Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES Sept. 26 - Oct. 2, 2015 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY M. K. THYAGARAJA BHAGAVATHAR - 3 After the success of Pavalakodi, Thyagaraja Bhagavathar starred again with S. D. Subbulakshmi in Naveena Sarangadhara (1936), again directed by K. Subramanyam who had by now become a popular filmmaker. The movie fared well at the box office. The back story of Sarangadhara is interesting and deserves to be narrated at some length. It was first written in English and published in 1883 by the Telugu literary genius Gurazada Appa Rao who wrote it in a poetic form. Soon it became a favourite oftelugu theatre and was successfully staged all over the Telugu speaking areas of the old Madras Presidency including Madras City. Not many are aware that the great actor and film personality Paul Muni of India (as Baburao Patel of Filmindia, the famed film journalist of India described him) V.Nagaiah who, in his early days, was involved in Telugu theater, played the female role of Chitrangi, the heroine, with such success that very few believed that the artiste was a man! The King of Rajamahendravaram (known as Rajamundry during the British Rule, some Tamil papers called it Rajamundhiri though it had no links with cashewnuts!) had a second wife Chitrangi, a lovely woman. There were rumours that Sarangadhara, his son and the step-mother Chitrangi were lovers which the king believed. He sentenced the son to have his hands and feet chopped off. While the son suffered with unbearable pain and flowing blood, he prayed to Lord Shiva. The Lordappeared before him and restored his limbs and made him a handsome young man again. The story was made into films many times in many languages in India. The great playwright, Pammal Sambandham Mudaliar, adapted it as a stage play in Tamil with success. The legendary S.G. Kittappa and M.K.T. Bhagavathar played the role on stage with great success. In 1930 the multilingual filmmaker and actor Y. V. Rao made it as a silent film with good success. The first Tamil version was produced in 1935 by V.S.K. Padam with Kothamangalam Seenu playing Sarangadhara but it was not a success. Then came the 1936 version with M.K.T. Bhagavathar directed by K Subramanyam. As there was already a Sarangadhara, the director called it Naveena Sarangadhara. The cast included M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and S. D. Subbulakshmi in the lead roles supported by S. S. Mani Bhagavathar, G. Pattu Iyer and Indubala, a Hindi singing artiste. Papanasam Sivan wrote the lyrics and composed the music. Songs were sung by M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and one song Sivaperuman kirupai vendum (Raga Surutti) became an immortal hit of Tamil film music. Gnanakumari nadana singari and Aparaatham seithariyen also became hits. Indubala sang two songs in Hindi in praise of Lord Krishna. There were also dances by Miss Komal and Party of Calcutta. The film had a successful run wherever it was screened. It was again made in 1937 in Telugu and again in 1957 in Tamil with Sivaji Ganesan and P.Bhanumathi, but it did not do well.but some of its songs became popular. However, 1937 would witness Bhagavathar emerging as the first superstar of South Indian Cinema with the two mega hits in a single year: Chintamani and Ambikapathi Both films created history mainly for the music and all credit went to Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. Nagar s commercial hub Sir, On Sept. 12 our Association had a meeting with the DC (L&O, Mambalam Police Station) and handed over a copy of the report filed by Dept. of Fire and Rescue Services in Madras High Court based on its physical inspection of the compliance of fire safety norms by commercial establishments in T. Nagar and Mambalam. The inspection was ordered by Madras High Court based on the PIL filed by our Association. In its report, the Fire Dept. has stated that most of the commercial establishments have not complied with the fire safety norms nor are they equipped to control major fires from spreading. It has also reported that the narrow lanes and encroachments on pavements and service lanes will deter the movement of fire tenders and ambulances in reaching the spot of the fire accident. The DC has assured the Association that appropriate action will be taken soon to remove encroachments. B. Kannan, Secretary, T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar No direct CMBT bus for Mambalam residents Sir, At present there is no direct bus connecting West Mambalam and CMBT. Baby Ammal (70) (resident of 18/4, Brindavan Street, West Mambalam) was found dead in a private community lodge at 53/25, Ganapathy MAMBALAM TIMES Elderly woman murdered in lodge, guests under suspicion Street, West Mambalam, at around 11 p.m on Sept. 23. According to police sources, Baby Ammal lived with her son Vajravelu, a carpenter, after her husband passed away. Police received a complaint from Vajravelu that her mother was missing since at 11 a.m on Sept. 21. The police have received information that a foul smell was emanating from a locked room on the first floor of the lodge and they arrived and unlocked the room to find the decomposed body of Baby Ammal who appeared to have been strangulated to death. Vajravelu told police that a 4.5 sovereign gold chain and earrings worth half a sovereign are missing from his mother s body. Preliminary investigations revealed that, the room was occupied from 10-21 September by a family from Ahimsapuram near Madurai. Saravanan (25) was staying in the room with his wife, child and his sister-in-law. It is said, he had been trying for a job in city, and that the occupants had been deferring in paying the daily rent of Rs 250 for the room, police said. On Sept. 21, the family went out at around 11 a.m, locking the door after informing the lodge manager that they would return after withdrawing cash from an ATM to pay the rent in whole. However, they did not return. Police said Baby Ammal supplied idlis to the tenants in the lodge, who are mostly bachelors. It is suspected that she would have been murdered for her valuables as Saravanan and his family were short of cash. A case has been registered and investigating by R3 Ashok Nagar Police Station.
