THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SHARING OUR GIFTS Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when He returns? TODAY S READINGS First Reading The woman who fears the LORD is to be praised (Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31). Psalm Blessed are those who fear the Lord (Psalm 128). Second Reading Brothers and sisters, you are children of the light (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6). Gospel To all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance (Matthew 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. A HAPPY AND BLESSED THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES! Monsignor Francis McAree Father Abraham Vallayil Deacon John Kelleher Deacon John Jurasek THANKSGIVING TURKEY & FOOD DRIVE THIS SATURDAY & SUNDAY As Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who may be in greater need than we are at this time of the year. Please consider donating a turkey and other food items to our annual Thanksgiving Turkey & Food Drive. Supermarket Gift Cards are also welcome! Whatever we collect will be given to families right here in our own Parish, as well as, the Catholic Community Services Food Pantry. If you know someone in need of assistance, please speak with Monsignor McAree. Remember, it is the love and sacrifices made during a lifetime that determine the true meaning in our lives. How blessed we are to be able to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. May God bless you for your generosity. THE LEGEND OF THE FIVE KERNELS It was very cold for the Pilgrims that first winter. Food was in short supply. Some days, they had only five kernels of corn to eat. When spring came, the Pilgrims planted the remaining corn. The sun and rain helped the seeds to grow and much food was harvested in the Fall. Every Thanksgiving thereafter, the Pilgrims placed five kernels of corn beside each plate to remind them of their blessings. The first kernel reminded them of the autumn beauty. The second kernel reminded them of their love for God and each other. The third kernel reminded them of their family s love. The fourth kernel reminded them of their friends especially their Indian brothers. The fifth kernel reminded them that God hears our prayers and answers us. That first year, the Pilgrims made many more graves than homes. No Americans have been more impoverished than they who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving, let us all remember the blessings in our lives. Count the kernels, count your blessings. For flowers that bloom about our feet; For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee; For all things fair we hear or see; Father in Heaven, we thank Thee. Ralph Waldo Emerson

TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC CHARITIES CAMPAIGN FOR CHARITY AND JUSTICE The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need. Pope Francis 2017 marks Catholic Charities 100 th Years of Service to the People of the Archdiocese of New York. Catholic Charities seeks to uphold the dignity of each person as made in the image of God by serving the basic needs of the poor, troubled, frail, and oppressed of all religions. At Cardinal Dolan s request, Catholic Charities of New York is launching a project to further develop the charitable and justice ministries of Archdiocesan parishes and transform the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in the Archdiocese into the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice. A special collection will take place this weekend in all the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York. The funds raised through this collection will support parish and community-based projects through grants that meet local needs, particularly those of our poor and vulnerable neighbors. OUR PARISH THANKSGIVING SERVICE THIS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20 th, 7:30 PM Please join us for our Annual Parish Thanksgiving Service, this Monday, November 20 th at 7:30 PM. The service, about 45 minutes long, features our Children s Choir who will lead us in a few beautiful songs, some special prayers and scripture readings, prayers of petition, and our offertory procession of food for those in need. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. OUR PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY THURSDAY, 11/23 AND FRIDAY, 11/24 For emergencies requiring the presence of a Priest, please call the Parish Office at (845) 359-0542. NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Next week s Second Collection will help offset our Archdiocesan assessment for the Catholic School System in New York. Thank you for your continued support. PREP S PRAYER PARTNERS This weekend, on our Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church, you will find cards with the names of PREP students who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation here at St. Catharine s Church on June 2, 2018. Please take a card and join us as Prayer Partners, praying for the specific students on the back of the card as they continue on their journey of faith. ST. CATHARINE OF ALEXANDRIA FEAST DAY, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25 th St. Catharine, Virgin and Martyr, is believed to have been born in Alexandria, Egypt in the early 4 th Century. According to tradition, she is said to have been both a princess and a noted scholar who converted to Christianity after a vision at the age of 14. She denounced the pagan Emperor Maxentius for persecuting Christians. Maxentius offered Catharine a royal marriage if she would deny her faith. Her refusal landed her in prison. While in prison, and while Maxentius was away, Catharine converted Maxentius wife and two hundred of his soldiers. When he returned he had them all put to death. Catharine was likewise condemned to death. At the age of 18, she was put on a spiked wheel, and when the wheel broke, she was beheaded. 1,100 years following her martyrdom, St. Joan of Arc identified Catharine as one of the Saints who appeared to her and counselled her. Maxentius blind fury against St. Catharine is symbolic of the anger of the world in the face of truth and justice. When we live a life of truth and justice, we can expect the forces of evil to oppose us. Our perseverance in good, however, will be everlasting. Please try to attend Mass on Saturday, November 25 th at 8:30 AM in honor of St. Catharine of Alexandria, our Patron Saint. Saint Catharine, pray for us. MAGNIFICAT ADVENT COMPANION Please be sure to pick up a copy of the Magnificat Advent Companion from one of the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church. This rich spiritual companion, our gift to you, will accompany you through the four weeks of Advent with beautiful scriptural reflections for each day of the season. You will find a wealth of meditative prayers, essays, poetry, and more. By spending a few moments meditating on the inspiring daily reflections and the short prayers that follow them, you will discover all that is true, good, and beautiful about the Catholic faith. PAMPHLET RACK Advent and Christmas booklets, pamphlets, prayer cards and other items are now available for sale on the Pamphlet Rack and side tables. There is also a limited selection of free items.
