June 17 2018 - Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER Our second reading for this Sunday from the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians offers us a great oneliner: For we walk by faith, not by sight, (5:7). What Paul means to say is that we are like people in exile, away from our true homeland. The Lord is that homeland, to be believed in but not seen. I think this one-liner is a good summary of our Christian understanding of faith Here I have to mention the famous [Protestant] hymn Amazing Grace: I once was lost but now am found; was blind but now I see. Perhaps one presumes too much when one claims to see. Even for people of faith, much darkness remains. That is because faith is not clear knowledge. St. Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians: At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face, (13:12). Even Paul himself did not claim that he was able to see clearly. It was very fitting that medieval thinkers situated faith between science (or knowledge) and opinion. Faith is superior to opinion, but inferior to science because in science, the object is known to the subject. The ultimate object/objective of all our believing is God, and God cannot be known to us completely in a manifest manner (as in science), but only in a veiled manner. Therefore, like Paul, we can only see dimly, as in a mirror. St. Thomas Aquinas, the greatest medieval theologian, taught that people of faith do not have full, but only partial, understanding of the truths about God. They are like the patient who, in a sense, knows what ails him and he accepts his doctor s diagnosis as true, but he lacks the doctor s proper understanding of medicine; and thus, his knowledge is only partial. According to Thomas, our understanding/knowledge of God is never complete, at least in this life, since we are still pilgrims on the way (in via) and not yet at the Father s home (et non in patria). Things will only become clear when we finally arrive at our true homeland (patria) when, to use the traditional Christian language, we shall be able to see God face to face In the last analysis, faith is kind of a dark journey into the unknown. Biblical figures such as Abraham and the Blessed Mother went on this journey of faith without any clear sight. And yet they trusted in the Lord s promise. And because of that trust, they were able get through the darkness All in all, as long as we are pilgrims on this journey, we are still walking by faith and not by sight. Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death.
--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
