CONFIRMATION MASS The Sacrament of Confirmation After Jesus death the apostles were weak and afraid. Their leader and friend had been taken away from them. They felt alone and helpless. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit but they were still afraid. When the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles, He filled them with His gifts and really changed them. They wanted to tell everybody about Jesus. They wanted to continue with His work. At our Baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit. We were welcomed into the Church. We became part of the people of God. At Confirmation we are strengthened by the coming of the Holy Spirit into our lives. We are Jesus witnesses. We are made special workers for His Kingdom. May we always walk in his presence. 3

ENTRANCE HYMN Come now is the time to worship 1. Come, now is the time to worship, Come, now is the time to give your heart. Come, just as you are, to worship. Come, just as you are, before your God, come. One day every tongue will confess you are God. One day every knee will bow. Still the greatest treasure, remains for those, who gladly choose you now. (repeat) Repeat verse 1. INTRODUCTORY RITE INTRODUCTION Today is a very special day in our lives. We are going to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Once we have been confirmed and received the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are called to communicate through our words, actions and deeds, that we have become true and committed Christians. Before our Mass begins this evening, we in Holy Family Parish, parents, children, teachers and friends, wish to extend a very warm welcome to Bishop William Kenney and thank him sincerely for coming here today to confirm us. SIGN OF THE CROSS 4

PENITENTIAL RITE: Lord have mercy (Sung) Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy Gloria! (Sung) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, We glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us; You take away the sins of the world, Receive our prayer; You are seated at the right hand of the Father, Have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy one, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, With the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT: Let us pray [that God will increase our faith and bring to perfection the gifts he has given us] Almighty God, every good things comes from you. Fill our hearts with love for you, increase our faith, and by your constant care protect the good you have given us. 5

LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING: Is 42:1-3 Thus says the Lord: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Upon whom I have put my Spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, Not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench. The Word of the Lord THANKS BE TO GOD RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Response: Send forth your spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches. R All of these look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it, they gather it up: you open your hand, they have their fill. R You send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord last forever! May the Lord rejoice in his works! R I will sing to the Lord all my life, make music to my God while I live, May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I find my joy in the Lord. R 6

SECOND READING 1 Cor 12:4-13 Brothers and Sisters: There are different kinds of Spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; another faith by the same Spirit; another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; another mighty deeds; another prophecy; another discernment of spirits; another varieties of tongues; another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes, As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one bosy, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation: (sung) Come O Lord give us your Spirit, Come O Lord, into our lives. Come O Lord, open our hearts To receive your Word. (All) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Come Spirit come. 7

GOSPEL The Lord be with you And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. GLORY TO YOU LORD L.k 4:16-22 Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went accordingly to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. And spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 8

HOMILY Bishop William Kenney RITE OF CONFIRMATION RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES After the Homily all the candidates stand and Bishop William Kenney asks them and the congregation: ALL: ALL: ALL: ALL: ALL ALL: Do you reject Satan, and all his works and all his empty promises? I Do Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth? I Do Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? I Do Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came upon the apostles at the Pentecost and today is given sacramentally in Confirmation? I Do Do you believe in the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting? I Do This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus Our Lord. Amen 9

LAYING ON OF HANDS Bishop William Kenney lays hands upon all the candidates by extending his hands over them and says: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who bought these your servants to new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, freeing them from sin: send upon them, O Lord, the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete; give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety; fill them with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. ANOINTING WITH CHRISM: The candidates and sponsors approach Bishop William Kenney. The sponsor places his/her right hand on the candidate s shoulder. Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around. Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister His grace. No work too hard for him, in faith receive from Him, Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. Turn to me (Solo) Turn to me O Turn and be saved, Says the Lord, for I am God; There is no other, none beside me. I call your name. 1. I am he that comforts you; who are you to be afraid?
