where Catholic churches and cemeteries have been ransacked would qualify. The document said remains cannot be divided among family members or put in lockets or other mementos. Nor can the ashes be scattered in the air, land or sea since doing so would give the appearance of "pantheism, naturalism or nihilism," the guidelines said. It repeated church teaching that Catholics who choose to be cremated for reasons contrary to the Christian faith must be denied a Christian funeral. The author of the text, Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, was asked at a Vatican brie ing if Pope Francis had any reservations about the text, particularly the refusal to let family members keep remains of their loved ones at home. "The dead body isn't the private property of relatives, but rather a child of God who is part of the people of God," Mueller said. "We have to get over this individualistic thinking." I think that this document touches on an important topic: the dead deserve respect by being given a proper burial. Just as we would never keep a deceased person s body in our home in a casket, so also we should not keep their cremated remains, because no matter what form the remains take we should always be mindful that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and if our loved ones are Christian, they deserve a Christian burial. Finally, don t forget that this Saturday, Nov. 12 th is our 5 th annual Polish Dinner, sponsored by our Knights of Columbus, at 6pm in the basement hall of the former school building. You can still buy tickets this weekend after Mass. Hope to see you there! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

To All the Ministries Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s Gospel we find that God is a God of the living, and this is indeed the core of our hope. Jesus has risen and is with us, therefore, at no time should we be without hope for the future. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society Of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. What We re Learning 7 th Grade We learned about choices that build up our relationship with God. There are four key words that help us understand God s desire to restore peace to our life. Forgive, to pardon and renounce anger against a person who is at fault. Reconcile, to re-establish a close relationship with God and others. Redeem, to pay off, set free, or fulfill. Save, to keep from harm, danger or loss. 8 th Grade Through the three Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation we are welcomed to and nourished by the church. Through the two Sacraments of Healing, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, we are healed spiritually, emotionally, and sometimes physically. Through the two Sacraments at the Service of Communion, Matrimony and Holy Orders, we are given strength to be faithful in our commitments and in our relationships.
