May our ever-giving and gracious God fill your heart with joy, peace, and hope through the message of forgiveness in our living Savior, Jesus Christ! PREPARING FOR WORSHIP After reliving the great events of the life of Christ, the worshiping Church spends half a year focusing on the teachings of Christ. The Church wears green during the season of Pentecost as the Spirit uses those teachings of Jesus to grow the faith of believers. Today we are reminded that we are not only to take every word of God to heart, we are also to put them into practice. God's commands are wise and good and following them is the only way to true freedom. May God's Holy Spirit abundantly produce fruits of faith in our lives! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O most holy Lord, keep me from words and actions that would defile you and your church. May I give you utmost honor and respect. May I always enter into your house with praise and thanksgiving. And may my days be dedicated to living a holy life out of thanks for my Savior Jesus work of forgiveness. I pray this in his name. Amen. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Flowers adorning our altar this morning are given to the glory of God by Stephen and Crystal Molina in thanksgiving for God s gift of work and labor. Minister: Pastor Daniel Schroeder Pianist: Bob Fromuth 1

CALL TO WORSHIP OPENING HYMN Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray Christian Worship #472 Minister: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. Congregation: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. LORD, HAVE MERCY (KYRIE) M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care: C: Amen. 2

M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise. O LORD, OUR LORD PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with your never-failing mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 3

CHILDREN S MESSAGE Children are invited to come forward for a children s devotion in the front of church. THE WORD OF GOD FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 4:1,2,6-9 Do not add, do not subtract, rather take God s Words to heart So now, Israel, listen to the statutes and the ordinances that I am teaching you, and carry them out so that you may live and so that you may enter the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving to you and take possession of it. 2 Do not add to the word that I am commanding you, and do not subtract from it, so that you keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you. 6 Keep them and put them into practice, because in this way your wisdom and your understanding will be recognized by all the people who hear about all these statutes; and they will say, This great nation is certainly a wise and understanding people, 7 because what other great nation is there that has a god as close to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on him? 8 What other great nation is there that has statutes and ordinances as righteous as this entire law that I am presenting to you today? 9 But guard yourselves and guard your whole being diligently, so that you do not forget the things that your eyes have seen and so that those things do not disappear from your heart all the rest of the days of your life. Make them known to your children and to your children s children. (EHV) 4

PSALM OF THE DAY God's law is to be taken inwardly tasted and digested. Psalm 119c We will read the verses and sing the refrain in unison. Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. I have more insight that all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. Refrain I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your Word. I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 5

SECOND LESSON James 1:17-27 Do not merely listen to the word; do what it says Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the lights, who does not change or shift like a shadow. 18 Just as he planned, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creations. 19 Remember this, my dear brothers: Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. 20 Certainly, a man s anger does not bring about what is right before God. 21 So after getting rid of all moral filthiness and overflowing wickedness, receive with humility the word planted in you. It is able to save your souls. 22 Be people who do what the word says, not people who only hear it. Such people are deceiving themselves. 23 In fact, if anyone hears the word and does not do what it says, he is like a man who carefully looks at his own natural face in a mirror. 24 Indeed, he carefully looks at himself; then, he goes away and immediately forgets what he looked like. 25 But the one who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues to do so since he does not hear and forget but actually does what it says that person will be blessed in what he does. 26 If anyone considers himself to be religious but deceives his own heart because he does not bridle his tongue, this person s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled in the sight of God the Father is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (EHV) GENERAL VERSE OF THE DAY John 20:31 6

GOSPEL LESSON Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 Jesus explains inward cleanliness as opposed to outward cleanliness The Pharisees and some of the experts in the law came from Jerusalem and gathered around Jesus. 2 They saw some of his disciples eating bread with unclean (that is, unwashed) hands. 3 In fact, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they scrub their hands with a fist, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions they adhere to, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches. 5 The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked Jesus, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead they eat bread with unclean hands. 6 He answered them, Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 They worship me in vain, teaching human rules as if they were doctrines. 8 You abandon God s commandment but hold to human tradition like the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things. 14 He called the crowd to him again and said, Everyone, listen to me and understand. 15 There is nothing outside of a man that can make him unclean by going into him. But the things that come out of a man are what make a man unclean. 21 In fact, from within, out of people s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual sins, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, unrestrained immorality, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and make a person unclean. (EHV) After the Gospel, the congregation sings: HYMN OF THE DAY O God, My Faithful God Christian Worship #459 SERMON James 1:17-22 Permanent is Dependent 7

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING The members of St. Peter Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Guests at St. Peter are welcome to participate in the offering but need not feel obligated to do so. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. We praise you, O God, for calling us to be your own, in spite of our sinfulness. We thank you for your forgiveness that you so richly give us in your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. M: Equip us with all things necessary to fight vigilantly against the evil of our sinful human condition and the evil foes that strive against us. Cover us with your merciful protection, and give us courage to use your Word to resist all that would seek to diminish and destroy our faith. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. M: Create clean hearts within us, O Lord, that we may not be misled by false teachings but hold fast to the pure Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. M: Grant wisdom to all who govern us, that they may lead us into peace and justice. Give your blessing to students and teachers, that true wisdom may abound to the glory of your holy name. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. Special prayers of intercession may follow M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer M: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 9

THE SACRAMENT St. Peter Lutheran Church practices close communion. We invite confirmed members to come forward to partake of the Sacrament. Thank you for your consideration. This dialog (also known as the preface ) leads into the heart of the Sacrament portion of the service. In its exalted sentences, we have the oldest and least changed part of the liturgy. There is evidence of its use in the 100 s A.D. M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory forever and ever. 10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (SANCTUS) WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen 11

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (AGNUS DEI) DISTRIBUTION OF THE LORD S SUPPER During the distribution you are invited to join in singing the indicated hymns or to use the time for private prayer and meditation.
