Dear Friends, The month of May brings many new opportunities. Some are happy events such as cleaning up the dead of the winter from our yards and watching the amazing rate of growth in the renewing of our landscapes. We begin dreaming of the fall harvest and plant our gardens. We fill our planters and yards with the beautiful flowers of spring and summer. Within our church family, we also welcome new opportunities. We gather together to praise and thank God for calling Kirsten to share her talents with us in worship for the past five years, She has truly blessed and touched our hearts. It is hard to say goodbye, but we also are so happy that she will be using her faith and calling full time in ministry at White Memorial Presbyterian in Raleigh, North Carolina. We say, Happy Mother s Day and celebrate the wondrous gifts of God within familial and community families. Over the years there have been many mothers to my own children. It is so wonderful to say, thank you; for the touch of mothers, We share the Day of Pentecost when the Truth of God s love in physically touched and created the Body of Christ we know as the church. With these opportunities, I wish to share a reading from the May 17 Guidepost about growth. In North America, the majority of churches don t have as many members as they did ten, twenty, or fifty years ago. Some experts say there s no hope for the church. My friend Bill is not one of them. Pastor of one of those small-and-getting-smaller churches in the Midwest, he never seems discouraged about that reality. So one day I asked him, How do you stay so positive when your membership keeps shrinking? Aren t you afraid you ll close? Bill smiled, I don t know what you re talking about. We re not shrinking. We re growing up ten percent from last year. Can t be, I said. I ve seen your membership numbers. Down every year for the last ten. You count numbers, Bill said, but we count touches. Anytime anyone in our church does something for someone else in the name of Jesus, that s a touch: a card sent, a phone call made, a meal delivered, a donation to the food pantry. And our goal is to increase touches. In the five years that we ve counted this way, we ve grown every year. Bill s wisdom has changed the way I live my life. My initial goal was one touch per day; too small. Now it s five. And here s what I ve discovered: when my touches grow in number, I grow in faith. Show me, God, where I can bring your hope and love to someone else today Jeff Japinga Let s make a month together created and celebrated touches. Blessings, Pastor Jan 3

The Lily Cross added a special touch to our Easter Service. A big Thank You to Lee Steenken for her time and talents. A special Thank You to our Music Director, Kirsten Homdrom, Naomi Guth, cellist, and Venice Choir for the beautiful music and voices. 4

Celebration! May 3rd! Be sure to join together for a special celebration and recognition of the dedication and service to our church by Kirsten Homdrom, our highly talented Music Director over the past 5 years! She has completed her Doctorate of Music degree and will be embarking on her career at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. All our best and warmest wishes and prayers will go with her. Let s get together to sing her praises on May 3rd. Greetings everyone, It s hard to believe I ve been at Venice for almost five years, and now our time together has come to a close. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving this congregation, and I have been blessed in so many ways through my experiences here. Thank you so much for all of your support over the years. Peace, Kirsten Homdrom Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! Psalm 146:1 5

Christian Education News The Adult Sunday School Class is led by Kim Young on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the church annex. The class just started a new series entitled The Case for Faith. We will explore many of the difficult questions that we ask ourselves in our daily walk with our Christian Faith. Sunday school is a great time to learn more about the Bible and to relate what is discussed to current events and to your own personal walk with Christ. Please plan to join the group on Sundays for a time of coffee, fellowship, and sharing of faith. Mission Team participant and parent meeting will be held Sunday, May 3rd, following Kirsten s reception. Please let Pastor Jan know if you are not available for the meeting but are coming on the trip. 8

Venice Preschool News May marks the last month for the 2014-2015 school year! For the past 9 months we have enjoyed getting to know the children and seeing them become comfortable with going to school and watching them grow and learn. We have some fun activities planned for this last month including "hand-print" painting t-shirts to wear to the graduation picnic at Harbin Park. This has been an annual tradition for many years and we look forward to handing out preschool diplomas to the children as they stand on "the rock" under the tree. We will finish up our learning concepts with the letters Y and Z and continue to review numbers 1-20, colors and shapes. The bible story for this month is Zacchaeus and the tree. We still have openings in our 3 day p.m. class for the 2015-2016 school year. Please contact us for more information: 513-738-0158, vpcpreschool@thevenicechurch.com, www.venicepreschool.com. 11

Junior Church Junior Church is continuing to focus on our Faith Weaver s Bible Study Series. The teachers will also be reading from a Bible Story Book each Sunday. We are trying to reinforce some of the traditional Bible stories and are encouraging the students to learn where those stories are in the Bible. We will also be sending home student study sheets beginning with the summer curriculum. We hope that you will ask your children what they learned that morning. Encourage them to share the Bible lessons and review the study sheet that they will be bringing home with them. Learning the Bible stories, becoming familiar with the Bible and sharing the information with others is a way for students to help put on the armor of faith to prepare them for the challenges that they will face as they grow into young adults. Junior church takes place on Sunday mornings during the worship service. Bring your children and grandchildren to church and plant the seed of faith. 12
