Excellence of Adhân

Excellence of Adhân (1) Mu'awiya said: I heard the (صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( Allah Messenger of saying: The Mu'adhdhins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection. [Muslim] Scholars said: when people get thirsty on the Day of Resurrection their necks collapse from thirst. The Mu adhins do not get thirsty on that day, and therefore their necks stay up.

Excellence of Adhân (2) Narrated Jabir ( رضي اهلل عنه ) that he had heard the Prophet of Allah say: When Satan (صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( hears the call to prayer, he runs away to a distance like that of Rauha. Sulaiman said: I asked him about Rauha. He replied: It is at a distance of thirty-six miles from Medina.

Excellence of Adhân (3) Abu Huraira reported the (صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( Allah Messenger of as saying: When Satan hears the call to prayer, he turns back and breaks the wind so as not to hear the call being made, but when the call is finished he turns round and distracts (the minds of those who pray), and when he hears the Iqama he again runs away so as not to hear its voice and when it subsides, he comes back and distracts (the minds of those who stand for prayer).

Excellence of Adhân (4) Abu Huraira reported: The (صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( Allah Messenger of said: If the people were to know what excellence is there in the adhân and in the first row, and they could not (get these opportunities) except by drawing lots, they would have definitely done that. And if they were to know what excellence lies in setting out early (to join the prayer), they would have vied with one another. And if they were to know what excellence lies in the night prayer and morning prayer, they would have definitely come even if crawling.

Excellence of Adhân (5) Narrated `Abdur-Rahman: Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri told my father, "I see you liking sheep and the wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep or in the wilderness and you want to pronounce adhân for the prayer raise your voice in doing so, for whoever hears the adhân, whether a human being, a jinn or any other creature, will be a witness for you on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Sa`id added, I heard it from Allah's Messenger [Bukhari].(صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( ع ن ع ب د الر ح ن ب ن أ يب ص ع ص ع ة األ ن ص ار ي ع ن أ ب يه أ ن ه أ خ ب ر ه أ ن أ ب ا س ع يد ا ل د ر ي ق ا ل ل ه : إ ن أ ر ا ك حت ب ال غ ن م و ال ب اد ي ة ف إ ذ ا ك ن ت يف غ ن م ك أ و ب اد ي ت ك ف أ ذ ن ت ب الص ال ة ف ار ف ع ص و ت ك ب الن د اء ف إ ن ه ل ي س م ع م د ى ص و ت ال م ؤ ذ ن ج ن و ل إ نس و ل ش ىء إ ل ش ه د ل ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة.

Excellence of Adhân (7) Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: Allah is (صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ( pleased with a shepherd of sheep who calls to prayer at the peak of a mountain, and offers prayer, Allah, the Exalted, says: Look at this servant of Mine; he calls to prayer and offers it; he fears Me. So I forgive him and admit him to paradise. Sunan Abi Da'ud. Al-Albani classified it as Sahih.

Excellence of Adhân (8) Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah () said: The imam is responsible and the mu'adhdhin is trusted, O Allah, guide the imams and forgive the mu'adhdhins. [Abu Dawud] Adhân is better than Imamah (leading the prayer) for the virtues already mentioned and for صلى اهلل عليه ( Prophet the du a of the for forgiveness for the (وسلم صلى اهلل عليه ( he mu adhdhins while supplicated for guidance for (وسلم the Imams. Du a for forgiveness is higher than du a for guidance.

Excellence of Adhân (9) Al-Bukhari ( ر حه اهلل ) said: it was mentioned that a group of people differed about (who to call) adhân. So Sa d drew lots among them. Ibn Umar ( رضي اهلل عنه ) said: We used to say that the gates of heaven open at the time of every adhân. Ibn Mas ud ( رضي اهلل عنه ) said: If I were a Mu adhdhin I would not mind not performing Hajj or setting out for Jihad.

Common Mistakes When Calling Adhân

Main Causes of the Mistakes Trying to beautify the voice at the expense of the correct pronunciation and the rules of recitation. The introduction of madd (prolongation) in parts of the adhân where it does not belong. Incorrect pronunciation of some Arabic letters. Grammatical errors. Omission of some letters either in the middle or at the end of some words.

Singing the Adhân It is reported that a man came to Ibn Umar ( رضي اهلل عنه ) and said: I love you for the sake of Allah. Ibn Umar replied: Then bear witness that I hate you for the sake of Allah! The man asked: Why is that? He replied: Because you sing in your adhân, and you take a wage for calling it!

Other Adhân Rulings

Other Adhân Rulings Adhân is Fardh Kifaya for a group of Muslims. Adhân is a Sunnah for the individual who prays in his home or business. Adhân is a Sunnah for the traveler as well. It is recommended to call adhân for a prayer even after its time has passed (for a valid reason, like sleeping). There is no adhân for the following prayers: Eid, Janazah, Taraweeh, Istisqa (supplication for rain), Solar or Lunar Eclipse. The second adhân for the Jumua Prayer is not from the Sunnah and should not be called. Uthman هللا عنه) (رضي introduced this second adhân for a reason that is no longer there (calling people to gather for the Jumua when the number of people increased). It is preferable that the one who calls adhân calls Iqama as well, but it is not required. No one should leave the masjid after adhân is called and before the salat is performed except for a valid reason.
