December 2011 jiut exxwxü P r e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e Hi all... I'd like to thank everyone that had any part of making this year s convention a success. Our numbers were not as big as past years but everyone that I talked to had a great time. There was a wonderful raffle...and a silent auction...big and little baskets were made too. What more could anyone want? There was a change to the bylaws. Every guild does not have to have 50% of their members belonging to WVBA to be a guild of WVBA. We are hoping this will help North Central and Mountain Heritage Guilds and they will feel free to come back and join us again. Also Membership was reduced to $15.00 per year starting January1, 2012. We are sad to see Paula Huber and Sharon Sutton leave the Board. They have donated many hours to WVBA. I know we will still call on them to help us out from time to time. Thank you Paula and Sharon for all of your hard work. Gayle Roush is our new Membership chair, Peggy Squires is our new Treasurer, and Nancy Sealey will be joining us again this year as Secretary. Welcome ladies. I am looking forward to working with you this year. I hope by now that your tree is trimmed and your packages are all wrapped. Enjoy your family and friends as we end this year and welcome a new one. Bless you all. Merry Christmas... Gail A Note to All WVBA Members I would like to sincerely apologize to all Members for the lateness of this issue of the WVBA Reeder. I will strive to do better on future issues. Wilma Harrison, Newsletter Editor

Page 2 WVBA Reeder The 2011 General Meeting for the West Virginia Basketmakers Association was held on November 12, 2011 at Tamarack in Beckley, WV following a slide show presentation by Kathy Halter of Royalwood. Gail Hutchinson, Convention Coordinator welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending and supporting this year s convention. She presented the teachers of this year s convention with a monetary gift from the participating guilds and also memory books that she had compiled over the weekend. The silent auction made enough to give all of our teachers an additional $50 and to award one scholarship for next year s convention. This scholarship was won by Sharon Sutton. Minutes from last year s general meeting were read by Nancy Sealey, Secretary, and were approved as read. Paula Huber was unable to attend but did send a Treasurers report. Her report was presented and accepted by the membership in attendance. Sharon Sutton, Membership, reported that we have 89 members. Dues are due December 31 st. Karen Buskirk, Vice President, reported that the Policy and Procedure Manual will be tabled at this time. The four guilds in attendance (Homespun, Western Weavers, Mid Ohio Valley, and Moundweavers) each reported that there guilds are still active and meeting regularly. Karen Buskirk made a motion that the bylaws be changed to reflect the removal of the 50% membership necessary from each guild to be affiliated with WVBA. Selena Straughn seconded the motion. After discussion, this motion carried by membership in attendance. Sharon Flanagan made a motion that annual dues for individual be reduced to $15.00 per year and Business/ Vendor membership be reduced to $20.00 per year. Motion seconded by Susan Church. Motion carried. Wilma Harrison, Nominating Chair, was unable to attend but sent the slate of new officers. Treasurer Peggy Squires; Secretary-Nancy Sealey; Membership-Gail Roush. Officers were presented to membership and Sharon Flanagan made motion to accept slate of officers. Seconded by Sharon Sutton. Motion carried. Dee Johnson and Peggy Squires noted that facebook is great place to keep in contact with other basketweavers. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact them. If anyone is interested in being Convention Coordinator for next year s convention, please contact Gail Hutchinson. Meeting adjourned at 7:20 PM. December 2011 Page 3 H o m e s p u n B a s k e t w e a v e r s G u i l d Greetings from Homespun Basketweavers. Well, our three days at Tamarack in November of this year was wonderful, the weather was nice not too cool not too hot, but pleasing to be out and about. There were several beautiful basket made and for the ones that did not make it out - you missed out on a wonderful time with friends and great conversations. We had our Christmas party early in December with lots of good food and great friends. Everyone had a wonderful time visiting and telling stories of the past and about friends that are no longer with us. We donated food items to our local food bank, this needs to be something we do more often for others in need. We still meet at the Harrison building on the third Monday of the month at 6pm. Hope to see new faces at our next meeting. Keep weaving. Diana Easter, Member at Large Hello Weavers, M i d O h i o V a l l e y G u i l d October found us looking forward to the holidays. Paula Huber was our instructor and we made a primitive angel. Convention was great. Good friends, good instructors, great classes, and good food. A special thank you from the Mid-Ohio Valley goes to Ken Ambrose for providing the facility at Tamarack. Peggy Squires has added a site for us on Facebook WV Basketmakers Association. Take a look. If your guild would like an administrator so that you can post pictures, send Peggy a note, or write on the wall. Peggy s email is peggysquires@gmail.com. Page 4 WVBA Reeder M o u n d w e a v e r s G u i l d Mound Weavers Guild, CEOS The members have been busy; they held the No commitment $5.00 basket class and had about 15 in attendances of those 3 have joined our guild. Tricia Wilson and I attended the State Conference in Beckley. We had a great time. The teachers were incredible; we not only made some beautiful baskets but were able to learn so many tips and techniques. It was an interesting presentation by Royal Wood and we enjoyed purchasing new supplies, tools and kits from the vendor and teachers. Our thanks go out to all those that helped put together the Convention it was our first but definitely not our last. You all deserve a round of applause. The members wove a Hope Basket, created by myself, and donated it full of Breast Cancer awareness items to the American Legion Auxiliary. The Auxiliary sold tickets and was able to raise $155.00. The proceeds were donated to Reynolds Memorial Hospital Discount Mammogram Program. The gentleman that won the basket, Bill Burket donated the basket to the Night at the Races to raise money for the John Marshall Baseball team. So the members were pleased to see the basket is helping local organizations. In November members got together and wove a Christmas Williamsburg Door Baskets. For Decembers the members are going to have snacks and weave a Wine basket with a braided handle, wine tasting will also be happening during the weave, in preparation for the Christmas Season. Meetings are held at the Marshall County Extension office on 2 nd Wednesday of the month at 5:30 will a class following the meeting. Remember check out our website at moundweavers.webs.com and email us at moundweaversguild@gmail.com to share upcoming weaving events. We would appreciate it. From the Mound Weavers Have a Merry Weaving Holiday Season. Member at large, Selena Straughn W e s t e r n W e a v e r s G u i l d Western Weavers will have their Christmas Party on December 13, 2011. The UFO's continues as members clean out their garages and work areas of those unfinished baskets. There were six members who attended the state convention at Tamarack. Members contributed a kit which they taught for the raffle. The weaver sent a note of appreciation which follows: Dear Western Weavers, I am writing to tell all of you how thrilled I am to win the lovely basket filled with kits. I learned that these were class weave projects for your group during the year. This makes the kits that much more meaningful. I feel like I won the grand prize at the raffle. Thank you for sharing your talents and for your generosity. You are truly handing down the tradition of weaving together and making something beautiful. The conference was just wonderful and I look forward to attending next year for the third time. I didn't feel like I was among strangers at all! You have the hospitality element nailed down. Everyone there felt a part of everything that went on. Fondly, Margaret Davis, Elkins, WV, and Williamsburg, VA. Ken Ambrose, Member at Large
