SANNING DEAD-highly respected farmer of Cole County passed away-john H. Sanning, age eighty-six years and one of the best known farmer s in Cole County, died at his home on theosage River near Schubert's Friday.Mr. Sanning was a native of Germany but had resided in Cole County for the past fifty years. He was father of a large family of children, now useful business men and women of this county. One son is cashier of the FarmersBank of Eugene, a position he has filled with credit to himself and honor to the institution for the past several years.the children are; Frank, Ben, Antone and Peter of Mary'sHome; Joseph who lived with his father; Herman, of Taos, and Henry, Cashier of the Farmers Bank of Eugene. Onedaughter, Mrs. Mary Knoll, resided with her father. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 8:00 o'clock from the Catholic church at Taos after which the remains were laid to rest. Nov. 12, 1914 Eldon Advertiser taken from Jefferson City Capital News JOHN H. SANNING DIES AT RIPE AGE OF 86 Came to Missouri from Germany when young man-----amassed Considerable property here. The funeral of John H. Sanning, aged and well known farmer, who died yesterday at his home on the Osage river, near Schuberts, will be held Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock from the Catholic Church at Taos. Sanning was a native of Germany, but had resided in this county over 50 years. He amassed through industry and thrift a competency, his farm being counted one of the best in this section of the state. He was 86 years old. His wife died last January and the grief over her death hastened his. Several children survive him. They are Frank, Ben, Anton, Peter of Mary's Home; Joseph, who lived with his father; Herman of Taos, and Henry Sanning, cashier of the bank at Eugene, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Kroll, resided with her father. John H. Sanning by Peggy Smith Hake John H. Sanning was born in Germany about 1829. His parents were Francis Leopold Sanning (179 9-1873) and Anna Margaretha Jansen (1805-1875). They were parents of three children including JOHN H. SANNING 1829-1914 m. Adalaide Bruenning; ANNA MARIA SANNING 1833-1865 m. Bernard Rackers; and ANNA HELENA SANNING 1837-1920 m. William John Berendzen. I found no record of other children but it is likely others may have died in infancy. A descendant of this family traced the Sanning family history backward in time through two more generations, all natives of Germany. Leopold Sanning and Anna Adelheide Korte were the great grandparents of John; Johann Heinrich Sanning and Anna Maria Brunner were the grandparents of John; and Francis Leopold Sanning and Anna Margaretha Jansen were the parents of John. When Francis Leopold and Margaretha Sanning came to America they settled in Cole County with their three children. During the Civil War both father and son served with the Union army. Francis was a Captain in Co. F, First Regiment of the Missouri Home Guards and John also served with the Home Guards. If Francis actually was a soldier in that war, he would have been over 60 years old! Francis died in Cole County in 1873 at the age of 74 years and his wife, Margaretha, died in 1875 and was 70 years old. 10

John H. Sanning married Adalaide Bruenning (1841-1914) in Cole County and they were parents of several children. According to his obituary, taken from The Jefferson City Capitol News and reprinted in The Eldon Advertiser in 1914, John amassed a considerable amount of property in Cole County in the Schuberts area. His huge farm was considered one of the best in that section of the state. The children of John and Adalaide were FRANCIS/FRANK SANNING, JOHN HENRY SANNING JR., HERMA N SANNING, ANTON SANNING, PETER SANNING, JOSEPH SANNING, BERNARD J. SANNING, AND MARY (SANNING) KROLL...Four of their sons (Frank, Bernard/Ben, Anton, and Peter) moved to the Marys Home area in Miller County; John Henry Jr. was cashier of the bank at Eugene; Herman lived at Taos; Joseph and his widowed sister, Mary, were living with their father when he died i n 1914. John H. Sanning died at his home on the Osage river, near Schuberts, on November 11, 1914 a t the age of 86 years. His wife of many years, Adalaide (Bruenning) Sanning died in January 1 914. Both are buried at the Taos St. Francis Xavier church cemetery. NOTE: Johns sister, Anna Helena Sanning, married William John Berendzen in Cole County in 1854. They later moved to Marys Home and died there. They are buried at Our Lady of the Snows church cemetery. Today there are many people living in the Marys Home community who are descendants of the Sanning and Berendzen families. Mrs. Knoll, who was living with her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Propst, at 2711 South 59th, St. Louis, was visiting her brothers, Henry, Ben, William and Jake Sanning. She suffered a stroke while in the home of her brother Ben. When she collapsed she fell and broke her hip and her leg. She had never rallied after she was taken to the hospital. She had come out here with Mr. and Mrs. Propst, and they with other relatives, had attended the State Fair at Sedalia. She was apparently in the best of health when she was stricken. Mrs. Knoll was the daughter of John Sanning and was born near Taos Sept. 19, 1872, lacking only 27 12

days of being 74 years old. Prior to her marriage to Adolph Knoll, she kept house for a number of years for her brother, Henry Sanning, at Eugene. Mr. Knoll was accidentally killed some years ago while working in St. Louis. Other near relatives, besides the daughter, who survive her, are five brothers - Henry Sanning, and Eugene, William, Ben and Jake Sanning of Marys Home and Peter Sanning, who makes his home most of the time with his children in Texas.
