FEATURED ARTICLE Minding Your Manners in the Prayer Area Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, Nothing is weightier on the Scale of Deeds than one s good manners. and The best among you in Islam are those with the best manners, so long as they develop a sense of understanding. (Al-Bukhari) Please try to practice the following 10 manners and etiquettes 5 1. When you see a fellow Muslim Brother or Sister in the Prayer Area making salah in between salah times, be considerate and avoid sitting close to them and engaging in a conversation with another friend. Be mindful to not disturb others in loud conversations. If you need to talk, step outside or keep distance from the praying person and speak quietly. 2. Be mindful to not walk in front of those who are making salah when there is plenty of room to walk around them. On numerous occassions when the congregation salah has ended and people are performing their sunnah or nafl prayers, there is room for people to walk behind the person or simply wait a few minutes - yet many Brothers and Sisters neglect this and simply walk in front of the praying person. Please avoid this. 3. The Prayer Area is not a play ground - yet many Parents and Guardians are allowing their children to run around and play, making noises with video games and songs on their cell phone while adults are reciting the Quran or doing their salah. This distrubs those who are praying and reciting the Quran. Please stop this behavior. 4. Young Teenage Boys and Girls are engaging in loud conversations, sometimes about subjects highly inappropriate at the masjid, let alone in the prayer area - Parents need to educate them on the manners of the masjid. If you are a Teenger reading this - please be mindful of the subject of your conversations and keept it halal. 5. It is wonderful to see young Children, Teenagers and Adults in the prayer area reciting Quran to their Quran teachers - however - there is an extreme lack of respect and etiquette in how the Quran is being handled and how people around are behaving towards it. The Quran is a holy book to be respected - yet the book is being held by little children casually playing with it like a playbook on the ground, pages being pulled, Adults placing the Quran on the floor and on their lap casually or by their feet. There are plenty of Quran Rihals to use - so please use them out of respect for Allah s book. 6. When we make salah, we need to stand together shoulder to shoulder for women, feet to feet for men without any gap in between for the Shaitan - yet no matter how many times we pray - there are always gaps and people who sit far away until the Imam says Allahu Akbar and then an attempt is made to form a line. When you know a congregation prayer is about to start - sit in the position where you will form the line to begin with. It is inefficient and chaotic to move around to fill in the gaps when the Imam is about to start the prayer. 7. If a fellow Muslim Sister of Brother is giving you advice/nasiha about your children or requesting you to be quiet - avoid getting defensive or engaging in an argument - either apologize or quietly rectify the behavior. Think the best of the other person and show humility in accepting the advice. The person giving advice should also do so nicely. 8. Put your shoes in the shoe rack. Make this a habit! 9. Turn your cell phones OFF in the prayer area. Or mute or vibrate. If you neglect to do this and a song or adhan went off - pay a forgiveness fee by donating afterwards to the masjid for disturbing others. 10. When you are at the masjid, there will already be an Imam conducting the Adhan - so please turn off your cell phone adhan app. It has a different timing than the local masjid salah time and it s disturbing to have multiple personal adhans going off. If it goes off, quickly turn it off.

Clean Drinking Water A Companion of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), Sa d ibn Ubadah, asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), Umm Sa d has died; what form of Charity (Sadaqah) is best? He (PBUH) replied: Water (is best). He dug a well and said: It is for Umm Sa d. (Abu-Dawood #1677) Living in the developed world, we have so many blessings we don t always realize - one of those being easy access to clean water. Meanwhile, over a billion people world-wide have inadequate access to clean water, most of whom have no choice but to travel miles to stagnant and dirty water sources that hold disease causing bacteria, just for survival. Because of this, water-borne diseases are rampant in economically depressed areas throughout the world.
