Upon This Rock I ll Build My Part 6: Discipling and being Discipled (part 2) KENTON KAUFFMAN AGATHOS CHURCH MAY 20TH, 2018 Full Text (for reading on your own) The Lord will Rebuke the Devourer for your Sake! As Andy was driving to and from work in his Toyota Corolla he began to notice over multiple days a sound coming from what seemed like the front passenger side suspension. He thought bummer - this didn t used to make this sound and it s not supposed to make this sound so something seems to be going wrong. They were due for an oil change so he mentioned the sound to them too. He even gave them a video recording of the sound so that they could hear it. When Andy and Laura prepare their tithe in the morning (even their young daughter joins in) one of the things they pray is Your Word says You will rebuke the devourer for our sakes and we thank You for that now - that You will rebuke the devourer over home repairs, car repairs, our health in the Name of Jesus! They also prayed the same thing after dropping the Corolla of to get looked at. At the same time Andy was thinking BUT there is something wrong with the car. Now interestingly, Andy tried to play the video so they could hear the sound when he dropped the car off but he could not actually get the sound to play on the video. He tried to get another video on Facebook to play sound his phone would not play sound! It s almost as if the Lord was saying I ve already rebuked the devourer don t even tell them about this - it s taken care of! Later that day, Andy s phone played sound no problem. Finally Andy got a call late on Saturday from the shop who said they just couldn t hear that sound even though they drove the car around everywhere! This is where Andy had a learning point as his honest, immediate reaction was guys, come on I ve heard the sound for 4 days; it s there! Andy realized that he should have immediately thought praise You Lord, You ve rebuked the devourer - it s done! They drove the car home - no sound (altough it mostly only happened at highway speeds). Then Laura drove the car to work on Monday - no sound. Andy drove the car to work Tuesday - no sound. Every day since then there is no sound and no issue with the car. They didn t pay anything for it. The Lord rebuked the devourer for their sakes! - 1 -

Your car isn t going to be breaking down and costing you money. Your house isn t going to breaking down. You are not going to have medical bills pilling up. That s what you can speak into and say You rebuke the devourer for our sake! All of His promises are yes and amen and they work together. He wants you healthy and healed and He also doesn t want you paying all these bills for that either! +1 / Neutrals / -1 Your -1 s are your disciples, your mentees, or your children. Your neutrals are your peers. As an aside, house church is where a lot of life happens. Iron sharpens iron. This is where Kenton gets to sit down with people like Bryan Mangerchine who has a lot of experience in managing people well and Kenton can bounce things off of him and receive from Bryan s experience - and vice versa - Kenton can share some of his life experiences, wisdom, favor, etc. with others too. Your +1 s are the more seasoned players - the disciplers. We ve talked about how you need to have both an outlet and an inlet. If you don t have an inlet (+1 s in your life) you dry up. Likewise if you don t have an outlet (-1 s) you become the dead sea. The dead sea cannot support life. The river needs to keep FLOWING through you. Why Discipleship? 1. Jesus modeled this when He drew 12 to Himself. He even called them His disciples. 2. It s a way to grow the Kingdom exponentially. Consider this: if you have one disciple you are not growing anything; you are just replacing yourself. If however, you have two disciples, all of a sudden things multiply because your two can each find another two! Within a generation you can have 8 people permanently impacted. Their destines are changed! 3. It s how the values and culture of the Kingdom get transferred to another generation. 4. It s how favor and inheritance get passed down from one generation to another. 5. It s giving someone the tools to manage that inheritance. An inheritance (either spiritual or material) should never be consumed. It should be re-sown. If you give someone an inheritance or blessing without the tools to manage it, it can be destructive. You cannot give 10 million dollars to a child without resources and tools to manage that wealth or it will likely destroy them. It can be the same with a spiritual inheritance as well. If you raise someone up who has all the attributes of leadership but they are lacking humility, that gifting will possess them and destroy them - if they don t have the humility to handle that. - 2 -

6. You are creating an outflow so that inheritance doesn t die like it did in the Dead Sea. You are teaching those you disciple you need to have an outflow too for the things that I am building into you to flow out. Discipleship is different for +1 s and -1 s. What is Discipleship? For +1 s, discipleship is breaking off a piece of your life and sharing it with someone. It is taking the life lessons, wisdom, values, favor, and covering and imparting it to someone else. It s fathering and mothering. If you are a parent you are also a discipler - you are a +1. You might try to be buddybuddy with your child, but you are inescapably a +1 to them. They NEED you. Our children NEED us not to be buddy-buddy, but we need to be +1 s. Discipleship is passing on the tools or the key necessary to unlocking their destiny. As a -1 discipleship looks like in humility coming into the sphere of influence and covering of someone who has more favor than you and receiving that impartation of life. For children it s just simply submitting to your parents and making the choice to stay under their covering. Tips for -1 s Embrace humility. Clothe yourself in it. 1 Peter 5:5 says Likewise you younger people [your -1 s], submit yourselves to your elders [your +1 s]. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. For a -1 it s serving the needs, purpose, vision, and values of your +1. Examples in Scripture of +1 / -1 Relationships In thinking about examples, Kenton thought of: Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, and Paul and Timothy. Let s look at those examples to find some clues in there to tease this out. Moses and Joshua. Moses was called to lead the nation of Israel from slavery into the promised land. When Moses gets on the other side of the Red Sea they didn t have any pursuers any more but all the people started bringing all their problems to Moses for him to judge all their drama and they had a lot of drama! These were former slaves and it was going to take 40 years to get those mindsets out of their system (and they still didn t get it all out)! Jethro (Moses father-in-law) tells Moses that he had to stop because he was going to wear himself out! Jethro told Moses to appoint others to handle the drama and only bring the hard cases to him. Good advice from a mentor (his father-in-law) Moses took it. - 3 -

In Exodus 24:13 Moses takes his assistant, Joshua and goes up the mountain to receive the Law, the 10 Commandments, and the instructions on the temple. Moses had Joshua up there with him! Joshua was someone he could trust, someone he could impart life to. Joshua was the only person to go up the mountain with Moses to meet with God face-to-face. Joshua was getting an inside view of what was going on - of how God spoke to Moses face-to-face. Elijah and Elisha. Elijah was a prophet, was walking along, sees Elisha plowing a field with a whole bunch of oxen, takes off his mantle and tosses it on Elisha. Elisha says goodbye to his parents and then becomes Elijah s servant (1 Kings 19:21). That word for servant is actually the same word that was used for Joshua as Moses assistant. It means minister. It is the same word used for the priests ministering to the Lord. When you are a -1, you can ask yourself about your +1, what value can I add to their life? Hopefully your +1 has a lot going for them, but perhaps there is something you can contribute to them. I would like to spend some time with you but I realize that you are busy. Maybe I could come over and help fold laundry while we talk? What about watching your kids or bringing supper? If you are a -1, seek out +1 s with something you might need help with - like a breakthrough that you are looking for. What kind of favor does this +1 walk in / possess that I am going for? Recently, Kenton met an electrical contractor who is a third generation electrical contractor. Kenton told him I would love to grab a cup of coffee with you! You can receive so much from someone like that and just for the price of a cup of coffee??? Wow! Before you listen to someone s advice, look at the fruit of their life. If you are a parent, find a father or mother who s children are faithful and love the Lord with all their hearts - those are a +1 for you! Some tips for +1 s. 1. Believe that you have something to give - because you do. You absolutely do. You might have just received the Lord last week and had a conversion experience - but there are a lot of people that haven t had that conversion experience. Let me show you how this works because God is REAL! 2. Pray for your -1 s. Cover them in prayer and favor. See your -1 s through a prophetic lens - speaking to them about their destiny and reminding them of who they are supposed to be after the Spirit. Paul and Timothy. Paul wrote two letters to Timothy that became scripture talk about discipleship! Paul took Timothy, saw something in him, put him over the church in Ephesus, and then writes a few letters to provide further instruction. - 4 -

2 Timothy 1:3-7 says I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Here you see generational believing! Paul is teaching Timothy how to handle the favor that was passed down. The favor from generation to generation. Timothy had received personal impartation from Paul. Paul was calling forth the prophetic gift Timothy was carrying and calling forth the generational inheritance he received in the Lord from his grandmother and mother. 3. Assume that it is the heart of the Father that our -1 s outgrow us. John 14:12 shows that Jesus modeled exactly this expectation. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. It doesn t always happen that the -1 s outgrew the +1 s. You can t control that, but it is still the heart of the Father. As parents, it is our desire that our children stand on our shoulders to reach higher heights and see further - that our ceiling becomes their floor. In order to do that we have to rid ourselves of insecurity. It is totally fine for our children to outgrow us! That s the way it s supposed to be. Imagine a general practitioner who had a son or daughter become a surgeon. That s the way it s supposed to be. We are supposed to leave them inheritance to build on. They are supposed to exceed us and surpass us. They are supposed to re-sow that inheritance so that it multiplies through the generation exponentially. You can impact and bring change through wealth. Testimony of Discipleship Invite people to your inner circle to be a +1 to you. When you are in proximity to someone with incredible amounts of favor in their life, amazing things start to happen with you. Kenton and Karissa were in invited to part of a small mentorship group called 12 for 12 (12 disciples for 12 months). He had so much inside of him to release / impart / teach that they met 12 times over the course of the year. It was a bunch of neutrals and a two +1 s. Kenton s life will never be the same because they came under that favor for the year. They got to see it modeled for them and celebrate each other s successes. It was incredible. During that season Kenton was also invited on a ministry trip to Turkey. It was Kenton s first exposure to prophetic ministry. The minister told Kenton to look around the meeting and see what God wants to say over a couple people and get a word for them. All of a sudden the prophetic was - 5 -

activated in Kenton! He had seen some of that modeled in the 12 for 12 group but all of a sudden Kenton was thrown in to the deep end, given an opportunity and it was activated in him! For the next 10 or 12 days Kenton was able to ask questions into the late hours of the night of this mentor. What was that??? Let me tell you! This man had ministered with John Wimber during the signs and wonders conferences and was telling Kenton about the incredible miracles that happened during those conferences. Kenton didn t sleep hardly at all during those days! That connection then opened to door to go minister with another minister in California - incredibly powerful! And then that experience in California then opened the door to come to Agathos. All of these things came through proximity to someone who saw something in us and invited us in - and our lives will never be the same. Our body is overflowing with talents, gifts, and influence in the arts, business, education, parenting, et cetera. Kenton thinks it is really time to prepare ourselves to extend our influence through discipleship. - 6 -
