Heather Cushing, Pastoral Minister I wrote this as we were in the middle of our Parish Mission. Each night of the Mission started with song and each song lead us deeper in prayerful expectation of what was to come. The music took us into the opening of the scriptures about Peter. We could clearly see the images as Bob skillfully and creatively described each scene. Bob Rice s journey with us started with Jesus' question to Peter and to us: Do you love me? Then taking us into the deep, Bob led us through Peter s call - a call to transformation - to be a follower of Jesus as a fisher of persons. Bob then took us out on the Sea of Galilee where Simon (Peter) and the crew of his boat got caught up in a vicious storm. While they were all terrified, Jesus slept in the bottom of the boat! Fear gripped Simon s heart, said Bob Rice. Just when they thought all was lost, Jesus opened his eyes and calmed the sea. The final night, Bob took us to Peter s important answer Lord, you know I love you and the journey to that answer. Each evening ended with a period of Adoration, a very powerful time before the Blessed Sacrament, combining a time of song and silence as we came before the Lord who saved us. It was a time for us to see how God is calling each one of us to personal transformation. How will we answer? Pastor: Fr. Bob Remark Parochial Vicar: Fr. Seejo John Permanent Deacons: Deacon John Vallely, Deacon George Sebok, Deacon Henry Kling Pastoral Minister: Heather Cushing ext. 260 Coordinator of Youth Ministry: Patty Coenen ext. 258 Business Administrator: Tom Boone ext. 224 Secretaries: Kelly Wilson ext. 201, Sheila O Brien ext. 222 Bookkeeper: Anne Sanderson ext. 229 Building & Property Coordinator: Steve Baldinelli ext. 261 Come as you are, and you will be loved. Responding to the call of Jesus, we will transform the world. The First Sunday of Lent ~ March 5, 2017 Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. We began our time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. God is now calling us to look at our relationship with him and to look at how we can grow closer to him. We do not have to go big; we can start with small steps maybe praying for five minutes every day, gradually increasing our time as we go. For the folks who gather each week for Alpha, this was a big week too! We met this Saturday to look deeper at how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and to look at prayer. This was a very special time for us as we saw God s power at work in us through prayer. We have come to understand that prayer is our direct communication with God. It is through communicating with God that we discover what his plans are for our lives. Like Peter we, too, sometimes are not sure where God is leading us. To grow in trust, we need continual encounters with Christ, who is God. Jesus asks us to follow him. He is the way, the truth and the life. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. The First Sunday of Lent ~ March 5, 2017 Readings for March 12, 2017 The Second Sunday of Lent First Reading: Genesis 12.1-4 Psalm: Psalm 33.4-5, 18-19, 20+22 (R.22) Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1.8b-10 Gospel: Matthew 17.1-9 A message from Fr. Bob, This is the quote that I shared in my homily last weekend... Trust & Let Go Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Matthew 6:27 Jesus was obviously not thinking about exercise, a careful diet and regular checkups with your primary care physician as a means to improve one s life longevity. Careful planning and thoughtful action are not to be confused with worry. The kind of obsessive thinking that troubles many of us maybe all of us at some time or other worrying isn t a rational calculation. We don t do it because we think it does some good. It feels like a reflex and has been described as a down payment on problems that may never happen. Or even if some catastrophe will happen like one s own death - worrying controls nothing. But it sure can make you miserable. This, I think is why Jesus brings it up. Needless, pointless, useless worry does us no good. Meanwhile, it diminishes our enjoyment of simple things like sparrows and flowers and green grass. Jesus is inviting us to trust and let go. Let us give it a try today. Mark Nielsen Taken from Living Faith Daily Catholic Devotions - Feb. 26, 2017 Thank you to Bob Rice for his excellent Lenten Mission this past week. For this year s Share Lent campaign, we invite you to listen to the voices of women who are working to build the world of tomorrow Women at the heart of change. You will find testimonials from the four corners of the globe inside our Mini-magazine, distributed in church starting today. Don t forget to get your copy! Our 1st testimonial is from Marta and Silvia, two women from Paraguay who are members of an Indigenous women s farming association supported by Development and Peace Caritas Canada. I wish that there was land for everyone, that women were free [and] that they had the freedom to organize and defend their rights, Silvia tells us. Women have always been at the heart of our organization! Did you know that in 1979, Development and Peace led a campaign to support the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, in Argentina, whose children and grandchildren disappeared under the military dictatorship? St. Vincent de Paul Youth Conference - The members of the S.S.V.P Youth Conference and those who received the huge load of Socks, Thank you for your generousity! We collected over 450 pairs of socks for Valentine's Day distribution. The winter socks were donated to the St. Joseph's Hospitality Centre, Men's Mission, Boys and Girls Club of London and the SSVP Cover me with LOVE program. Many have benefited from your beautiful gift of warmth and love. Together we are making a change with these small acts of kindness. God bless you! We encourage parishioners to consider switching to monthly pre-authorized donations for the Sunday collection by filling out the blue pre-authorized donation registration forms available in the pamphlet rack in the narthex.
